Objectives: by the end of the lesson the students will have:

Language Functions:

F2: to argue/justify opinions/personal points of view
F3: to ask and offer clarifications in understanding of a message
F4: to ask and offer details and explanations of a message
Techniques: conversation, dialogues, pair work
Types of interaction: frontal, pair work
Assumptions: the topic will raise the students' interest.
Personal aim: to reduce the teaching talking time during the class
Anticipated Problems
Some students may have problems in understanding specific words in the text.
Some students will use the native language instead of English.
Solutions
Ask the students to infer the meaning of the unknown words from the context
Encourage students to use English.

The teacher tells the students that today will learn about success from a famous ChineseAmerican writer by studying an excerpt from her book.

pictures on the page 182 and make connections between the pictures.
