Minion Hat Crochet Pattern

Materials: Stitch markers, yarn needle, measuring tape, black button(s), needle and white thread.
Yarn: 5 oz or less of worsted weight cotton in yellow, small amounts of black, brown, white, gray, denim
blue, and pink (recommended brands are Lily Sugarn Cream, Peaches & Creme, Lion Brand Cotton, or
Bernat Handicrafter Cotton.) This pattern was designed and tested with cotton yarn. You may have
different results with other fibers. (Many of my testers did use acrylic yarn successfully with this pattern.)

Gauge: Pattern completed through Rnd 7 = 4 to 4.25 diameter circle, or if you prefer a more traditional
gauge: 15 stitches and 15 rows in sc = 4 x 4 (10 cm x 10 cm).

Special Stitches Definitions:

Magic Ring: You can find directions for the magic ring here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=FHYVutk2iYY. You do not have to use this method; alternate directions are also given.
Invisible Join: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsHggQGFq3A

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Minion Hat: Use J (6 mm) hook or to match gauge.
Notes: The top of this hat is worked in continuous rnds. Add a stitch marker to loop around
hook at end of rnd 1 and move with each rnd. When you have completed the rnd marked with
the size you are making, skip to Rnd 13. Because this hat is worked in sc, youll want to keep
your tension relaxed or the hat will end up too stiff.
Rnd 1: Magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc in ring, join with sl st in first sc, place st marker around loop on
hook, move with each rnd. (6)
OR ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join with sl st in first sc. (6)
Rnd 2:
[sc in ea of next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd.
(24)
(30)
(36)
(42) <-- end here for 0-3 mos
Note: Measure diameter of circle here, it should equal 4 to 4.25. If not, adjust your hook size
up or down as necessary. If hat starts ruffling, then hook size is too big, adjust down.
Rnd 8: [sc in ea of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd. (48) <--end here for 3-6 mos
Rnd 9: [sc in ea of next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd. (54) <--end here for 6-12 mos
Rnd 10: [sc in ea of next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd. (60) <--end here for toddler/child
Rnd 11: [sc in ea of next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd. (66) <--end here for teen/adult
Rnd 12: [sc in ea of next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd. (72) <--end here for large adult
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rnd 13: sc in ea st to end of rnd. Size 0-3 mos and 3-6 mos continue to rnd 14.
Repeat Rnd 13 once for 6-12 mos, twice for toddler/child, twice for teen/adult, and 3 times for
large adult.
Rnd 14: To end last rnd: sl st in next st, fasten off. Attach black yarn in any st, ch 1, sc in each
st to end of rnd, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 15: ch 1, sc in each st to end of rnd, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 15 once, or until desired width for larger sizes. (Dont worry about the way
the join looks, you will sew the minions eye(s) over this section.)

Rnd 17: To end last rnd: sl st in next st, fasten off. Attach yellow yarn in any st, ch 1, sc in each
st to end of rnd, join with sl st in first sc. (ch 1 only for the next rnd, but do not repeat it for the
following rnds.)
Rnd 18: sc in each st to end of rnd, do not join, place stitch marker around loop on hook and
move with each rnd.
Repeat Rnd 18 until hat reaches following measurements:
(Optional: To use denim blue for last rnd, subtract a half inch off length in chart below.)
0-3 Months: Continue until hat measures about 5 from crown to brim.
3-6 Months: Continue until hat measures about 5 to 5.5 from crown to brim.
6-12 Months: Continue until hat measures about 6 from crown to brim.

Teen/Adult: Continue until hat measures about 7.5 to 8 from crown to brim.
Large Adult: Continue until hat measures about 8 to 8.5 from crown to brim.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Small Goggle Eye: Use H (5 mm) hook.
Note: Make one or two, depending on size of hat. (its harder to fit two eyes on the smaller
Fasten off brown yarn (with invisible join), attach white yarn in any st.
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st to end of rnd, do not join. (24)
Rnd 3: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st] repeat to end of rnd, sc in last st. (36)
Fasten off white yarn (with invisible join), attach gray yarn in any st.
Rnd 4: ch 1, sc in each st to end of rnd, join with sl st in first sc. (36)
Rnd 5: ch 1, sc in FLO of each st to end of rnd, use invisible join to fasten off, leave a 24 tail to
sew on hat with yarn needle.
Weave in all ends (except long tail end).
sew across the bottom of the tongue in a single line (on hat), go back and forth a few times at
the corner, and then extend it out in a single line a little bit further. (I went back and forth 3-5
