heres an energy in the excavating and engineering. Education and healthcare facilities are cropping up or renovating. That is good news for the
community as it enables these providers to
expand services and programs.
EDUCATION
A drive down Route 55 near the Sherman Avenue exit
will have your head turning. Cumberland County
Technical Education Center (CCTEC), set to open its
new facility in September, has the community buzzing. At
over 200,000 square feet and a $70 million investment, Dr.
Dina Rossi Elliott, superintendent, says the school will
provide a vital and necessary link between education and
the local economya link that promises to build a stronger
foundation for economic success and shared prosperity
throughout our county.
Elliott says CCTEC students will have both a rigorous
core curriculum and programs of study with industry-recognized credentials. No longer will they need to return to
area high schools to obtain their core requirements.
Everything will be under one roof, both the academic and
the technical training. Plus, they will be able to avail

in Greenwich. A house once
owned by Nicholas Gibbon
remains a landmark to this day.
The work of Nicholas and his brother
Leonard helped shape the community in
its earliest decades and set the standards
that carried it through the postRevolution period. So it might seem surprising to learn that it was the consequence of a debt that brought the family
to the farthest reaches of western
Cumberland County.
The tale begins in the late 1600s with
Edmund Gibbon, a New York merchant
who laid claim to a debt owed him by
Edward and Thomas Duke. John Fenwick,
who was instrumental in planning the
town of Greenwich, had conveyed to the
Dukes land in his New Jersey settlement.
Gibbon was given 6,000 acres in the
colony to settle the debt.
According to NJ Archives, Vol. XXVI:
Newspaper Extracts 1768-1769, edited in
1904 by William Nelson, Gibbon, by
virtue of this deed, had a tract of 5,500
acres surveyed for him by Richard
Hancock, in 1862. It was resurveyed in
1703 by Benjamin Acton, and lay in
Cohansey Precinct, now in Greenwich and
Hopewell Townships, Cumberland
County, including Roadstown, extending
southward to Pine Mount Branch, and
westward to the Delaware. This tract was
handed down to Gibbons grandson who
later ceded it to another relative, Francis
Gibbon.
The NJ Archives reports that In 1700
Francis devised it to his two kinsmen,
Leonard and Nicholas Gibbon, of
Gravesend, in Kent, England, describing it
as all that tract of lands called Mount
Gibbon, upon the branches of unknown
creek, near the Cohansey in West Jersey,
provided they settled upon it.
Unlike the previous owners of the
tract, Leonard and Nicholas became
directly involved in the development of
Greenwich, along with its earliest residents who, it is reported, hailed largely
from New England and Ireland. They
built a gristmill, one of the first near the
Cohansey River and soon became significant contributors to the town. According
to the NJ Archives, the two brothers gave
six acres of land in Greenwich for a
Presbyterian Church, to be erected by
1729. They were Episcopalians them-

selves, and erected at their own expense

St. Stephens Church, in Greenwich, in
1729, and provided for regular services
there.
The brothers donations to establish
churches for both denominations was a
reflection of the religious freedom
endorsed by the Quakers who traveled to
the New World to escape persecution in
England. William McMahon, in his book
South Jersey Towns, explains that prior to
the Gibbons, Benjamin Baker, Quaker,
gave an acre of ground on which was
erected in 1705 the [original] Presbyterian
Church, to which were attracted wellknown preachers Charles Beatty, Samuel
Finley and Gilbert Tennent.
McMahon adds that it was common in
Greenwich for citizens of different
denominations to live near each other
without resentment. The first manor
tract was sold to Mark Reeve, an English
Quaker, on February 18, 1684, he writes.
we find Thomas Watson, a Baptist, buying property directly across the street
from Mark Reeve
Historical Collections of the State of
New Jersey by John Warner Barber also
confirms the peaceful coexistence among
the residents: The main street was then
made about 2 miles in length, and 100 feet
in width, and an Episcopal, a Presbyterian,
and a Friends meeting-house erected.
In 1730, the NJ Archives reports,
[the Gibbon brothers] divided their tract,
Nicholas taking the southern part, including the mill and 2,000 acres of land.
Leonard erected a stone house about two
miles north of Greenwich. Nicholas built a
substantial brick house in Greenwich,
which he occupied until about 1740, when
he removed to Salem.
Nicholas was engaged in the mercantile
business and maintained a store in
Greenwich. He partnered in this endeavor
with Samuel Fenwick Hedge and the NewYork-based Capt. James Gould. He would
eventually open a store in Salem. When, in
1731, Hedge died, Nicholas married his
partners widow, Anna Grant Hedge. They
had five children.
After moving in 1740, he served Salem
County as sheriff from 1741 to 1748, as
county clerk and as a Commissioner of the
Loan Office. He died February 26, 1758, at
the age of 55. I

Motorsports Park Introduces Art Bar

Just a few days after the Blizzard of 2016, the Finish Line Pub at NJMP was
full of snowmen. Not the cold and icy sort but a whimsical depiction on canvas of
snowman praising the blessings of Mother Nature. NJMPs first Art Bar brought
40 attendees who were treated to a night of art instruction, sipping wine and a buffet put together by NJMP's executive chef.
The instructor for the class is Lori Lewis, NJMP's communications, media and
HR manager. Lori has a strong art background and when the idea of the Art Bar
came up, she quickly volunteered to take on the task. Her love for art began at an
early age in her hometown of Newport a few miles south of NJMP close to the
Delaware Bay. Being a small community there was not a lot for the youth to do,
said Lewis, but one thing we did have were two local artists with studios that gave
lessons to the local kids.
Lewis said they knew they were onto something when after only the first few
days of setting up the event they were almost to their maximum number. We are
able to accommodate a larger group than most since we have a large room and
two other instructors that help out with instruction. We make our projects easy for
the students to follow and even create an illustrated guide to give them step-bystep instructions on the process, said Lewis.
Art Bar will be held each month in 2016 with the next one scheduled for
Wednesday, February 24, from 6 to 9 p.m. At this class the students will create a
16x18 rustic wooden sign with a sunflower welcoming spring. The students will
have the option of stenciling their initial onto the sign. There is a Facebook event
page set up on the main New Jersey Motorsports page where you can join the
class, or call Lori at 856-327-7209 to reserve your spot.

