Prerequisites:

Completion of fluid mechanics course(s) at the undergraduate level.

Grade Determination:

Four (4) in-class assignments/quizzes - 5% each (20%).

Lab Reports (2 experimental and 2 computational) - 5% each (20%)
Project and Presentation - 20%
Final Exam on April 21, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 40%

Notes:
The four quizzes for Sections 1 & 2 will be written in ER 1120 on January 28, February 11, March 10
and March 31, 2016 @ 9:00 am. Therefore, Section 2 students are required to attend the morning
classes on these specified days instead of the afternoon classes.
A Group of students will be assigned a self-study project to be completed by the last day of lectures. A
List of project topics will be provided by the instructor. Other topics are allowed, but approval is
required from the instructor and must be obtained before you begin work on the selected project.
For Lab Reports, each group of two students is required to submit 4 reports (each 3 pages maximum).
The following computational and experimental labs will be performed:
Pipe flow analysis using CFD simulations
3D flow around a rectangular block

Lift and drag force on an aerofoil

Pressure distribution on a circular cylinder
For the final exam, 25% of marks will be based on questions from previous four quizzes. The final
exam is a closed book test and only one double-sided 8.5 x 11 inch formula sheet is allowed during the
exam.

Course Content: This course will involve a combination of lectures, experimental and computational
labs and directed self-study. Approximately one-third of the course will be devoted to each of: theoretical
background and results for bluff body flows, flow measurements techniques and experimental results,
computational techniques.
Lecture topics will include:
Review of important Fluid Mechanics concepts
Historical background, theoretical results, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations
Boundary layers, mixing/shear layers, separation, wakes, vorticity generation, turbulence
Flow past a cylinder, sphere, rectangular block, other bluff bodies
Flow over and normal to a flat plate, ground proximity effects
Ground vehicle aerodynamics, Ahmed body, drag on road vehicles, relationship between drag and
performance
Measurement techniques, hot-wire, LDA, LDV, PIV
Introduction to CFD, mesh generation, finite-volume formulations, turbulence modeling, applications
to road vehicle aerodynamics, introduction to commercial CFD software.

Cheating: The University of Windsor subscribes to the strictest interpretation of academic integrity. Faculty
members and students bear joint responsibility in assuring that cheating on assignments or any examination is
not tolerated. Students who engage in academic dishonesty will be subject to disciplinary action under Senate
Bylaw 31: Student Affairs and Integrity. All incidences of cheating will be reported. Allowing and/or aiding
another student to copy from your paper are also considered cheating.

Copyright on Lectures: Students can tape lectures provided that the recording is for their own personal
use. The right to record does not extend beyond the students use for personal study. For any other use,
students must obtain the permission of the professor in question. If a student shares or disseminates a recorded
lecture in any way, thereby breaching copyright legislation, s/he will be subject to University misconduct
policies, at minimum.

Calculators, etc.: No cell phones, ipods or other electronic devices will be allowed in the tests or final
examination.

Exam Conflicts due to Observance of Religious Holidays : Students who are unable to write the
final exam during the regularly scheduled time slot because of a conflict with religious conviction must apply
for an alternative exam by the end of the normal add/drop period of the semester. The Office of Registrar will
schedule the alternative exam in another slot within the regular examination period. Please download the
appropriate form from http://www.uwindsor.ca/registrar and submit to the Office of Registrar. Note: These
applications must be submitted by the end of the fourth week of classes.

Instructor Evaluation: Set forms will be distributed during the last two weeks of classes.
