R ecently, I had a complaint (to God) about the untimely
death of a relatively young mother of four in Fruitland
Park. I was frustrated with God, I simply could not
under-stand it, but on this occasion, He spoke immediately. He
said that there would be, for a period of several days, an open
portal to heaven for this family. And, as I often do, I tried to
measure what I felt God was saying with the Bible. Again, the
answer was almost immediate-I thought of Jacob’s ladder
(Genesis 28). Since that time, I have read and re-read that
chapter and have learned several things. I do not often say
this, and it may offend some, but I believe that God has a word
for us from this story.
You will need to read the chapter and pray about what I am
about to say, in other words, test what is being said.
Jacob was in a time of transition from his father’s house to his
uncle’s house. It was a very difficult trip, especially for him.
The Bible says, “He came to a certain place and stayed there
all night, because the sun had set.” It was at this place that
God spoke to him in a dream. And God just didn’t speak, he
gave him incredible promises.

When Jacob woke he said, “Surely God is in this place, and I
did not know it…..How awesome is this place! This is none
other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”
The place where Jacob spent the night could not have
been comfortable, in fact he used a stone as a pillow, but he
called the place AWESOME. And it was here, at this spot that
God chose to speak to him-to reveal powerful things about his
future.
God has us in an uncomfortable place, but I believe He is in
our midst and it is awesome. I would urge you that this is the
very place that God wants to give us revelations, just like
Jacob.
I was recently watching the History Channel and they did a
program that dealt mostly with, guess who? Jacob. Did you
know that the Hebrew word for ladder is better translated,
“ramp”? Now I ask you, where do you usually find a ramp?
From this point on, I hope we can view this place, (our
transition) as a ramp that leads to the gate of heaven. I believe
that God has brought us here and not only has He brought us
here, He is here with us!

BEING A SOMEBODY

I watched a movie the other night

at some friend’s house and it
has me stirred. The movie won
some Oscars and is a very true to life
movie. It is about things that go on
around us every day but we don’t
see it because we don’t live there.
The movie is about a teen that is
abused every way imaginable,
however; the end of the movie gives
you the hope that the abuse cycle
will be broken because of her love for
her own children and because
somebody cared about her and told
her that she was smart and loved.
I don’t know about you but I sit in
the comfort of my living room
watching the 6:00 news about the
child molesters, the gang members,
the robbers the murderers and think
why doesn’t somebody do something
about this? Why are these people
acting this way? Well, much of it is
because that is how they were
raised. They were raised by people
who did not love them or who were
so addicted to something that they
loved that addiction more than they
loved their children.
Of course that isn’t true with every
child but the statistics show that if
your mother or father was an
alcoholic, an abuser, or a drug addict
you most likely will end up the same
way. They repeat and act the same
way they see their parents act. Just
say one curse word in front of a two
year old and see how long it takes
them to repeat it.
They can’t say mommy or daddy but
oh let the curse words fall right out of
their sweet little mouths.
I for one, somewhere in the back
of my mind think that these people
need a good dose of Jesus and
should be in church. I keep fooling
myself into thinking that they will walk
in, sit down, get saved and leave a
better person and their life will be
great from here on out.
Who am I kidding? Change is
difficult. If you don’t believe me just
change your routine for a day. If we
don’t’ have donuts and coffee one
Sunday morning see how well we all
accept change!
The point is this.
People who are in desperate abusive
situations either are not going to
come to us or are not able to come to
us. We have to go to them. (I think
some guy named Jesus did that.)
Somebody has to choose to make a
difference in someone’s life. Satan
has a plan to keep them in their
despair and we need to have a plan
to help get them out of it. I want to
help but that means I have to get off
of my butt stop talking about helping
and actually do it. If each of our
families just helped one person get
out of the trenches their lives would
be better and so would ours.
If nothing else we can tutor a child,
listen to them, be an advocate for
them and help build some self worth
and tell them
that they are
loved.
