Job Application Form

Related Section of pack: Working in the UK

Aim:

To introduce learners to job application forms and to help them set out
their details and experience in writing.

Materials:

Task sheet (blank application form) and real job advertisements

(supplied by teacher)

ESOL level:

Intermediate 2

SCQF level:

Time:

60 mins

Preparation:

Find a selection of real job ads

Tutor ensures he/she is up to date with basic current employment
practices e.g. age, racial and sexual orientation discrimination in the
EU and Scotland. You are not allowed to discriminate on any of these
grounds (compare with students own countries). For instance, you
cannot advertise for a single young British man aged 25 35!
Copy the blank application form and the completed form for each
student to work on. The tutor should ask the students to try and write
one simple paragraph (three of four sentences) in the further
information section. Allow students to see the model answer before
writing their own versions. Use the completed template to compare and
guide students with their writing.

In class:
1) Ask students to brainstorm what is needed in a job application form and what
information employers will need (vocabulary building: 15 minutes).
2) Students are given the template to help them prepare. Tutor looks at the
template and answers questions.
3) Tutor hands out completed form to help students complete their own
templates.
4) Tutor asks students to complete forms for homework.
Variation:

Students bring in real forms that they wish to complete or tutor cuts out
simple job advertisements from the newspaper/web for students to
examine and write their own job advertisements.

Assessment: The task helps prepare learners for the following summative
assessment:
Intermediate 2 English for Work and Study Outcomes 1, 2 & 3