GAROPPOS FEED & PET SUPPLIES is a

retail store with a full range of pet and livestock food, treats, bedding, brushes, cleaning
products and other farm supplies. Pat
Garoppo, who founded the Garoppo Stone &
Garden Center in 1973, decided to venture
into the feed industry by starting Garoppos
Feed & Pet Supplies in 2000. With just six
employees at the outset, the business now
employs sixteen.
In 2005, Garoppos built a large warehouse
facility that enabled them to stock much larger volumes of feed and cater to their growing
number of livestock customers. In 2010, they
expanded their retail floor space significantly
by converting the impeccably clean warehouse into store space. With another brand
new warehouse built behind it, they hosted a
grand re-opening sale that April.
In 2012, they decided to branch further
into the gardening market by stocking a beautiful selection of annual and perennial flowers
during the spring and summer months, as well
as Bonnie vegetable and herb plants.
Garoppos is still owned and operated by
its founder, Pat Garoppo and his wife, Judy.
Although we arent all related, we like to think
of ourselves as family members and our customers agree that the atmosphere is that of
closely knit family-run operation.
They are always on the lookout for new,
innovative products at trade shows and they
take customer requests seriously. If there is a
specific product that someone is after, which
they currently do not stock, they do our best to
find it through their distributors and get it in
as quickly as possible. Another way they like to
invest in their business is through an increasing selection of events that we host, including
a Horse Owners Workshop, Chicken Chat,
Customer Appreciation Sale, and Wild Bird
Seminar, just to name a few. These events
allow them to reach out to a broader audience,
who may not have been to the store before,
and give their current customers a chance to

gain more information, meet new people, and

take advantage of great specials.
Garoppos looks forward to increasing
their sales and reaching out to new customers
in 2016, while continuing to offer current customers outstanding service with a smile. They
hope to host even more public events, such as
sales and seminars, than they did last year.
They are excited to bring even more products
in that will suit customers needs, from gift
items to farm supplies, and a full range of
feed, treats, and bedding for all creatures, big
and small.
PAMPERED PUP had an amazing 2015 that
ended on a high note, setting it up for a
spectacular 2016. It changed its business
model to specialize in boarding, grooming
and training. In 2015 Pampered Pup was
able to attend a wide variety of events to
meet the community. In addition to participating in and sponsoring Chamber of
Commerce events, Pampered Pup participated in Paws for Art at Wheaton Village as
well as Vinelands Night Out. TLC Animal
Rescue also partnered with Pampered Pup
and B&B Animal Services to promote
Barktoberfest, a fun-filled day for the
whole family to enjoy at Pampered Pup.
There was pumpkin painting, pony rides as
well as a very popular costume contest. To
celebrate the Christmas season, Santa came
to Pampered Pup in December to take pet
photos and to showcase some of TLC
Animal Rescues adoptable dogs. The proceeds from these events went directly to
TLC Animal Rescue to help dogs in need
find their forever homes. Pampered Pup
officially became a foster for TLC as well
and will continue to do so in 2016.
Pampered Pup is looking ahead to 2016
with energy and optimism. Daycare began
in January for dogs who want to spend the
day playing with their furry friends and the
experienced daycare staff. Daycare is a

great way for dogs to have a fun-filled day

and to go home a happy dog ready to cuddle up and relax. Sessions are Monday
through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The purpose of daycare is socialization, exercise,
anxiety reduction and peace of mind for
pet parents. Dogs are naturally social animals. Daycare provides appropriate dog-todog interaction in a controlled, well-managed and supervised manner. Pet parents
can enjoy their day and fulfill their obligations knowing that their dog is in a positive,
loving environment having fun rather than
sitting idle at home.
Pampered Pup is also thrilled to
announce that Amy Holland has joined
Season Reeves and the Pampered Pup team
as a pet stylist. Grooming will now be
offered seven days a week. They have added
some services that include blueberry facials,
strawberry milk baths, paw treatments and
a new teeth-cleaning process that enhances
the results. Creative grooming will still be
offered, including nail designs, hair coloring, feather extensions, mohawks and more.
In addition, birthday parties are now being
offered for canine friends. Their furry
friend Violet just celebrated her birthday
with Pampered Pup and her furry brothers.
It was a fun afternoon and the cake was
enjoyed by everyone.
Training classes continue to grow with
Jamie Castano and his staff from B&B
Animal Services. Jamie offers puppy and
beginner obedience classes as well as
advanced sessions. Pet sitting is being
added as well. In addition to the luxury
suites offered at Pampered Pup, in home
pet sitting is an option for those pets who
may be more comfortable in their own
home or simply need to be walked while
their owner is away or at work. Pampered
Pup Luxury Pet Resort has undergone
quite the transformation and is looking forward to a bright future.

