Information Systems
A manufacturing company has networked its computers to those of its customers and suppliers to
capture data about sales orders and purchases. Such data are processed immediately, and
inventory and other databases are updated. Videoconferencing and electronic mail services are
also provided. Data generated from the manufacturing plant are captured by sensors and
processed by a computer that also suggests answers to a complex production problem posed
by an engineer. Managerial end users receive reports on a periodic, exception, and demand
basis, and use computers to interactively assess the possible results of alternative decisions.
Finally, top management can access text summaries and graphics displays that identify key
elements of organization performance and compare them to industry and competitor
performance.
The company has started forming business alliances and using IS to build a global
telecommunications network with other companies throughout the world to offer their customers
worldwide products and services. The company is in the midst of making fundamental changes
to their computer-based systems to increase the efficiency of their business operations and their
managers' ability to react quickly to changing business conditions.
Question
There are many different types of information systems in the above mini-case. What are they?
What strategic objectives are achieved here? Identify and describe as many as you can.

In the above case, an integration of TPS, OAS, KWS, MIS, and DSS are being used.
In order to keep track of the daily routine sales, orders, and purchases being conducted
the Transaction Processing System is require to provide well structured, credible data for further
analysis on the Operational Level allowing the data to be frequently updated.
The above case study specifically states "Video Conferencing, and E-Mail" services
required by the system, thus the Office Automation System will provide the manufacturing
company with the required tools needed to improve productivity of data workers in the office.
Knowledge Work Systems aids in providing the engineers with the knowledge needed
using the information gathered by providing them with the designs and graphics required to
achieve their project tasks in the professional (knowledge) level.
Management Information Systems will provide summary reports to Top- Management
that may allow them to plan, control, and make decisions in a more credible and structured basis.
In order for the system to assess specific decisions on a periodic, demand, and
exceptional basis, the Decision Support System is required at the Management level to provide
them with the decision analysis needed at low volume data.
These Information System will provide the organization with Operational Excellence
allowing for a more efficient and effective system thus increasing profitability. Decision Making
will be made in a much more coherent and credible manner due to the quality of processing
being transmitted mainly due to the DSS and MIS. Moreover, the systems will allow for a greater
advantage over the competitors thus leading to a greater survival ratio.
To sum it all up, to make sure all required features are met for the organization to
succeed, these information systems must be provided to achieve maximum efficiency and
effectiveness using the information gathered by the organization in the operation to the strategic
level.
