Three Germantown girls soccer players

finalized plans for playing at the college
level Feb. 3.
Feb. 3 was the first day for signing
National Letters of Intent for several college sports. Goalkeeper Piper Brown will
be attending Fresno Pacific University
while Taylor Johnson will be attending
Winona State University. Both Fresno
Pacific and Winona State are NCAA
Division II schools. Bri Klopfer will be
attending UW-LaCrosse, an NCAA Division
III school which doesn't offer scholarships.
Afterward, Johnson said that besides
Winona State, she was being recruited by
St. Cloud State and Minnesota-Mankato.
She said the recruiting process started
toward the end of her sophomore year of
high school. Johnson noted that she plays
for the Fusion Soccer Club during the club
season, and she has been part of traveling
teams since the eighth grade.
Johnson was first team all North Shore
Conference last year. During the club season, she was part of Fusion's state champion teams in 2012 and 2013 and the SYL
national champion in 2012.
Germantown graduates Amy Flasch and
Mackenzie Challoner also attend Winona

State, and Johnsons said they played "a
huge role" in terms of the recruiting
process.
"I toured it, they showed me around
and it was really awesome. I really liked
it," she said.
Johnson said she toured other schools
but Winona State "felt like home." She
said she plans to major in criminal justice.
Klopfer said that Winona State and
Concordia were recruiting her for soccer,
in addition to UW-LaCrosse.

school," Klopfer said. She added she

enjoyed the coach and the campus, that
her grandparents are UW-LaCrosse alumni.
The school also has a physician assistant
program, which will be her planned major.
Klopfer was a four-year varsity player
and second team all-conference last year.
She also received the North Shore
Conference Scholar Athlete award. While
playing the club season with the Fusion
Soccer Club, she was part of the state
champion team in 2013.

GUEST COLUMN

Tech ed helps students get a jumpstart on the future

BY STATE SUPERINTENDENT
TONY EVERS

I have been an advocate for career

and technical education programs
since my first years of teaching. I
couldnt help but notice that the kids
who were truly involved in these
classes weredriven; they connectedtheir learning to theirfuture and
that motivated them to succeed.
Thats why Im so excited to join
Februarys observance of Career and
Technical Education (CTE) Month.
During school visits I have made across
the state each year since I was elected
state superintendent of public instruction, students and their teachers showcased the coursework and experiences
that ground CTE in the real world.
And, its not just the classroom that
makes CTE so powerful. Its the co-op
programs, work-based learning,and
apprenticeships as well as opportunities through Career and Technical
Student Organizations that help students learn aboutleadership, team-

work, communications, and critical

and creative thinking as well as gaining experiences for the skill-based
careers employers say they need.
In Wisconsin, more than 88,000
high school students, or roughly twothirds of high schoolers, are taking
CTE classes in areas such as health
occupations, marketing and entrepreneurship, manufacturing, technology
and engineering, agriculture and business, and family and consumer science. Partnerships with local businesses and technical colleges support
these course offerings and allow students to explore career options,
receive industry certification, and
earn post secondary credits while progressing toward high school graduation. Transcripted credit isone area
thats seeing strong growth. During
the 2014-15 school year, 24,779 students earned technical collegecredits
while in high school, a 78 percent
increase from five years ago.

Because CTE students experience

the connection between what they
learn and what a future career
demands, they have a higher graduation rate than other students across
the state. Its a serious mistake to
think CTE is a lesser route. Todays CTE
coursework requires understanding
core academics applied in relevant,
real-world applications. In fact, the
applied academics of CTE are the kind
of skill-building every student needs
regardless of their plans after high
school, be it the workforce, militaryservice, technical college, or a two-or
four-year degree.
Coupled with the opportunities of
CTE, Wisconsin is piloting academic
and career planning. The process will
be in place statewide for the 2017-18
school year to help students starting
in sixth grade identify personal
strengths and interests. Because academic and career planning is comprehensive, involvingparents, teachers,

and the community, it gets everyone

thinking early about possibilities that
match a students interests and are
informed by workforce needs. It might
mean a student takes certain academic classes to build a foundation for a
career, joins an after- school activity
to gain some out-of-classroom experiences, or works an apprenticeship to
experience thereal-world of a specific
field. Overall, academic and career
planning will give kids more control
over their future and help them plan
to graduate college and career ready.
Whether our students take one CTE
class to get a glimpse of a certain
career path or they concentrate on a
series of courses that jumpstart a
technical degree or industry certification, theres lots of opportunity for
lifetime learning and success through
CTE. Join me in celebrating Career and
Technical Education Month and the
importance of CTE classes and technical careers.