The Woman's Club of Vineland,

amember of the General Federation of
Women's Clubs welcomed speaker
Meghan Wren from the Bayshore Center
at Bivalve on January 11 at their business meeting. Meghan swam across the
Delaware River in August 2013 to bring
attention to the bayshore area. She
reported that Bivalve and oysters were a
big industry for Cumberland County
and 80 to 100 boxcars full of oysters
would be shipped out of Bivalve daily
until the mid 1950s. Today the Bayshore
Center is where one would go to learn
about the 4,000 acres of wetlandsand
the breading grounds for birds and

East Vineland. The popular tavern was
destroyed by a fire on May 5, 2014 and
owner Rob Buono pledged to rebuild the
Double Eagle immediately in the aftermath of the blaze. Buono and his wife
Holly are partnering with Jessie and
Karen Morvay to reopen the Double Eagle
Saloon, building on the successes of the
food and beverage operation, but not
without a few changes.
Upon entering the Double Eagle,
patrons will notice a new layout with a
larger bar and slightly different flow to the
building. Buono says that this new floorplan is a more efficient setup from the
inside out. The outdoor deck is now completely covered and there is a pass-through
window from the bar to the outdoor area
to allow for better food service in warmer
months. The Double Eagle also is now 100percent handicapped accessible.
For fans of the Double Eagle Saloons
menu, Buono says that all the favorites are
back with a few twists. For example, there
are more options on the portion of the
menu dedicated to loaded fries. Same goes
for the expanded wing offerings. The staples of the menubarbeque brisket, burgers, cheesesteaks and pulled porkhave
returned to play the starring roles.

f theres any doubt that Americans

want to have the option of eating
breakfast at any time of night or day,
just look to the recent success McDonalds
has had. Since offering extended breakfast
hours in October, the fast-food chains
sales have grown and all of its competitors
are jumping on the bandwagon.
Here in Vineland, John and Annette
Scipione hope to capitalize on the trend
by building an IHOP (International
House of Pancakes) into the footprint of
the Ramada of Vineland. IHOP has
always served breakfast all day, and if all
goes according to plan, you can order
yourself some Rooty Tooty Fresh N
Fruity Pancakes for dinner by April 1.
The space that formerly housed the coffee
shop and burger bar in the West Landis
Avenue hotel is currently being retrofitted, while the Dakota Prime Steakhouse
and Sushi Bar will not be affected by the
construction and will remain open during
and after the conversion of the southwest
corner of the property into an IHOP.

eafood lovers are in for a treat now

that Captn Chuckys Crab Cake Co.
has opened at the Greater Bridgeton
Amish Market. Many residents of
Cumberland County and neighboring
towns make regular visits to the Amish
Market located just off Shiloh Pike (Rt.
49) as it is. After the Amish packed up
their wares and left the Landis
MarketPlace in Vineland, the Bridgeton
market is the only place nearby to get a
taste of Amish meats, produce, and baked
goods. Now theres one more very good
reason to take the drive down Route 49.
Owners Wayne and Elaine Jones set up
shop inside the Greater Bridgeton Amish
Market last month and the early reviews
have been quite favorable. As the name
suggests, Captn Chuckys Crab Cake Co.
specializes in jumbo lump crab mounds of
goodnessno filler here. But the menu
includes more of the bounty of the sea
than those delicious crab cakes. Shrimp
trays, soups and chowders, and more than
a half-dozen appetizers round out a menu
full of options intended for easy, takehome, heat-and-serve convenience.

he millennials have spoken and

Steve Wozniak is listening. The
millennial generation (those born
between the early 80s and the late 90s) is
being courted and downtown officials and
merchants are pinning their hopes on a
wave of millennials fueling the rebirth of
Vinelands Landis Avenue. Recent surveys
indicate that this desirable demographic
group is thirsty for craft beer. Wozniak
hopes to satisfy that urge for barrel-aged
beer, brewed with care in small batches by
the start of the summer of 2016.
Wozniak is getting ready to modify the
former Martinis Shoe Store at 613A East
Landis Avenue into a microbrewery.

Wozniak plans to build in the space where
customers were fitted for footwear for
decades before Frank and Lynn Martini
retired and closed the shoe store a couple
of years ago.
He will call his establishment the

larger brewery in Maryland will pay off.

f those lovers of craft beers cant wait

until summer, they dont have to travel
very far to get their fix of those sudsy
beverages made from hops and malted
barley. Not one, but two microbreweries
opened up in Hammonton in the past two
months. The first is called Tomfoolery
Brewing Co. and they are located on
North Washington Street in what used to
beappropriately enougha bottling
plant for a beer company.
Owner Shawn Grigus knows a thing or
two about brewing; He used to run the
Tap It Homebrew Supply store in Egg
Harbor City. He and his wife, Gayle
DAbate, opened Tomfoolery in early
December. It didnt take long for the competition to set up shop. Right around the
corner.
Dave Tomasello is the proud new
owner of Hammontons second microbrewery, the Three 3s Brewing Co.,
which opened less than a month ago.
Located at 50 13th Street (on the corner of
13th and Washington) in Hammonton, the
Three 3s is open Thursday evenings
through Sunday afternoons.
State law prohibits microbreweries like
Tomfoolery, Three 3s or Millvilles
Glasstown Brewing Company from serving food, but feel free to bring your own
grub. You can take tours, sample beers in
the tasting rooms and take home growlers
of your favorite brews.
Enjoy all of the new food and beverage
options coming to your palate soon. I

