School Board approves literacy goal

The Germantown School Board last
week approved the literary goal in the
district for the next school year.
At the start of discussion at the
Feb. 8 board meeting, Brenda O' Brien,
director of teaching and learning, said
the literacy goal came about as a result
of talking with reading specialists and
teachers. O'Brien said the staff indicated they would want to see reading and
writing blended together in teaching.
The goal states the district wants to
"cultivate the love of reading, through
opportunities where students are
working with a variety of texts, attaining and applying skills and strategies
to be independent, life long readers."

The document states that to accomplish the goal, reading instruction

must "foster students development as
they move along a continuum of foundational skills and strategies," celebrating student interests, expanding
students interests by exposing them to
different genres and themes; "fostering
communication through writing,
speaking and listening during literate
conversations and correspondences,"
engaging students in problem-seeking
and problem-solving and honoring creativity.
According to the approved document, strengths of literacy instruction
include having more books in students

hands, students choosing to read when

they complete other work, incorporation of student choice into reading and
students are communicating through
listening, speaking and writing.
Donation approved
The board accepted the donation of
23 various-sized computer tables and
desks, one whiteboard, two 100-foot
wide wall mount projector screens, 16
office task chairs, two HP laptop docking stations, 20 power strips, 50 patch
cables of various length and ten computer mice from Craig Douglas, senior
director of operations for 360training.com, for district-wide use.

District Administrator Jeff Holmes

said the company shut down a location
in another community and provided
the items to the district.
Travel request approved
The board approved the request of
the Germantown High School Key Club
for an overnight travel requests to
attend the WIUM Key Club District
Leadership Conference March 11-13 in
Green Bay. Eleven students will be
traveling to the event and all costs will
be paid through the Key Club fund
raising account.

DOT plans open house on Hwy. 175 project

The

Street starting in March. Improvements
slated to occur include new concrete
curb and gutter, storm sewer, asphalt
pavement, a shared-use path, new signing and pavement marking, and a

roundabout at the intersection of Hwys

from the DOT, Mashuda Contractors of
Princeton, Wis. has been awarded the
$6.64 million contract.
A public open house on the project
has been scheduled for 4 to 6:30 p.m.
Feb. 17 at the Richfield Fire Station,
2008 Hwy. 175. Project plans, , detour

Roskopf Named DAISY Award Winner

Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin
Community
Memorial
Hospital recently announced Andrea
Roskopf, registered nurse, as this quarters DAISY award winner. Honored at a
Jan. 15 ceremony, Roskopf is currently
a nurse in Home Today Surgery. She
started her career with Froedtert & the
Medical
College
of
Wisconsin
Community Memorial Hospital in 2009
as a certified nursing assistant in the
Medical Unit. After earning her nursing
degree, Roskopf worked on the fifth
floor nursing unit at Community
Memorial Hospital. She transitioned to
her current role in 2013. Roskopf is a
resident of Menomonee Falls.
Nominated anonymously by a past
patient, the nominator told the story of
the pre-surgical care Roskopf provided
prior to cataract surgery. Roskopf
offered warm blankets and comforting
conversation until surgery began. The
nominator described Roskopf as "an
awesome nurse who anticipates a
patients needs."
DAISY, an acronym for Diseases
Attacking the Immune System, recognizes nurses as unsung heroes of health
care for the outstanding work they do
every day. More than 1,000 hospitals
nationwide participate in the DAISY
award program. The DAISY Foundation

provides each recipient with a sculpture, "A Healers Touch," that is handcarved for the foundation by artists of
the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The
sculpture is made of Serpentine stone
that comes from the mountains "where
the most powerful shaman" live in
Zimbabwe. The foundation chose this
design not only because it depicts the
relationship nurses have with their
patients, but also because the Shona
people hold their healers in a position
of great importance to the community
and feel about their healers the way
The DAISY Foundation and Community
Memorial Hospital feel about nurses.
Froedtert & the Medical College of
Wisconsin
Community
Memorial

communities, is a full-service hospital

Josephs Hospital, West Bend; and more

BOYS BASKETBALL

Germantown tops
Grafton, Whitefish Bay
The Germantown boys basketball
team jumped out to an 11-2 lead
against Grafton Feb. 5 and kept the
lead on the way to a 84-65 win.
Two baskets by Conner Edmonds
were followed by a basked by Max
Keefe to start the game. Luke
Benzschawel got the Blackhawks on
the board with a basket at the 15:57
mark, but Kyle Clow answered with a
basket for Germantown on the other
end of the court. A three-point basket
by Ryan Mongan at the 12:40 mark
started a 12-point run that gave
Germantown a 28-7 lead.
Germantown held a 45-22 lead by
halftime and kept a lead of 20 points
through most of the second half.
Juwan McCloud led Germantown with
26 points while Max Keefe added 21
points for the Warhawks.

Afterward, Germantown Coach

Mark Adams noted the team had
intense practices during the week,
which carried over into the game.
Adams cited the work of Mongan,
"who did some nice things defensively" at the start of the game while also
converting four three-point baskets.
Germantown followed the win with
a 101-74 victory over Whitefish Bay
Feb. 9. Keefe scored 28 points while
McCloud added 24 points and Clow
scored 20 points. After the Whitefish
Bay game, Germantown was leading
the North Shore Conference with a 101 conference record and a 14-4 overall
mark.
Germantown was scheduled to play
at Cedarburg Feb. 12. The Bulldogs are
second in the conference with a 9-2
record.

