Character Traits w/text

John Proctor has an ironic
personality because he is a hypocrite
in the way that he cheats on his
wife, but he hates hypocrites. His
wife [loses] all faith in him, (75)
as he wears a mask of sin. He is a
loving husband in the aspect that he
will always show love and affection
towards his wife. This is clear when
he says, I will bring you home
soon, (77) that he still loves his
wife very much. John Proctor
regards himself as an important
man, but lets guilt run his life.
Abigail is a sly, murderous, and
intelligent character that runs the
show. Not only does she have the
conflict of convincing everyone that
the wild forest act, was Titubas
fault, but she also had a relationship
with John proctor, Elizabeths wife.
Abigail continues to be all over the
place, corrupting and accusing
people as she screams, I saw
Goody Booth with the Devil! (48).
Not only this, but she also accused
Elizabeth Proctor for attempted
murder. This twisted scene resulted
in Mary getting [charged] on the
cold and cruel murder of Abigail
(76).
Reverend Samuel Parris is a quickangered man and evidence of this is,
He felt insulted if someone rose to
shut the door without asking for
permission (3). Parris is very
attention-seeking as he values his
reputation dearly. His power-hungry
attitude is e ident when he exclaims
Dont a minister deserve a house to
live in (30).

Relationships
John Proctor had a relationship
with his past housekeeper
which subsided when his wife
found out and Proctor has
spent his life building up his
wife, Elizabeth and his
relationship. Elizabeth and
John Proctor try to rebuild
their once stable marriage in
this book.

Abigail Williams is the niece

of Reverend Parris, the
minister of Salem and this
causes drama for the Reverend
who tries to uphold a strong
Christian honor and Abigail
seemingly is a threat to his
respect. Abigail also had a
relationship with John Proctor,
Elizabeths husband. She was
the housekeeper and caused
many problems in this story.

Reverend Parris has a servant

named Tituba who is claimed
to be the main factor in the
Salem Witch Trials. This is
ironic because the minister has
all of the witchcraft being
taken place in his house. Parris
is also the uncle of Abigail
Williams and the father of
Betty Parris. He regards

Elizabeth Proctor

Rev. John Hale

Giles Corey

Elizabeth Proctor holds a grudge

and is slow to trust. At the dinner
table, [she] slowly loses her trust in
him (75). Although she has her
doubts about her husband, she is a
loving mother and wife. As she is
taken to court, she exclaims that she
wishes for the kids not to know
where she is. Instead, to save those
of fear, she says, Tell them Ive
gone to visit someone sick, (78).
This quality shows compassion and
dignity. Though she may have a cold
shoulder towards John Proctor, she
is a loving mother.
Hale is an intelligent man with his
knowledge of witchcraft. He is an
upcoming minister on the rise and is
strong in his Christianity. He is a
well-respected man with high author
with high authority. He is sent to
Parriss house to help rip and tear

authority to everyone.
Elizabeth is the wife of John
Proctor and the mother of her
children whom she loves
dearly. She also has a
relationship with her new
housekeeper, but not the
relationship she thinks they
have. Mary Warren is the
house keeper, but is threatened
to lie to Elizabeth by Abigail,
her former house keeper and
Johns mistress.

Reverend John Hale is not on

a personal connection with
anybody in the first two
scenes. Having read the book,
he does in the future. For now,
he is on a regular face to face
basis with everyone in the
society, trying to determined
who should be convicted of
witchcraft.

Thomas Putnam

Rebecca Nurse

Mary Warren

Betty Parris

Thomas Putnam was a man with

many grievances (14). Thomas
Putnams brother in law, James
Bayley represents one of his
grievances. Bayley did not get
accepted as a minister. He also had a
stepbrother, who received the
majority of the money in his fathers
will, reflecting another grievance.
Many more accounts of grievances
are listed I the side note about him.
All of these unfortunate events
against him resulted in him accusing
people of witchcraft. This reflects
his ability to hold a grudge. He
holds grudges and he is an
unfortunate man.
Rebecca is a proud woman because
she enjoyed the high opinion
people had for [her husband] (25).
Rebecca looks down on people and
holds herself to a higher standard.
On page 39, Rebecca exclaims
Goody Anns name in
disappointment, appointing herself
as the better woman.
Mary Warren is gullible, timid, and
insecure. She is easily influenced to
lie to the Proctors by Abigail,
demonstrating her gullibility and
insecurity. She continues to be timid
as she is over and over again
sobbing, (81) because Proctor is
yelling at her.
Betty Paris is rebellious and
depressed in the first act. She
demonstrates an act of rebellion as
she took part in witchcraft in the
forest. She is seen as possessed as
she screams, Let me fly to Mama,
(19). Her mother has passed away
and while she is possessed, her
longing for her mother comes out.

Thomas Putnam continues to

be an unlucky man as he
consistently loses seven
children. His relationship with
they was never able to happen,
due to them passing at birth.
Goody Putnam is his wife and
they continue to hope for a
healthy child.

Rebecca [is] the wife of

Francis Nurse, (25) and she
has multiple children. Later in
the novel, Goody Putnam
accuses Rebecca of witchcraft.
This is not important in the
first two scenes, but this is
another bad relationship
between two characters In the
future.
Mary Warren is the Proctor
housekeeper and does not have
any family relationships,
except for the fact that she
persuaded to help Abigail. Her
relationships arent touched on
often.
Betty Parris is the daughter of
Reverend Parris. Her mom
passed away and her father is
extremely close to her. He is
very keen in finding out
everything to protect his
daughter and identity. Abigail
is the cousin of Betty Parris
and was with her in the woods,
along with others.
