Insertion of the Intra-aortic Balloon Catheter

ABBREVIATEDGUIDE FOR SENSATION AND SENSATION PLUS

Preparing the IAB Catheter

Push then twist to firmly attach
the one-way valve to the male
luer fitting of the IAB catheter.

IAB Catheter Insertion

Using the provided 30cc syringe

apply a 30cc vacuum.

Twist and remove the syringe,

keeping the one-way valve attached
to the male luer fitting of the IAB
catheter.

Make a small incision at the exit

of the guidewire.

Insert needle at 45 angle or less,

then insert guidewire (7.5Fr./8Fr.
IAB: 0.025" (0.06cm) / 7Fr. IAB:
0.018" (0.05cm) - sheathless,
0.035" (0.09cm) - sheathed.

For Sheathless Insertion

Insert the vessel dilator over the

guidewire, tapered end first.

For Sheathed Insertion

Carefully spread the

subcutaneous tissue
to facilitate sheathless
insertion.

Remove the IAB catheter

from the T-handle by
pulling STRAIGHT out to
avoid damaging it.

Advance the IAB catheter over the guidewire

into the artery in short
1" strokes until correct
placement is achieved.

Advance the sheath seal

as close to the insertion
site as possible and secure
the IAB catheter to the
patients leg.

Pressure monitoring set up

Insert the introducer

dilator into the sheath
hub and secure.

guidewire into artery
using a rotary motion.
2 Withdraw introducer
dilator leaving sheath
in place.

7Fr. IAB only:

9a Remove 0.035"
(0.09cm) guidewire
and
9b Replace with 0.018"
(0.05cm) guidewire.

Remove the IAB catheter

from the T-handle by
pulling STRAIGHT out
to avoid damaging it.

Advance the IAB catheter in

short 1" strokes through the
sheath into the artery until
correct placement is achieved.
Push the sheath seal into the
hub of the sheath and secure
the IAB catheter to the
patients leg.

Connection to IABP

Remove the guidewire and

aspirate 3cc of blood from the
inner lumen.

Perform a manual flush of the

inner lumen with 3-5cc of flush
solution.

Attach a standard arterial fluid

pressure monitoring apparatus.

Twist and pull to remove the

one-way valve from the IAB
catheter.

Connect the IAB catheters male

luer fitting to the female luer
fitting of the catheter extender.

Connect male luer fitting of

catheter extender to Safety Disk
of CS300. Insert fiber-optic
sensor connector into IABPs
sensor input receptacle until
it clicks.

Connect male luer fitting of

catheter extender to Pneumatic
Module of CARDIOSAVE. Insert
fiber-optic sensor connector into
IABPs sensor input receptacle
until it clicks.