Vineland, thanks in some measure to Patrick

Fiorilli, the towns former mayor (1976-1984).
Fiorilli set out to boost the fortunes of this
heavily agricultural South Jersey town with
what must have seemed to be a fools mission
linking his citys good name with the scourge of
the American lawn. The edible weed took off,
and local farmers were happy to supply them.
In 1988, the Chicago Tribune sent a
reporter to Vineland to find out why chefs
and foodies were getting the munchies for
the weed. He interviewed Fiorilli.
Everybody else is trying to get rid of dandelions, Fiorilli joked, here, were growing
them on purpose. In your yard, you go out
and pull the dandelions out of the grass. Our
farmers pull the grass out of the dandelions.
Peter A. Gail, author of The Dandelion
Celebration: A Guide to Unexpected Cuisine,
agrees.
Most Americans think of it as a vile pernicious weed, says Gail, professor of economic
botany at Cleveland State University. It's a
super vegetable. Whats more, its nutrient
qualities read almost like a One-a-Day Vitamin.
Ounce for ounce, dandelion greens have
50 percent more vitamin C than tomatoes,
twice the protein of eggplant, double the fiber
of asparagus, just as much iron as spinach
and even more potassium than bananas.
The annual Dandelion Dinner began in
1973 as a way to celebrate Vinelands agricultural heritage and has contributed to international recognition of the city as the
Dandelion Capital of the World.
The addition of the craft-brew component to the dinner in 2009 reinvigorated the
event and helps to draw 400 to 450 guests to
the Dandelion and Beer Tasting every year.
The dandelion is featured in all of the
dishes. Several returning dishes such as the
dandelion salad, dandelion and meat-stuffed
ravioli, and dandelion and beer-battered cod,
according to Tom Merighi, Jr., owner of the
Savoy Inn.
A portion of the proceeds from the annual
event benefits the Luigi A. Tramontana Sr.
Memorial Scholarship, which is given to a
student studying agriculture or business.
Capital Bank of New Jersey is the event
sponsor. Music, lighting and photo booth will
be provided by Bob Morgan Entertainment.
Im looking forward to it, its such a
blast, Morgan said. I wish I could be a
guest. We can take a break and eat, but then
its time to get the party going. I do like the
dandelion raviolis. I

themselves of the workforce partners that
exist at the schools central location including the new Cumberland County Workforce
and Economic Development Center and
Cumberland County College, an organizational combo dubbed the Economic
Development Triangle. Some of the workforce and college-ready programs offered at
CCTEC include Law Enforcement and
Homeland Security, Allied Health,
Construction Trades, Engineering,
Information Technology and Graphic Design.
The new school is exceptionally popular
with more than 500 eligible 8th-grade applicants for the 225 slots available. School officials, under the direction of the Cumberland
County Board of Vocational Education, will
now work to complete the Boards criteria in
selecting CCTECs first freshmen class.
The building of a new middle school for
grades 6 through 8 on South Lincoln Avenue
is big news for Vineland Public Schools.
Wayne Weaver, executive director of facilities, says, Monday we just received a notice
of award from the state to Ernest Bock &
Sons for $36,885,000. The building is similar
in size to Wallace [Middle School]just shy
of 100,000 square feet. We are planning an
August 12th groundbreaking; the school will
be opened up in September 2018.
The school has a capacity of 620 stu-

dents. Were going to do a full redistributing, starting with the middle school level,
Weaver says. What he knows already is that
Rossi will revert back to an elementary
school. It was built in 1970, but somewhere
along the line turned into a middle school.
The overcrowding is at the elementary level.
There is a high student-to-teacher ratio; this
will alleviate that problem.
The district opted for a single level construction on the 40-acre parcel. Weaver says
the school will have state-of-the-art technology, which has to be retrofitted into other
schools.
Vinelands new initiatives include offering
a Seal of Bi-literacy. Gia Messore, public
information officer for the district, says
Vineland was one of seven pilot districts.
We are one of the groups that pushed to have
it made into a law. New Jersey last month
passed a law that recognizes a student's proficiency in more than one language.
Students need to pass a state-mandated
proficiency test, and will get a special certificate from the state and another certificate
from the district, Messore says. It is to
encourage students to learn other languages
and cultures. It will help in the workforce,
they can put it on their resume or college
application.
Messore says to stay tuned for a
Cumberland County Positive Youth
Development Coalition and Rutgers
University contest for high school students
to create a public service announcement on

gun safety and violence awareness. Teams

will be sponsored by a teacher or faculty
member for approving script; the winners
will have a choice from a variety of prizes.
The video will be aired on SNJ Today.
This school year marked a move for the
Compass Academy Charter School to 23
West Chestnut Avenue, a move that will
enable them to have the capacity to offer 5th
grade next year and educate 190 students.
Jane Berger, school counselor and instructional facilitator, shares some school history:
We began in 2013. We started with
Kindergarten through 2nd grade. We have
two classes per grade, 19 in each grade. The
school is now K4. Its the old St. Francis
School. In addition to the classrooms, they
have a tech lab, a full gymnasium, a stage,
conference rooms, a nurses suite, and a
counselors office. We have an outside chef.
Nothing is prepackaged, Berger says.
Principal Susan Little emphasizes that
charter schools are a free public school,
open and available. Charter schools follow
the same core standards with state-approved
curriculum. But we have the ability to cap
class size. That is a major plus. We get to
tweak our day. Little says the school uses
personal learning approaches, by our teachers understanding how children learn and
by incorporating such activities as service
learning projects. The school has both a
community and family-connected focus.
We want to make sure our children are
growing and thriving, creating independent

