Hotel

A hotel is an establishment that provides paid lodging on a short-term

basis. The provision of basic accommodation, in times past, consisting
only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has
largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including en-suite
bathrooms and air conditioning or climate control. Additional common
features found in hotel rooms are a telephone, an alarm clock, a
television, a safe, a mini-bar with snack foods and drinks, and facilities
for making tea and coffee. Luxury features include bathrobes and
slippers, pillow, twin-sink vanities, and Jacuzzi bathtubs. Larger hotels
may provide additional guest facilities such as a restaurant, swimming
pool, fitness center, business center, childcare, conference facilities and
social function services. Hotel rooms are usually numbered (or named in
some smaller hotels and B&BS) to allow guests to identify their room.
Some hotels offer meals as part of a room and board arrangement. In
the United Kingdom, a hotel is required by law to serve food and drinks
to all guests within certain stated hours. In Japan, capsules hotel provide
a minimized amount of room space and shared facilities. Hotel
management is a significant career. Larger hotels may operate with an
extensive management structure consisting of a General Manager which
serves as the head executive, department heads that oversee various
departments, middle managers, administrative staff, and line-level
supervisors. Degree programs such as hospitality management studies, a
business degree, and/or certification programs prepare hotel managers
for industry practice. The word hotel is derived from the French hotel
(coming from hotel meaning host), which referred to a French version of
a townhouse or any other building seeing frequent visitors, rather than a
place offering accommodation. In contemporary French usage, hotel
now has the same meaning as the English term, and hotel particular is

used for the old meaning. The French spelling, with the circumflex, was
also used in English, but is now rare. The circumflex replaces thes
found in the earlier hostel spelling, which over time took on a new, but
closely related meaning. Grammatically, hotels usually take the definite
article hence The Astoria Hotel or simply The Astoria.

Hotel services
The number and the amount of people engaged in them depend on the
size of the hotel as well as on its status. Typically, the basic hotel
services include reception guests, room service, food service, including
restaurants in the hotel, and security. Sometimes in the small hotels the
duties of security, a cook and a cleaner are performed by the owner
himself. Other services offered to guests of the hotel, can be considered
as bonuses. These are the laundry service, massage room, fitness gyms,
conference rooms, lock boxes for valuable assets and many other things.
These services can be included in the price of the room or paid
separately. Recently, the hotel industry trends towards separating the
services sector between hotels. Many hotels nowadays offer recreation
for a particular group of tourists. Popular family hotels, hotels for the
newlyweds and hotels for people with disabilities each of them has its
unique set of services. For example in the family hotel clients are offered
services of child care and game rooms. In the hotel for the newlyweds
there is a special service for weddings. In the hotel for disabled persons
there is medical support service.
Among the services that are indirectly related to the customers, that
means that they are not involved in direct care of guests, are marketing
service and bookkeeping of the hotel. Reservation, once considered one
of the main hotel services, today has become an anachronism.
Nowadays, in order to book a hotel clients use services of the major tour

operators. Online booking through the numerous tourist online services

is getting increasingly popular. Often the responsibilities of some hotel
services are assigned to the other companies. In the United States and
Western Europe the network of special hotel firms, which offer their
services to the hotels, is widely developed. Typically, if the hotel uses
the services of such companies, the price of the rooms will be slightly
lower than in a hotel that provides a full range of hotel services on its
own.

Restaurant
A restaurant prepares and serves food and drink to customers in return
for money. Meals are generally served and eaten on premises, but many
restaurants also offer take-out and food delivery services. Restaurants
vary greatly in appearance and offerings, including a wide variety of the
main chefs cuisines and service models.
While inns and taverns were known from antiquity, these were
establishments aimed at travelers, and in general locals would rarely eat
there. Modern restaurants are dedicated to the serving of food, where
specific dishes are ordered by guests and are prepared to their request.
The modern restaurant originated in 18th century France, although
precursors can be traced back to Roman times.
A restaurant owner is called a restaurateur both words derive from the
French verb restaurer, meaning to restore. Professional artisans of
cooking are called chefs, while preparation staff and line cooks prepare
food items in a more systematic and less artistic fashion. Restaurants
range from unpretentious lunching or dining places catering to people
working nearby, with simple food served in simple settings at low prices,
to expensive establishments serving refined food and wines in a formal
setting. In the former case, customers usually wear casual clothing. In

the latter case, depending on culture and local traditions, customers

might wear semi-casual, semi-formal, or even in rare cases formal wear.
Typically, customers sit at tables, their orders are taken by a waiter, who
brings the food when it is ready, and the customers pay the bill before
leaving. In finer restaurants there will be a host or hostess or even a
matre dhtel to welcome customers and to seat them. Other staffs
waiting on customers include busboys and sommeliers.
Restaurants often specialize in certain types of food or present a certain
unifying, and often entertaining, theme. For example, there are seafood
restaurants, vegetarian restaurants or ethnic restaurants. Generally
speaking, restaurants selling food characteristic of the local culture are
simply called restaurants, while restaurants selling food of foreign
cultural origin are called accordingly.

Hotels and Restaurants bolster up local businesses and help in their

growth and expansion; provide for business travelers, facilitate
organizing of conventions and conferences, host not only for meals but
also cater to wedding functions. Hotel are decent venue to hold meetings
for training, business promotions, and trade fairs. They offer
personalized services that is a cut above the others.
The course in Hotel and Restaurant Management provides opportunities
to individuals to learn the skills to serve the guests in a positive
ambience in various capacities, vis--vis: Guest Service Manager,
Reservation clerks, concierge, front office managing, food & beverage
handlers, telephone operators, security, book-keepers, cashiers, room
service helpers, and house-keepers. Some may start with laundry room,
food service, or work behind the scenes, such as chefs, cooks, saucier,
and bakers. There are ample opportunities to work in departments such
as in Engineering, Personnel, Training, Banquets Departments, Sales and

Marketing. There are a lot more opportunities for those who seek job
satisfaction by working diligently, honestly and dedicatedly.
