Brief Overview

Integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) into the 7th FYP of Bangladesh

Bangladesh played a vital role in designing the SDGs with its proposal on Post-2015
Development Agenda containing 11 goals, 58 targets and 241 indicators

The 7th FYP has been formulated accordingly to incorporate the SDGs with due emphasis
on setting up the priority sectors

The GED* (of the Govt. of Bangladesh) was well aware of the international targets and
fully conscious to capture them in national planning as well as the designing the Results
Framework for monitoring

About 77% of the targets identified by BD are reflected in the SDGs

BB will be an early starter in the implementation of the SDGs since its starting year
coincides with that of 7th FYP

The government has placed more emphasis on environmental issues: not only
mobilization of internal resources is needed but a solid partnership through galvanizing
support from the developed countries is essential

The approach laid out under the 7th FYP is based on 3 themes:
i.

Accelerating GDP growth, employment and poverty reduction

ii.

An inclusive strategy aimed towards empowering every citizen through

participation to reap the benefits of development

iii.

A pathway for the development process that is both resilient and sustainable

Along with the SDG goals, the 7th FYP also endorses the Rio+20 outcome document, The
future we want, encouraging nations to forge compacts for sustainable and inclusive
development

It recognizes that growth in macroeconomic indicators like GDP mean very little unless
the benefits can reach the marginalized

Putting the people at the center, the 7th FYP crucially hinges on accelerating inclusive
growth and eradicating extreme poverty

Promoting and sustaining health and nutrition along with improving quality and access to
education are priorities in the 7th FYP that coincide with the SDGs

In line with the SDGs, the 7th Five Year Plan too is focused on ensuring sustainability in
production and consumption that protects the environment

The Seventh Plans strategies for upholding sustainability that falls under the key themes
of: Climate Change Management and Resilience; Environmental Management; and
Disaster Management are consistent to a large degree with the scope of SDGs

Strengthening of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and the National Statistics
Office to improve report facilitation on 7th FYP and SDG goals and targets is also
consistent with the UN, Secretary General Call for Data Revolution