HEALTHCARE
Inspira Health Network opened the
Urgent Care Center on West Landis Avenue
in November and has already more than
doubled expectations, says Clare SapienzaEck, vice president of business development
and physician recruitment. Whats important about urgent care is that its retail-oriented, she says. It is located in retail corridors so that it is easily accessible. What distinguishes us from other urgent care facilities is that we staff with doctors. We also
share data much more easily with your primary care physician.
Inspira is also soon opening a new primary care office in Buena at the site of the
former Buena Tavern. The office will use
2,000 square feet. The space is 5,000 square
feet, says Sapienza-Eck. Some other things
are in the works. That is a retail corner of
our county with a lot of traffic.
A simulation lab is being added to the
residency center on the first floor of the hospital. It is a building where you can move
walls and simulate a working environment,
she says. Robotic dolls, a technological leap

complications. You can give the patient certain chronic conditions, say a diabetic who is
now having a heart attack. Residents will
have to figure out and respond to patients in
distress. Its very exciting, very expensive
technology, Sapienza-Eck says.
Inspira boasts one of the fastest growing
residency programs in the area as well. We
have 145 residents. Thats going to grow until
every slot is full in the 155 range, she says.
Dr. Andro Zangaladze recently joined
Inspira as the Medical Director of
Neursoscience. Recruiting specialty doctors,
Sapienza-Eck says, is not as hard as it used
to be now that we have great sites. Often,
people leave the community to get this care.
Now it is available here.
Whats new for CompleteCare is the
Vineland Health Campus, the Gwendolyn E.

Gould Center for Community Healthcare, a

flagship facility with 19,619 square feet, says
Curtis Edwards, president and CEO. Its
built and ready for service. The official ribbon cutting at the West Sherman Avenue
facility will be on February 19 from 6 to 8
p.m. Well have tours, wine and cheese. It is
a chance for anyone whod like to learn more
and to see the new facility, Edwards says.
He explained the dedication to Gould in
the facilitys name: She has been involved
in our organization for over 30 years. Our
facilities have grown from four to 21 during
her leadership period.
Edwards was excited to rattle off the
details of the new facility, their largest and
the first where they have had everything
under one roof. It has 27 exam rooms: nine
are dedicated to pediatric and family care;
nine for adults; three for specialty care; and
six for womens health. They have 10 dental
operatories, two phlebotomy labs, a patient
counseling room, a multipurpose room, and
a bistro coffee/snack area for patients.
Starting in April, they will also have an
onsite patient pharmacy.
We want to be as warm and inviting as
we possibly can, says Edwards. It also has
the latest technology, including a kiosk
where patients can register. It provides
more capacity for our patients. It is not an
urgent care center but we do accept walkins. CompleteCare is for everyone. Its for
patients of all ages, all forms of insurance
are accepted. We go by a sliding-fee scale.

Everyone has some type of responsibility;

we never turn anyone away because they
cant pay. We have later hours and will be
open on weekends, says Edwards.
The facility is expected to service 12,000
patients, up to 75,000 visits per year.
CompleteCare is a system of health centers that
serves 60,000 people a year in Cumberland,
Gloucester and Cape May counties. I

ANTONS FLORIST is a retail florist specializing in wedding and funeral designs as
well as unique and creative everyday
arrangements. In 2009, the business was
passed along to present owner and 38-year
employee Bob Zadra. The florist currently
employs 12 people. Over the years, the number of weddings has grown from several per
year to slightly over 100 in 2015. Daily
orders have increased greatly and Antons
has become the areas go-to funeral florist.
Their delivery area now includes parts of
four counties.
The business participates in several wedding shows a year and just had a very successful show at the Eastlyn Golf Course.
Antons was awarded the best exhibit of all
the vendors there.
In 2016, Antons hopes to increase sales
and let customers know they get better value

a large fee just to call Antons to make up the
order. Antons invites customers to call and

CORRECTION: In the Business Outlook
2016 cover story in last weeks issue
(February 3, 2016), the history of
Antons Florist, located in Vineland, was
incorrectly described as having been
founded as Grassos Florist. Although
Antons does date to the early 1950s, it
was founded as Gateway Florist, not
Grassos, according to George Grasso,
son of the late owners of the Gateway
Kay and Fred Grasso. Also, George
Grasso remembers helping his father
build a full-service greenhouse at the
original florist in the early 1950s (which
is no longer there), and his mother was
a certified full-floral designer who ran
one of the biggest year-round florists in
the area at the time. Providing flowers
of all types to dozens of area weddings
per month, as well as funerals and for
other occasions, the Gateway did a lot
more than sell gladiolas in the summer
to shore travelers, as was stated in last
weeks article. The Gateway was sold
about a decade after opening and then
became Alvinos Florist before being
renamed Antons.

the latest trends in the flower industry. They
are currently updating the gift shop to give it
more of a boutique shopping aura. The own-

ers are constantly on the lookout for unique

items to sell. They and staff are always
researching the latest in floral and gift trends.
Colonial Flowers is excited about being part
of the growing Arts District in Millville.
DONDERO DIAMONDS AND FINE JEWELRY
is a full-service retail jewelry store that was
founded by Charles Dondero in 1948. At its
inception there was one employee.
Donderos is now blessed to be in their third
generation of family ownership. After the
passing of Charles in 1959, his son F.C Bud
Dondero purchased the business from the
estate and moved the location to the basement of his house on Arbor Avenue in North
Vineland. It was there, with Buds wife Betty
working at his side, that the jewelry business
became part of the fabric of this community
for the next 20 years, setting down a solid
foundation for future success.
In 1979, Ken purchased the business from
his dad. In 1984, Bud and Bettys daughter,
Mary (Dondero) Jablonski, joined the firm and
continues to lead the sales division. In 1988,
Ken sold part of his ownership stake to his
brother-in-law and close friend Kevin Kleiner
who had been working in the business since
1983. This partnership set the stage for expansion that would take place a few years later.
As business flourished at the Arbor Avenue
location, the need for a new and larger facility
became critical. It was in 1990 that the business moved to its current location at 2439 N.
Delsea Drive. Several expansions and renova-

tions later, Donderos continues to serve the

jewelry buying and repairing needs of their
community. The company currently employs
14 dedicated full -and part-time associates
who hold fast to the mission of service set
down 68 years ago by their founder.
The year 2015 saw the purchase and
installation of an arc welder in the jewelry
repair shop, allowing for increased capability in repair and custom design as well as
improved turnaround on traditional work.
This facility already allows them to perform
on site service for customers that is
unmatched in the industry. Their extreme
dedication to customers, along with industry
leading jewelry lines, such as Pandora,
Simon G., Movado and Elle, allow Donderos
to keep pace with the changing fashion
needs and desires within their market.
Donderos was happy to see some of the
national economic recovery start to find its
way into Cumberland County in 2015. The
business will continue progressive inroads
into electronic and social marketing media to
maintain contact with their customer base as
well as attracting new customers. Along with
partnering with their liquidation and brokerage arm, Benchmark Gem Brokers, they are
optimistic about the economic future of the
business. They are excited for the part their
businessas well as other independent business in the community will play in the economic expansion that lies ahead.

