The objective is to guide how to install Windows XP step by step procedure
with screenshots and quotations.

2.2. PURPOSE OF DOCUMENT


The purpose of documentation is to address the steps required to install
windows XP on your system.

Lets start with process. Down below are the steps mentioned with
screenshots:
Detailed steps on Windows XP installation:
1. Install Virtual Box and open Virtual box which should look like this

2. Click new, blue icon at the top left side of the application.

3. After clicking new, a yellow box will pop up.


You need to type in the details before you proceed:

enter the details as follows:


Name: Any name youd like
Type: Choose Microsoft windows (in our case)
Version: Choose Windows XP 32 bit (in our case)

After filling details click next button marked with red circle.

4. Now you will see next screen asking memory size.


Memory size: 1024 MB (in our case)
You can either use the slider or you can just write it down there.

Click next once you are done.

Click create a virtual hard drive now.

Click create once you are done.

6. Now select Fixed size and then click next

7. Type the Name youd like


Then enter the size 10 GB (in our case) or you can use the slider

8. Now you will see this screen and it will take few minutes so dont be panic.
So wait and watch.

9. Bravo! You just created virtual configurations. This is how it should look
like. You can see the details circled in black. The details you entered while
creating virtual configurations Remember?

10.Now we will click settings, a window will pop up. On that window we will
select storage tab.

After choosing storage tab then click on empty just under yourname.vhd.
Then click that cd icon to the right end of the application. You will see the
option choose a virtual cd/dvd disk file. Select the option.

12. A window will pop up as you select that option. Once the window will open
then you need to open your downloaded windows XP ISO file like I opened it
in the snapshot.

13. Now it should look like the one circled in my snapshot. After that go to USB
tab.
Follow the arrow in my snapshot.

Then uncheck the option Enable USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller and click OK.

Now click start on the top right side of the application.

2. Cool! Now youve started the virtual machine. It will direct you to this blue
screen.

Then press enter on your keyboard. Now you are about to start the
installation of Windows XP

Now press F8 on your keyboard to proceed.

Now press C to create a partition.

Press enter to create the partition.

Wow! Youve just created the partition. Now press enter again to start the
installation.

Can you see C: Partition1 (new Raw)? Well thats your new partition on which
you are going to install Windows XP also known as C:\ Drive. You will see this
drive later once youve installed the windows.

Now please pay attention. Select the third option Format the partition using
the NTFS file system.
The reason is that the benefit of formatting FAT32 is that all operating systems will recognize
your flash drive, whether it be Windows, OSX, or Linux. If you format NTFS you will only be able
to use the drive on Windows based operating systems. One of the downsides to FAT32 is that the
maximum size for a single file is 4GB, however if you format as NTFS this problem will be
resolved.

You will see the process like this. So let it complete and please do not turn
off the system.

Once the previous process has been completed your system will restart and
then you will see this window.

You are installing windows XP.

11. Fill the details and click next.

12. Enter the product key to proceed. I guess you might have it when you downloaded
Windows XP ISO file it.

In this window either you can click next or you type your password for your
privacy or security options.

You can change the time and time zone by using drop down menu if it is
incorrect.

Once you are done click next.

shown in the snapshot and then click on skip button.

5. CUSTOMIZATIONS IN
WINDOWS XP

Now let me tell you about some basic customizations we can do in


Windows XP.

How to add Desktop icons.


Right click on your mouse on desktop then click properties.

Make sure that you tick check My documents, my network Places, My
Computer

Once you are done click ok and proceed.

Then click apply and Ok.

5. Now I will show how to activate the quick launch.


Right click on your mouse on the blue taskbar down below. You will see a list of
options there click properties.