Suspect arrested after crashing vehicle into pharmacy

A 24-year-old Richfield man was
taken to jail Sept. 29 after a vehicle had
been driven through the front of the
Aurora Pharmacy at 1303 Hwy. 175 in
the village of Richfield.
According to information from the
Washington
County
Sheriff's
Department, deputies first came in contact with the suspect at 4:02 a.m. when
he was trying to gain access to an unoccupied residence in the 3100 block of
Kettle Moraine Parkway. The suspect

told police that he was trying to gain

access to a residence that had been
recently purchased by his father, causing minor damage. A deputy observed a
minor injury to the suspect's head, but
he refused treatment and a medical
transport to a hospital.
At 6:36 a.m., deputies responded to
a report that a vehicle had been driven
through the front of the Aurora
Pharmacy on Hwy. 175. Deputies and
officers from the Germantown Police

that had crashed through the front of
the store and was completely inside.
Deputies determined the vehicle
belonged to the 24-year-old man who
was interviewed by a deputy earlier that
morning.
During the investigation, deputies
determined that the suspect turned
west onto the pharmacy's access driveway, believing it to be an arterial road
and drove the truck into the building.

The man then fled the scene and was

later encountered by deputies along
Kettle Moraine Drive. The man had no
link to the house he was trying to enter
on Kettle Moraine Drive.
The suspect was taken to jail as part
of an investigation for criminal damage
to property, disorderly conduct,
obstructing an officer and possession of
cocaine. The matter remains under
investigation by the Washington County
Sheriff's Department.

Hello there, my name is Odie and I am what you call a

Schipperke mix. My previous owner needed to go into
assisted living and they could not take me with them. So I
came to WCHS to find my new home. I am a mover and a
shaker and am a little busy-body who would love to go on
a nice walk every day. I am good with other dogs and very tolerant but if I have dog
roommates in my new home we should eat our meals in separate rooms. The folks
at the shelter have some great tips for you to help me with my resource guarding.
Because I tend to take treats a bit roughly any children in my new home should be
12 years or older. I will need a special diet from the vet called Canine SO or I get
crystals that build up in my urine. I think cats are awesome and like to kiss (or lick)
them on the face. I'm an independent little guy who does pretty well with handling
but I am a bit private with my mouth. I don't get mad if you try and look in my
mouth, I would just prefer you did not. At 10-15 pounds, I think I am the perfect size
Contact WCHS at 262-677-4388 or visit us for anyone. I know how to sit and come when called and love to play with hard

make a glorious family. Stop by to meet me and I can guarantee you will adore me.
Tip of the Week: The Lowdown on Tooth Decay. Bacteria and plaque-forming foods can cause buildup on a
dogs teeth. This can harden into tartar, possibly causing gingivitis, receding gums, and tooth loss. The solution?
Regular teeth cleaning, of course!

Man treated
for accidental
shooting

Board approves
filling senior
coordinator post

A 22-year-old town of Germantown

man was treated at Community
Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls
Jan. 29 after accidentally shooting
himself in the hand.
According to information from the
Washington
County
Sheriff's
Department, deputies were dispatched
to the hospital at 5:45 p.m. regarding
an accidental shooting. An investigation by deputies revealed that the man
was home alone at his apartment in the
town cleaning a handgun. As he was
putting the weapon back together, the
weapon discharged, striking the victim
in the left hand. The round did not
penetrate the apartment or cause any
danger to the business below.
"The discharge appears to be accidental in nature. The victim will not be
facing any criminal charges," the
Washington
County
Sheriff's
Department said in a statement.