ed at 212 Catawba Ave., Newfield, is an elementary school for children in PK2 through
8th grade. Along with Principal Dr. Mary
Alimenti, employees total 58. The school was
founded in 2012. Last year, in keeping with
their Middle States Goals and Five-Year Plan,
Edgarton completed the installation of
SMART Boards in all classrooms; purchased
85 Chromebooks and three storage carts;
implemented Google Apps for Education;
purchased tablets for all 5 PK classes; updated their Internet infrastructure; implemented
their on-line grade-book and student database system; and purchased new science
books for grades 1 through 8.
Edgartons outlook for 2016: For the
2015-16 school year, they are continuing to
develop their technology program. They
purchased additional Chromebooks, bringing the total to 205, enabling the school to
have a Chromebook available for each child
in grades K through 8. They also instituted
the 1:1 Technology Initiative where each student in grades 5 through 8 is issued a personal Chromebook to use for school and
homework. The staff has participated in
over 20 hours of professional development
to assist with implementing technology into
their instructional programs. Additionally,
changes have been made to the Advance
Math program. Seventh grade students are
being taught Algebra 1. Geometry will be
taught in 8th grade. For lower school students, they have fully implemented a guided
reading program using leveled readers and
frequent reading assessments. They have
also hired a reading specialist who is certified in Orton-Gillingham and is trained in
Wilson reading programs to provide assistance for children who need it.
Further planning includes developing
new instructional goals with a Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)
focus. Working toward that goal they are
currently associated with a nationally competitive rocketry club (TARC) for the upper
school and are sponsoring weekly after
school science clubs for the lower school.
Future instructional planning includes
developing an integrated curriculum where

STEM is threaded throughout the entire

academic program at all grade levels.
EYE ASSOCIATES (EA) is a Medical and
Surgical Ophthalmology practice, founded in
January 1999, providing the diagnoses and
treatment of all types of visual problems in
patients of all ages. Beyond primary care, Eye
Associates offers the latest in DROPLESS
cataract surgery, cosmetic surgery and treatments, laser, glaucoma and diabetes treatment,
retinal services, neuro-ophthalmology, low
vision exams, second opinions and annual
exams. Optical shops in each location for your
convenience. They also offer the BLADELESS
Custom Laser Vision Correction (LASIK) to
correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and
astigmatism at their state-of-the-art Laser
Vision Center located right here in Vineland.
EA has their own surgical center called
SurgiCenter of Vineland where they perform
most of their surgical procedures. Employees
number 95 including 12 physicians.
2015 review:
EA experienced
another increase
of 15 percent
growth in DROPLESS Cataract
Surgery. They
feel the reason
for this growth is
due to the benefits of this new
Dr. Sydney Tyson
procedure; no
mess, no costly drops before or after surgery,
no trips to the drugstore. DROPLESS
Cataract patients just leave it all up to our
surgeons to place the drops at the time of
surgery. Dr. Tyson gave National lectures
with physicians from all over the U.S. as well
as worldwide at the American Academy of
Ophthalmology. He as been asked to teach
other physicians how to provide DROPLESS Cataract Surgery to their patients. EA
increased their new patients growth again
this year by 23 percent. Average growth is 20
percent.
2016 outlook: EA is implementing more
patient access to their patient portal with
their electronic medical records system and
presenting a whole new package to their
patients, including patient communication
and education. Dr. Tyson will be participat-

year. This again is a glaucoma device that
will help lower the intraocular pressure in
glaucomatous eyes. The reason for Dr.
Tysons focus on glaucoma is due to its dangerous ultimate threat of blindness.
However, with these devices the threat is
lessened greatly. EA will continue on with
their community services. They will participate in lectures and health fairs in the community promoting eye health and safety.
They will also continue to give back to the
community with volunteerism and contributions as they have since 1999.
More lectures are in store for Dr. Tyson.
He will also be providing a series of Webinars
in the evening when surgeons will have more
time to participate. As always, Eye Associates
will continue providing the latest in technology and services for all eye care needs.
HAIR WITH FLAIR is a Paul Mitchell Focus
Salon. The business was started in 2005 by
owner Carol Frey. At that time, she
employed four people, a number that has
grown to seven. The salon just relocated
after 10 years and has maintained a strong
customer loyalty along with steady growth.
The new location in Larrys II Plaza
includes state-of-the-art stations and equipment. The outlook for 2016 and beyond is
very prosperous, says Frey.

LA MALE FINE MENS CLOTHING & FORMAL WEAR was started by Larry Leonelli in
Absecon in 1984, when the economy was
strong. He had begun his career 10 years earlier at a mens clothing store in the region. In
1994, he moved his store to Vineland and
renamed it. After five years in the ShopRite
shopping center at Lincoln and Landis, he
moved to the back corner of LaSalle and Karin
streets. In 2015, LA Male relocated to its present location at 1164 E. Landis Ave.
With the move, Leonelli increased the size
and scope of products and services offered,
including a larger boys department and an
expanded formal wear section. He also plans
to partner with other businesses to offer wedding services. The new location includes a tailoring department to handle the large increase
in alterations for both men and women. The
new store provides an additional 1,000 square
feet of floor space, a new interior look, and
new signage and landscaping outside.
The store is also a Speedo swimwear
provider for local schools and swim clubs,
and its new location across from the YMCA
may increase visibility and sales.

