ACT I

(Written as a multi-role monologue,

but can be performed as a group piece
by using stage directions.)
LAURA is stood alone. She's in reflection, but
not deeply so. She talks directly to the
audience (unless otherwise noted).
LAURA
It all started with a simple tweet. All I said, in
that tiny 140 character sentence was - "OMFG, Gaga
has more followers than the Pope. Religion 0 - 1
Gaga." Little was I to know the absolute circus that
itd kick up... It all started when someone called
jesuslovesme tweeted back. He said
@JESUSLOVESME
Appearing on-stage to cut her off.
Jesus has more followers than Gaga. God too. God
doesnt keep score.
LAURA
Well, that of course made everything explode. The
thing with social media is everyone has their
opinion and gets to say it. The problem with the
Internet, of course, is that if youre on the
Internet, youre never wrong...
@JESUSLOVESME
Well, none of Gods creatures are wrong, are they?
In his divine wisdom he made us all equals.
@TROLLOL
Appearing almost from nowhere, butting in
another unwanted opinion. And they know it.
Well, not really. Gaga sold more records than me so
were not equal.
LAURA
Then it got bad. (Beat.) Whenever people mention
religion, you get the zealots and the extreme
atheists. In this case, it was neither. It was
someone called @trollol and, well, theyre whats
known as a troll. They go out of their way to stir
things up.
@TROLLOL
No we don't.
LAURA
To @TROLLOL.
Yes you do, were not getting into this again.

@TROLLOL
Thats because Im right. Another way of proving
were not equals jesus-boy! Gaga sold 23m albums.
Christ sold? 0. Gaga 2, Pop and God nil.
LAURA
Of course, then there are the people that think they
are the peacekeepers of the world wide web. They
generally just annoy people and incite them to
further pointless so-called debate. They don't mean
to, they just seem to believe they can calm people
down and should be listened to.
@HIPPYJUICE
Wanders on as Laura is talking.
Hey man just relax. Gagas cool and Jesus is chill
too yknow? I mean, you can love them both. Thats
how were equal we can all be loved.
@TROLLOL
Try telling that to my ex. And you're saying we all
have to be bi?
LAURA
Stepping in quickly at first with a
disapproving look at @trollol, before resuming
a natural pace.
Of course, all the attempted quietening of the
argument does is provide more fuel for the flames.
But what I was trying to say with my original tweet
was - doesnt it say something about society when
music outstrips what once controlled the world?

Christ didnt control the world though, he saved it
from its sins. What has Gaga done?

Like Jesus, Gaga unites people in their love for
something.
@JESUSLOVESME
Jesus died for our sins and made people love each
other. Gaga made some tinkling about bad romances
the opposite of love.
LAURA
Snapping in to prevent further interruptions.
She silences the other characters and sends
them away. Left alone on stage, she makes her
point.
Bottom line is, its not what I was talking about, a
genuine point of concern, that defines how society
is going. Its the way people converse to each other
separate rooms, countries and continents. Never

seeing who theyre fighting, allowing them to not

care about what their words mean and do. Social
media, has removed the necessity of society and
were at each others throats. What does it say
about us, that belief is succumbing to pop and that
culture is becoming devoid of personal familiarity?
