CHAPTER II

School Description

2.1 Brief History


Yayasan Pesantren Islam Al Azhar was established on April 7, 1952 by 14 prominent
Indonesian moslem figures and a number of citizen leaders in Jakarta. At first, it was named
Yayasan Pesantren Islam. One of the proponents of this school is The Ministry of Social Affairs,
dr. Syamsuddin. The establishmeny of this school was also supported by Sjamsuridjal as the
Major of Jakarta Raya.
Yayasan Pesantren Islam had been built from 1953 to 1958. At first, it was only a big
mosque located in a luxurious place in Jakarta Regency, called Masjid Kebayoran. In 1961,
Mahmoud Syaltout, the grand Syekh of Al-Azhar Cairo went to Indonesia and visited Masjid
Kebayoran. At that time, he was treated as an honorable guest that was welcome by Ust Buya
Hamka. Buya Hamka was one of the Indonesian moslem who was awarded Doctor Honoris
Causa from the Cairo University. In that special occasion, Mahmoud Syaltout gave new name for
Masjid Kebayoran, Masjid Al Azhar.
There are various Islam related activities in Masjid Al Azhar, and the interest of the
people from the surrounding of the mosque is growing up and increasing continuously. At the
beginning, there were only several people who participated in Masjid Al Azhar activities. But
now, the community members of Masjid Al Azhar are from all around Indonesia.

The lustrous moslem activities and member activities in Masjid Al- Azhar cannot be
detached from the contribution of Prof Dr. Buya Hamka as the first leader in this Mosque. Prof.
Dr. Buya Hamka also helps Al Azhar Islamic Schools to grow and develop to become such a
good school today and this school was firstly based in Masjid Al- Azhar.
Nowadays, there are schools under the authority of Al Azhar Islamic School built and
developed in some cities in Indonesia. One of them is the one located in Surabaya that divided
into three campuses. First, Campus A is located at Laguna Jl. Florence j-4 no.31 Surabaya Timur.
This campus has three level of school, are KB-TKIA 15, SDIA 35 (Internasional Standart),
SMPIA 13. Second, Campus B is in a place Jl. Raya Mulyosari, 368, Surabaya. For campus B
just has one level of school, is SDIA 11. Lastly, Campus C is at Kompleks Masjid Baiturrozaq
Citraland, Lontar, Surabaya Barat. This campus has one level of school, is KB-TKIA 35.

2.2.1 School Profile


YPI Al Azhar Indonesia has several branches that spread around Indonesia, including in
East Java. Surabaya is the first branch that is placed by YPI Al Azhar Indonesia in East Java
and named YPI Al Azhar Jawa Timur.
YPI Al Azhar Jawa Timur is International Islamic School which is using Cambridge
Curriculum in learning process for teachers and students who come from different background
with spirit of Islamic Circumstance. Being an Islamic School means school have the point that all
elements of school must be educated in intelligence, integrity, physical and moral for developing
knowledge based on The Unity of God.

YPI Al Azhar Jawa Timur has three campuses which are located around Surabaya.
Specifically, the writer did Internship at Campus A which is located at Laguna Jl. Florence J-4
No.31 Surabaya Timur. This campus has three different levels of school. Those are KB-TKIA 15,
SDIA 35 (Internasional Standart), SMPIA 13.

2.3 Vision and Mission


2.3.1 Vision
The visions of this school are:
To create the educated Moslems who obey to Allah, have good behavior, health
physically and mentally, smart, intelligent, skillful, confident, have strong characteristic, have
persistence and are able to develop themselves and family, and have good responsibility to
develop the society and the nation.

2.3.2 Missions
The missions of this schools are:
1. To create religion and technological education system based on obedience to Allah
2. To become a future leader who master both religiouns and general knowledge
3. To become the frontrunner among others in terms of students and teachers quality as well

as the methodology
4. To spread the high quality Islamic-based education through technology and qualified

teachers.
5. To help educating for children by assembling learning outside classroom

1. School Manager
- The School Manager is responsible for:

3. Vice School Principal
- The Vice Principal have someis responsiblresponsibilitiese to

Principal in providing administration and leadership.

components of school.
4. Vice Principal of Employment
- The Vice Principal of Employment is responsible for monitoring and coordinating all rights
and needs employee generally.

5. Vice Principal Curriculum
- The Vice Principal Curriculum is responsible for:
1. Mmanaging and planning in the preparation of educational system, such as provide
textbook for students and teachers, also create appropriate classroom for learning process.

- The Vice Principal of Financial is responsible for planning, budgeting, and reviewing

9. Vice principal of Public Relation


- The Vice Principal of Public Relation is responsible for
1. Mmanaging all things that related to community of citizen whether internally or
externally for helping all school activities.
2. B- The Vice Principal of Public Relation is in charge of building relationship between
school and students parents.
3. - The Vice Principal of Public Relation is also Oorganizing social charity, field trip and
education show at school.
10. Vice principal of Religions Development
- The Vice Principal of Religions Development is responsible in developing, producing and
handling the preparation and implementation of behavior students, teachers and all staff.
- The Vice Principal of Religions Development is also to arrange students for understanding and
reading Koran.
11. Teachers
- Teachers are responsible for following tasks:
1. Planning and teaching classes.
2. Assessing and evaluating students.
3. Informing students progress to their parents.
4. Developing students knowledge properly.

2.7 Facilities
The students and teachers of Yayasan Pesantren Islam Al Azhar Jawa Timur are able to
join and use some facilities which provided by school, such as classroom with AC, comfortable
school environment completed with CCTV Camera, dining room, library, music room, indoor
and outdoor playground, Wi-fi Network, sports courts, mosque, cafeteria, art gallery, stage of art,
science laboratorium, IT laboraturium, discussion room, conselling room and fitting room. But,
people from outside school are also allowed to use several facilities. These are mosque and
canteen.