JOHNSONS TRUCK is a full-service truck

and auto repair facility specializing in diesel
medium to heavy duty trucks. The business
was opened in 2010 by owners Jimmy and
Theresa Johnson. At that time, Jimmy was the
technician and Theresa did all clerical and
customer service. Today, the staff has grown
to seven, including daughter Jessica as service
advisor and son Anthony is training to become
a general service mechanic. The business has
outgrown the original shop in Folsom and
relocated to Harding Highway in October
2013. Also, the business now specializes in
diesel and RV repair as well as automobiles.
At Johnsons, educating and informing is
a huge part of what they provide to the customer. Adaptations include upgrading the
shop to paperless and wireless programs.
Customers receive clear and detailed estimates, invoices and courtesy checks via their
e-mail, cell phone or print. These include

pricing, detailed description of work and

photos showing any issues or concerns that
are noticed.
They added a 46-inch monitor to the
waiting area so they can go over vehicle recommendations and repairs with customers.
A major turning point occurred in 2013 when
they moved from a small three-bay shop to
their large six-bay shop and hired three more
people. We are smart enough to know that
we dont know enough, says Johnson. We
are proud alumni member of ATI and with
their guidance we have been able to run our
shop efficiently, have first crack at the latest
technology for our industry and be accountable to providing excellent customer service
at a fair price.
The economy appears to slowly be turning around. With the loss of full motor vehicle inspections, vehicle services seem to be
on the backburner for a lot of people, which
has increased the amount of repairs we see.
We hope to see it turn around to more services and less high-cost repairs, with the
economy starting to look up.

Mainieros was founded in 1908 by Biagio
Mainiero, originally a barber, during a time
of early growth in the Vineland area. It has
been a family-owned and -operated business
for four generations and this has been an
important part of the its success story.
Keeping a finger on the pulse of daily activities and in personal contact with customers
keeps things running smoothly.
Today, the company employs a dozen
people. There have been several expansions
of the business, each one adding more products, display and warehouse space. The
present 13,000-square-foot store showcases

hundreds of appliances, TVs and vacuums

and stores tens of thousands of appliance
and vacuum parts.
Some things never change no matter how
long a business has been around. Like offering a mix of products and services that customers need. And being accessible, knowledgeable and responsive to any situation
that may occur. When you call Mainieros
somebody will always answer the phone!
From Mainieros humble barber shop
beginning there have been many changes.
Product additions began with razors, jewelry,
small electrical appliances when they became
available and, eventually, larger household
appliances and TVs. And with the increased
product offerings came several moves to larger stores and additional employees.
Imagine the changes a 105-year-old business has experienced. Biagio Mainiero traveled by horse and buggy to visit his customers
when he first started out and appliances were
deliverd by train direct from the factories to
Mainieros downtown Vineland Store. And
electrical appliances were cutting-edge products back then. Inventories and customer
payments were written on cards or logged in
books. All ordering and correspondence was
by mail or phone. And the downtown area
was the only place to shop in Vineland.
The major turning point for Mainieros
came about 50 years ago after moving to 201
Landis Avenue and then soon after expanding that store, quadupling its size. Last fall
Mainieros added a couple hundred more

square feet of appliance display area and

upgraded to new brighter lighting inside and
outside. And this year, as soon as the weather allows, the store will undergo a facade
and signage update that will increase their
presence and visibility on Delsea Drive.
The Mainiero family has lived, shopped
and done business in South Jersey for more
than 100 years. Many of their customers are
second- or third-generation shoppers who,
like their parents and friends, trust Mainieros
to help them make the right choices when
purchasing appliances, TVs, and vacuums, as
well as parts and service after the sale.
Customers are shopping for the best
deals more than ever. Mainieros will continue to search out the best values to help customers choose the best product for them at
the lowest possible price. After a better than
industry sales increase last year, Mainiero's
will continue to do what the big stores cant
do by providing outstanding product knowledge and personal service. And customers
can always get up-to-date information at
mainierosappliancesandtv.com.
MARCACCI MEATS is a full-service butcher shop that offers beef, pork, lamb, goat,

and operated business. The Marcacci family

ran the business for about 45 years. The
Silpagar family purchased the business 10
years ago, with 2016 marking the 10th year
anniversary. It is still owned and operated by
family members. Transitions from generation to generation has a lot to do with technology. As technology increases, business
has to change with it. So the younger generation helps a lot with that.
The customer base has greatly increased,
with some customers travelling about an hour
to purchase fresh meats. Customers stock up
for the month and keep returning with friends
and family. With the increase of customers,
sales have also increased steadily, every year.
Marcacci Meats is currently working on
their new, larger location for their store,
which should be ready to open this spring.
The new store is located at 1159 North Delsea
Dr., Vineland, NJ 08360. They will carry fresh
produce and full line of deli to make subs.
With the opening of a new location,
Marcacci is looking to keep serving their
current customers and invite news ones to
experience the difference when shopping at
Marcacci. They want everyone to have a
one-stop shop for their necessity food items.
They want to continue to serve South Jersey
and surrounding areas for many more years.

