Course Content:
Relevance of geology to engineering.Summary of the structure of the planet earth.Minerals and rocks; the
common rock-forming minerals origin, distribution, identification and classification. External earth
processes: weathering; principle, processes and agents. Erosion and evolution of land forms.
Sedimentation; principles and processes. Sedimentary rocks Basic principles of stratigraphy; the geologic
time scale; the importance of fossils. Internal earth processes; igneous processes plutonic & volcanic:
metamorphic processes, metamorphism types; deformation processes, fault and folds. Fundamentals of
plate tectonics; earthquakes. Distribution of rocks minerals and principal geologic features (structures) in
Nigeria.
Course Description:
CVE314 introduces the students to geology and its relevance to engineering. It exposes them to the
external and internal factors shaping the earths surfaces and principal geologic features in Nigeria
Course Justification
The course increases the awareness of the students of geologic minerals and rocks around them and
likewise exposes them on how they can be harnessed. It also increases their appreciation of their practical
relevance in Engineering projects such as road construction, foundations, water resources exploitation,
petroleum exploitation, dam construction, etc
Course objectives
At the end of this course, students would be able to:
i. Appreciate the relevance of geology to engineering
ii. Identify materials that have useful application in construction projects and methods for harnessing
them
iii. Appreciate the adverse effects of geologic processes on engineering projects which must be taken
into consideration in the planning, design , construction and maintenance of such projects
iv.
Appreciate the geologic features in Nigeria

Course Requirements
70% attendance is mandatory to be able to write final exams
Compulsory participation in group project/term paper which will be defended in the class before
submission
