a) Derive the equation for steady state heat conduction through

cylinder of uniform conductivity without heat generation.

b) Calculate the rate of heat flow per m 2 through a furnace wall

consisting of 200 mm thick inner layer of chrome brick, a centre
layer of Kaoline brick 100 mm thick and an outer layer of masonry
brick 100 mm thick. The unit surface conductance at the inner
surface is 74 w/m 2 C and the outer surface temperature is 70C.
The temperature of the gases inside the furnace is 1670C what
temperature prevail at the inner and outer surfaces of the centre

layer ? Take, K chrome brick 1.25 w / mC, Kkaolin brick 0.074 w / mC

Kmansory brick 0.555 w / mC Assume steady heat flow.

c)

Explain significance of critical radius of insulation ? A pipe of outer

diameter is 20 mm is to be insulated with asbestos which has mean

thermal conductivity of 0.1w / mC . The convective heat transfer

The meat rolls of 25 mm diameter having K 1 w / mC are heated up

with the help of microwave heating for roasting. The centre
temperature of the rolls in maintained at 100C when the
surrounding temperature is 30C. The heat transfer coefficient on
the surface of the meat roll is 20 w / m20C. Find the microwave
heating capacity required in w / m3 .
b) Derive an expression for temperature distribution & heat
dissipation in fin insulated at tip of rectangular profile.

c)

A steel tube carries steam at a temperature of 320C. A thermometer

pocket of iron [K=52.3 W/mC] of inside diameter 15 mm & 1 mm
thick is used to measure the temperature. The error to be tolerated
is 1.5% of maximum. Estimate the length of the pocket necessary to
measure the temperature within this error. The diameter of steel
tube is 95 mm. Assume h 93 w / m20C and tube wall temperature is
120C. Suggest a suitable method of locating the thermometer
pocket.

b) A cylindrical body of 300 mm diameter and 1.6 m height is

maintained at a constant temperature of 36.5C. The surrounding
temperature is 13.5C. Find out the amount of heat to be

generated by the body per hour if 1.025kg / m3, Cp 0.96 kJ / kgC,

c)

Net radiation from the surfaces of two large plates maintained at

temperature of 73C & 23C is to be reduced by 105 times. Calculate
the number of radiation screens to be placed between them to
achieve this effect. Assume that the emissivity of screen S 0.05 &
that of surface 12 0.8 After this if one of the screen is removed
how many times will the net radiation be reduced ?
