MERGAL K14

Broad-Spectrum In-Can Presevative

EPA Registration No. 5383-104
DESCRIPTION
MERGAL K14 is a formulated isothiazolinone
(CMIT / MIT) in-can preservative that provides a
broad spectrum of activity against bacteria,
yeasts, fungi and molds. It is recommended for
waterborne adhesives, pigment and clay slurries,
starch solutions, sealants, latex paints and inks,
fountain solutions, polymer emulsions, rheology
modifiers and wax emulsions. The product is
fast acting and suited for systems with a pH of 3
up to approximately 8 or 9.
PERFORMANCE
This
product
demonstrates
improved
performance and enhanced activity over
conventional isothiazolinone bactericides. In
general, MERGAL K14 provides improved
speed of sanitation and greater resiliency against
repeat intrusions of micro-organisms. MERGAL
K14 is more stable in this difficult environment
and retains more sanitizing power where
conventional CMIT / MIT products suffer a
significant loss of activity. In certain markets and
applications, it is desirable to have low
Chlormethyl isothiazolinone levels (15 - 30
ppm). MERGAL K14 is an excellent choice for
these applications as the product is a synergistic
combination of preservatives (with only a portion
of its composition as CMIT).
APPLICATION
MERGAL K14 is a liquid product easily
incorporated into waterborne systems. For best
results, the products should be added as early in
the production process as possible. If high
temperatures or highly alkaline pH values are
expected during production, the products should
be added after these conditions are controlled.

USE LEVELS
MERGAL K14 @ 0.02 -0.35 %. Troy has a
broad range of in-can preservative products and
can assist you in your selection of a preservative.
Technical assistance is available from your Troy
representative and from the Troy Microbiological
Laboratory. The level required to protect any
particular system depends on a variety of factors:
initial level of microbiological contamination,
the components of the system, the likelihood of
exposure to repeat microbiological intrusions,
residual reducing and oxidizing agents,
temperature and the pH of the system.
ACTIVITY
MERGAL K14 has a broad spectrum of activity
against bacteria, yeast, fungi and some algae.
The determination of the minimum inhibitory
concentration (MIC) is an indication of the
concentration at which growth of the test
organism is completely inhibited under
laboratory conditions.
EFFICACY
MERGAL K14 is an optimized formulation.
Versus conventional 1.5 % CMIT / MIT
products, and MERGAL K14 frequently
demonstrates improved stability and provides
faster sanitation.

STORAGE & HANDLING

Keep container tightly closed and protected
against freezing temperatures and heat. Use
product within 1 year of manufacture. Store
drums in an upright position. Do not reuse empty
drums. Dispose in accordance with label
directions. Up to date and complete safety and
handling information can be found in the
Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). In their
undiluted forms MERGAL K14 is a skin
sensitizer. For all handling, rubber gloves, face
shield, goggles and suitable protective clothing
should be worn. Contact with skin and inhalation
of spray mists should be avoided. In case of
contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with
plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. For eye
contact, call a physician. Remove and wash all
contaminated clothing before reuse. See product
label and material safety data sheet for statement
of practical treatment, storage and disposal
information.