Master Meat Crafter Class of 2016 includes Dean Rindahl of Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly
Twenty-five individuals, including
Dean Rindahl from Fox Bros. Piggly
Wiggly, were awarded the distinction of
Master Meat Crafter by the University of
Wisconsin-Madison
Meat
Science
Extension
and
the
Wisconsin
Department of Agriculture, Trade, and
Consumer Protection Jan. 22. This is
the third graduating class of the Master
Meat Crafter program a two year training course focused on meat science and
specialty meat product manufacture.
The graduation event took place in
Madison, Wisconsin where participants
presented their individual plant projects during the day Jan. 21 and 22.
Featured speakers of the evening
included Wisconsin Secretary of
Agriculture, Ben Brancel, UW College of
Agricultural and Life Sciences Dean
Kate Vandenbosch, and UW-Madison
Department of Animal Sciences Chair,
Dan Schaefer.
"Congratulations to all the Master

Meat Crafters for their commitment to

developing and perfecting their skills."
Said Department of Agriculture, Trade
and Consumer Protection (DATCP)
Secretary Ben Brancel. "The breadth of
projects completed by these graduates
will benefit not only their individual
meat businesses but the entire specialty meats industry."
The Master Meat Crafter program
comprises several meat science short
courses and workshops, and extensive
mentorship program to share the knowledge gained with employees or coworkers, and individual research projects
based in the candidates processing
plants, Topics covered throughout the
two year training course include general meat processing, fresh meats, cured,
fermented and dried products, cooked
and emulsified products, food safety
and meat microbiology, and development/implementation
of
HACCP
(Hazard Analysis and Critical Control

Points). "Master Meat Crafter graduates

set the Wisconsin meat industry apart
as a leader in the nation," added
Brancel. "We welcome anyone from
other states to come learn from our
Master Meat Crafter Program."
This unique program had humble
beginnings as a means to strengthen
and improve the meat industry in
Wisconsin. As the initiative gained
momentum, the Master Meat Crafter
brand has expanded as far as the east
coast and Alberta, Canada. Upon status,
each graduate will be able to exhibit
their expertise and knowledge by use of
the Master Meat Crafter logo on their
product labels, signage, web presence,
or personal branding.
The Master Meat Crafter Program has
been developed in conjunction with the
Specialty Meat Development center and
is supported by DATCP, University of
Wisconsin Meat Science Extension,
University of Wisconsin-Madison, and

the Wisconsin Association of Meat

Processors. The goals of the program
are to: 1) provide participants with well
rounded, in-depth, and comprehensive
knowledge about meat science/meat
processing principles, 2) provide development opportunities for the future
meat industry leaders, and 3) help
ensure the US meat industry remains
strong and viable for years to come. It
was created and is currently organized
by Dr. Jeff Sindelar, University of
Wisconsin-Madison Associate Professor
and Extension Meat Specialist.
In the six years since the Master
Meat Crafter Program began, Fox Bros.
Piggly Wiggly is proud to have had two
team members graduate from the program. In addition to Dean Rindahl,
Curtis Lam has also completed the two
year program. Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly
has seven locations including Hartland,
Oconomowoc,
Hartford,
Slinger,
Jackson, Richfield, and Saukville.

Know the ABCs of heart health

this American Heart Month
By: Janet Wright, MD
Heart disease and stroke are the first
and fourth leading causes of death in the
United States. Heart disease is responsible for 1 of every 4 deaths in the country. For some groups, such as African
Americans, the burden is even greater.
As a nation, we canand mustchange
these numbers. The good news is that
heart disease and stroke can be prevented, and FebruaryAmerican Heart
Monthis a great time to refresh your
memory on the small but important
actions you can take.
The national Million Hearts initiative is working to prevent 1 million
heart attacks and strokes by 2017. How
can you reduce your risk? One way is to
know your ABCS:
Ask your health care provider
about taking Aspirin.
Make control your goal: if you
have high Blood Pressure, work with
your health care provider to get it
under control.
Find out how to best manage high
Cholesterol.
Stop Smokingor dont start.
A: Aspirin
Talk to your health care provider
and team to see if taking an aspirin
each day is right for you.
B: Blood Pressure Control
High blood pressure is one of the
leading causes of heart disease and
stroke. One in three American adults
has high blood pressurethats about 70

million people. Unfortunately, less than

half of people with high blood pressure
have their condition under control.
Work with your health care team to
find out if you have high blood pressure. If you do, take steps to reduce it:
Get active by exercising for at
least 30 minutes most days of the week.
Eat a heart-healthy diet that is
high in fresh fruits and vegetables and
low in sodium, saturated and trans fats,
and cholesterol.
Follow your health care provider's
instructions when it comes to taking
medicines or measuring your blood
pressure at home.
C: Cholesterol
High cholesterol affects 1 in 3
American adults. Getting a simple blood
test is the only way you can know if
have high cholesterol. Your doctor can
suggest steps you can take to prevent
high cholesterol or to reduce your levels if they are high.
S: Smoking
Cigarette smoking greatly increases
your risk for heart disease. If you're a
smoker, quit as soon as possible, and if
you don't smoke, don't start. Get help
