( f + g )( x) = f ( x) + g ( x)
Entonces el segundo miembro de la ecuacin tiene sentido si tanto f (x) como g (x) estn
definidas; es decir, si x pertenece al dominio de f y tambin al de g . Si el dominio de f
es A y el de g es B , entonces el dominio de f + g es la interseccin de ambos, es decir,
A B.
De manera anloga podemos definir la diferencia f g y el producto fg , y sus dominios
tambin son A B . Pero al definir el cociente f / g , debemos recordar no dividir entre
cero.
Definicin de la suma, diferencia, producto y cociente de dos funciones.
Sean f y g dos funciones . Entonces las funciones f + g , f g , fg y f / g se define
como sigue:
Dom( f + g ) = Dom( f ) Dom( g )
( f + g )( x) = f ( x) + g ( x)
( f g )( x) = f ( x) g ( x)

COMPOSICIN DE FUNCIONES
Existe otra manera de combinar dos funciones para obtener una nueva funcin. Por
ejemplo, suponga que y = f (u ) = u y u = g ( x) = x 2 + 1 . Como y es una funcin de u y,
a su vez, u es una funcin de x , se concluye que, finalmente, y es unja funcin de x .
Calculamos esto por sustitucin:
y = f (u ) = f ( g ( x)) = f ( x 2 + 1) = x 2 + 1
El procedimiento se llama composicin porque la nueva funcin se compone de las dos
funciones dadas, f y g .
Definicin.
Dadas dos funciones f y g , la funcin compuesta f o g (tambin llamada la composicin
de f y g ) esta definida por
( f o g )( x) = f (g ( x) )
Ejemplo:
1. Sean las funciones f ( x) = 5 x 2 x 2 , x < 1;10 > y g ( x) = 2 3 x , x [1;5 > . Hallar
