Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to determine the strength of
Potassium Permanganate with a standard Sodium Oxalate solution.

Theory:In this experiment, Potassium Permanganate solution is standardized with

the help of a standard Sodium Oxalate solution. The reaction that occurs here
is oxidation and reduction reaction.
An oxidation-reduction reaction (red ox) is a reaction in which electrons are
transferred between species or in which atoms change oxidation numbers.
Oxidation is the half reaction in which there is loss of electrons by a species (or
increase of oxidation number of an atom). Reduction is the half reaction in
which there is a gain of electrons by a species (or decrease of oxidation number
of an atom).
Reaction involved in this experiment is:
MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- Mn+2 + 4H2O
2KMnO4 + 5Na2C2O4 + 8H2SO4 K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 5Na2SO4 + 10CO2 + 8H2O
In this reaction, MnO4- is reduced to Mn+2 and Na2C2O4 is oxidized to CO2.
KMnO4 acts as an auto catalyst in this reaction. This is the advantage of
KMnO4 that it serves as its own indicator, the pink color being distinguishable
even if the solution is very dilute. Therefore no indicator is used in this
reaction.

Calculation:-

From Vred X Sred = Vox X Sox

Here,

VNa2C2O4 = 10 ml
SNa2C2O4 = 0.1 N
VKMnO4 = 14.233 ml
SKMnO4 = ?
So,
10 X 0.1 = 14.233 X SKMnO4
=> SKMnO4 = 0.0703N

Result:-

The Determined Strength of Potassium Permanganate Solution is = 0.103 N

Error:Percentage of error = (known value ~observed value) X 100 known value

= (0.0703-0.07) X 100 /0.07
= 0.43 %

Discussion:The following causes can be assumed for the slight deviation of the result
from the original one:
1. While taking KMnO4 solution from the burette, one or two drops might fall
on the body surface of the conical flask and might stick on it. These drops
would not participate in the reaction but these drops were counted in the
reading.
2. In the distilled water, there remains some reducing agent which reacts
With MnO2 and produces more MnO2 and more auto decomposition occur.
This is also responsible for erroneous result.