Rienzis has nine part-time employees.
The bridal salon has had many phases of
growth through the years. The first expansion
was in the early 1970s, which made the store
double the original store size with the rental
of the store behind the corner frontage. This
allowed Rienzis to offer bridal customers a
larger selection of designs. As the years progressed, they added more designers and
products. In 2013 they expanded the store to
double the existing store space. Expansion
and remodeling gave them the ability to offer
a beautiful experience for the bride and her
party while shopping. Many brides and customers want personalized service when
shopping for their special day and event.
Internet shopping does not offer all the services needed to go along with gown shopping,
fittings, and preparation for that special day.
Experience and service is priceless.
Rienzis is looking forward to 2016 having
an increase in weddings. Many reports show
this increase across the country. Their product lines for 2016 include many diverse
designs. Rienzis will show many of these
styles at upcoming fashion shows through
April. Fashion Show information is listed at
rienzibridalsalon.com. They will be hiring a
few part-time employees for the busy season.
SIR SPEEDY PRINTING is a print, sign,
and marketing company. The business was
started in 1980 by Orville and Ginger Chase.

The business has approximately six employees. The Chases hired Alison Trovarelli as
their customer service manager, and she
worked for them for 20 years. In 2014 the
business was purchased by Alisons aunt,
Ann Bauman and Alison is the Managing
Partner. Sir Speedy is expanding their product line with signs and banners with the
purchase of a 63-inch wide-format Latex
printer, so that they can furhter expand that
part of the business. The 2016 outlook: We
are changing our direction a bit. We are still
doing offset printing; [but] now we are more
into digital printing and heading into signs,
banners and marketing.
ST. MARY SCHOOL is a premier Catholic
elementary school that has been serving the
Cumberland, Atlantic and Gloucester County
communities for over 55 years. In September
1959, St. Mary School opened with kindergarten and first-grade classes. The school
grew each year by one classroom until 1968.
In 1963, the all-purpose cafeteria and hall
was added; in 1966, the South Wing was
added; in 1981 an 8th grade classroom and
science lab were added and, in 1995 a Music
Room and Pre-K room were added. In 2009 a
gym, cafeteria and stage was added and the
existing all-purpose cafeteria was renovated
into a Library/Media Center, an Art Room,
Music Room and Pre-K classrooms.
Fr. John Positano, OSA, Fr. Angelo
Allegrini, The Daughters of Mercy, The
Bertonazzi and Quinn families and many

other St. Mary Church parishioners worked

together to build this Catholic elementary
school in East Vineland.
St. Marys currently employs 50 and is
among a growing number of Catholic schools
that has added an Advancement Director
position, which focuses on enrollment and
development. The family approach, smart
planning, transparency and data management has allowed St. Mary School to grow
enrollment to 300 students and the development of mission-based fundraising has
allowed the school to raise over $650,000
through the Annual Fund and PTA functions
in the past four years. These funds have offset all student tuitions, funded the 1:1 Digital
Initiative, the purchase of iPads and laptops,
facility improvements and upgrades, professional development and provides tuition
assistance to families that qualify.
St. Mary School continues to evolve both
inside and outside the traditional classroom
programs that meet the needs of students.
Curriculum is regularly updated and the
school has taken the best of the Common
Core to develop Math and Language Arts
curriculums along with a new science curriculum based on Next Generation Science
Standards. Extra-curricular programs meet a
variety of interests and include a drama
department, choir, band, National Junior
Honor Society, Student Council, basketball,
volleyball, cross country; Homework,

TRI-CITY KITCHENS is located at 4019 S.
Main Road in Vineland, and was founded in
1971. In 2016, Tri-City Kitchens marks its
45th anniversary as it continues to be a leading kitchen and bathroom cabinet dealer in
the South Jersey and Philadelphia area. The
business saw an increase from 2015 of about
15 percent in year over year volume. As a
representative for one of the more respected
kitchen cabinet manufacturers in the country, Tri-City Kitchens was recognized for
over 25 years in partnership with Teddwood
Cabinetry in 2015. New relationships were
built within the Philadelphia and Jersey
Shore markets. Two additional employees
were added to the Tri-City staff in 2015.
2016 and Beyond: Tri-City Kitchen hopes
to expand its improved builders grade cabinet options. New relationships with overseas manufacturers and importers have
allowed Tri-City Kitchens to have the
newest trends in value-based kitchen cabinetry. This sector of the market is expected
to be a larger part of the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry business and Tri-City
Kitchens is positioning itself to be a major
part of this trend. New computer-assisted
renderings are being offered as part of the
design experience. Bringing interactive software directly to the consumers home has
been important in allowing the customer to
see the product before its delivered.
Tri-City Kitchens hopes to plan events
related to their 45th anniversary for growing
consumer and builder base.

YIS KARATE OF VINELAND offers traditional martial art instruction to strengthen
the body, mind, and spirit. The business was
started in 1982 by Master Dwayne Reed.
Business climate was good, there were not
many martial art schools and none in
Vineland that taught Tang Soo Do.
At that time, one instructor and a part
time administrator were employed. Todays
staff includes one chief instructor and three
part time instructors. Grandmaster Ki Yun
Yi is president of the International Martial
Arts Association, which oversees all IMA
schools.
Yis Karate has stayed the same in that
they teach the traditional martial art of Tang
Soo Do much the same way with the same
traditional values. They have more children
training now as parents have become aware
of the life-long benefits Tang Soo Do offers.
Adaptations include an emphasis on

Shroud of Turin Tour,
Discovering Jesus in His
Holy Shroud on Friday,
February 12, beginning at
7 p.m. in the Church of St.
Isidore the Farmer, 1655
Magnolia Road, Vineland.
The presenter, Donald

Nohs is also the Director General of the Confraternity of the Passion

Plan to arrive early; doors open at 6 p.m. on Friday, the first Friday of Lent.