The village of Germantown

approved hiring a full-time senior
coordinator Feb. 1. The motion was
unanimously approved by the board
with no comment.
According to information prepared
for the board by Park and Recreation
Director Mark Schroeder, the position
opened after Katie Rodger was promoted to the position of recreation supervisor. Roger had been serving as senior
coordinator since April 2014.
According to information from
Schroeder, the senior coordinator position is responsible "for the development, implementation, and oversight
of recreation programming for senior
adults, including cultural arts, physical
fitness, health workshops, human services, trips, speakers, special events and
special interest classes, as well supervision of the Senior Center and its property."
Schroeder added in the Feb. 1 memo
to the board that to maintain department services with the least impact to
seniors, the department sought to fill
the vacancy as soon as possible, and
the goal is to have the new employee
hired by March 21. The item was
brought directly to the Village Board
for consideration.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Homestead rally tops Germantown

BY THOMAS J. MCKILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR

The Germantown girls basketball team still

leads the North Shore Conference, but their
biggest rivals made it clear Feb. 2 that keeping
the lead wouldn't be easy.
Homestead reeled off 14 straight points
over three minutes toward the end of the game
to top Germantown 78-66. Afterward,
Germantown still was the North Shore leader
with an 8-2 record while having a 14-4 overall
record but Homestead was next with a 7-2
conference record and a 12-5 overall mark.
"They made plays. They had a great night
offensively and they were due for one.
Unfortunately, it didn't come against somebody else," Germantown Coach Matt Stuve said
of Homestead. "They had a great offensive
night."
The game featured several scoring outbursts. A 9-2 run gave Homestead a 26-10 lead
after Taylor McIlwraith converted a threepoint basket at the 7:51 mark of the first half.
But Germantown rallied and cut Homestead's
lead to 36-30 following a basket by Piper
Brown with 55 seconds left before halftime.
Germantown scored the first basket of the
second half but Homestead scored 10 points
and held a 45-33 lead following two free
throws by McIlwraith at the 15:03 mark of the
second half. A six point run by Germantown

cut Homestead's lead to 45-39 following a basket by Kenzie Schmitz. The Highlanders continued to pull out to a lead against
Germantown with Germantown cutting the
lead. Germantown finally caught up with
Homestead and took a 65-64 lead on a basket
by Schmitz with 3:58 remaining.
"Every time we made a run, got up, they
(Homestead) made plays," Stuve said. "They've
been saving up all those three-pointers and
everything for tonight, haven't seen that on
film for awhile."
Chloe Marotta gave Homestead the lead
with two free throws at the 3:35 mark, sparking the 14-point run that closed out the game
for Homestead.
McIlwraith was the leading scorer for
Homestead with 25 points while Christal Hearn
added 17 points and Marotta added 16 points
for the Highlanders. Schmitz and Olivia Verdin
led Germantown with 23 points each.
Stuve later added he thought Homestead
"would cool down a little bit" in the second
half, but the Highlanders stayed on the attack
and kept making plays.
"At the end of the day, we're still in first
place. We just lost our wiggle room, but we
have four games left to put another number on
that banner, and that's going to be our focus
going forward.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Warhawks lead North Shore

The Germantown boys basketball team is
leading the North Shore Conference standings
and is back in the Division I coaches poll.
The Warhawks posted two wins over conference opponents, beating Nicolet 59-58 Jan.
29 and then topping Homestead 67-49 Feb. 2.
Max Keefe was the leading scorer for
Germantown against Nicolet with 21 points
while Juwan McCloud added 18 points. In the
win over Homestead, McCloud led all scorers
with 22 points while Keefe added 16 points.
After the Homestead win, Germantown was
leading the conference with an 8-1 record
while having a 12-4 overall mark. After being
out of the state Division I coaches poll for a
few weeks following a stretch of three losses
near the beginning of the new year,
Germantown returned to the poll last week
with a ninth-place ranking.

61. Jacob Hartung led Hamilton with 23

points. On Feb. 2, Hamilton lost to West Allis
Hale, 59-51. Hartung led Hamilton with 25
points. Afterward, Hamilton was tied for third
in the Greater Metro with a 6-4 conference
record and a 13-5 overall mark.
