MANY OF YOU know
how much I love and am
motivated and inspired
by stirring quotes. In her
book, This is. I am. Thank
you., my sister-in-law Tracy
Gillespie collected hundreds
of powerful quotes of hope,
widsom, comfort, strength,
and empowerment and put
them all together at your
fngertips for an endless
supply of just-what-you-needed-to-hear words to help in
almost any situation.
As I was pondering what to write this month, I looked to
her book for inspiration. I read so many quotes that moved
me, but this one (by Ralph Waldo Emerson) reached out of
the page and grabbed my heart. It said, "To leave the world
a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life
has breathed easier because you lived that is to have
succeeded."
On February 21, 2013, my father left this world after a
lengthy battle with congestive heart failure and Parkinson's
disease. He fathered seven children (and was a step-father
to four others) and imparted to us his drive and ambition,
work ethic, and strong beliefs to care about the wellbeing
of others and to make the world a better place. We are his
legacy. He succeeded in life.
My sister Deborah was killed in a tragic car crash May 24,
2015. Friends and family to this day continue to post on her
Facebook wall saying how much she is missed. During her
life, she fought to open people's eyes to global warming and
she encouraged others to do their part to take care of this
earth. She brought smiles to people's faces with her angelic
singing. She nurtured and took care of the sick. She drove
an old beat up Toyota Echo and made less than $15,000 a
year. She succeeded in life.
I know that many of you are trying to reach your goals
in 2016, whether it be to lose weight, compete in your frst
bodybuilding show, get that job promotion or a raise, or buy
your dream car. I wish you the best in your endeavors. Just
don't forget that it is the simplest things buying someone's
lunch, calling an old friend, caring for the poor, showing up
when a friend's parent is in the hospital, fghting for the
rights of those who are less fortunate that mean more and
add up to a truly successful life.
And so I challenge you this year to help one life breathe
easier lend a hand to your neighbor, encourage someone
to achieve a goal, offer to work out with someone at the
gym who is struggling. Let's get out of our own heads and
let's not get so lost in our own pursuits of greatness that we
forget what life and success are really about.

FOR MOST OF US, beginning a
new program or doing something that
weve never done before can be very
overwhelming and confusing. You may
have seen an advertisement on TV or
the Internet or you may have heard one
on the radio claiming to have the next
weight-loss miracle solution that will
help you get rid of all of your extra fat
in no time at all. But how do you know
if it really works and whether or not its

Cory Jackson has worked at Max Muscle Fayetteville for more than 4 years and
was a customer prior to that. Always into weightlifting, he didnt become a serious
powerlifter until about 2 years ago. He suffered a setback by blowing out his knee
while attempting a squat in 2013. After several months of recovery and rehab he
began lifting again. At frst he was only participating in bench press competitions and
only recently did he compete in all three lifts: bench, squat, and deadlift. In July, he
competed in all three disciplines, winning the overall best lifter trophy by putting up a
total of 1,585 pounds for the three lifts. This title qualifed him for the World Natural
Power Lifting (WNPF) competition in November in Atlanta. He competes in the 242

I really wanted to contact somebody on what a great store owner


Brandon Brockway at Max Muscle Fair Oaks is. Over the past 7 years, he has helped me
with my pre/post supplements, protein, and fat burners. He's so knowledgable, but most importantly,
he genuinely cares.
I coach a boys youth AAU Basketball team, "Hawaii Heat." They are a combination of 3rd/4th
graders from the local area. While getting the team started, I asked Brandon if he could sponsor the
boys' shooting jerseys and he said, "No problem," without any hesitation. I was completely shocked.
He said, "You have been a loyal customer of mine for many years now, so let me give back to your
boys' basketball team." He was our frst sponsor. The boys were so excited and proud of their newwarm-up jerseys with the Max Muscle logo on the back. He also gave the boys Max Muscle water
bottles and bags. And I have to admit, they are pretty awesome!! The boys love them.
For our frst season of AAU basketball, the boys had a phenomenal season; they won 10
tournaments. They are also now currently Ranked No. 3 in Northern California, and Ranked No. 20
on the entire west coast, which consists of CA, AZ, NM, TX, NV, UT, CO, ID, WA, OR, and WY. It's
such a huge accomplishment and as their coach, words can't explain how proud I am of them, but we
also never forgot our sponsor/good friend Brandon Brockway. He was a huge part of the boys success
this season!! We just can't thank him enough! Not only do we need more business owners like him,
we also need more human beings like him! You should be proud to have such a big hearted and very

my resoutios
gong stog?
HERE WE ARE moving into a new
year again. I have been through more
than 50 of these and at least 40 that I
actually felt the need to set some New
Years resolutions. They have changed
a little over the years, but overall the
same ones keep coming up every
January. Its a little unfair that before
every year ends, we go through a
2-month holiday binge of partying
with family and friends, and inevitably
we gain some extra pounds and
feel horrible. And the most popular
resolutions again this year are (drum
roll please) to lose weight, eat better,
and, work out consistently. Honestly,
they are all pretty much one in the
same.
I went to the gym on January 2nd
and of course there were hundreds of
people working out and I ended up
waiting to get on a bike. As I fnally
settled in on a bike, I looked around
at all the new faces and thought to
myself How long will this last? Here
we are a couple weeks later and I
would estimate that 25 percent of the
crowd has already started faking out.
Better for me as I dont have to wait
for a bike. So the New Years cycle
continues as the resolutions are made,
only to be broken come February.
However, congratulations are in order
to the small percentage who actually
make the change and take charge of
their life this year.
I propose that in 2016 we change
our resolutions to be a little different.
Lets not call it resolutions but simply,
lifestyle changes. Going to the
gym is not a goal or resolution, its
simply an essential daily function
no different than making sure you
go to work or getting the kids off to

school. Eating a clean healthy diet


isnt the exception, its the rule. I
know its easier to say than to do, but
the resolution idea obviously is not
working for most people.
They say your brain needs 21 days
to develop a habit (some studies are
now saying you need even longer). So
be as strict as possible so that your
body adapts to your changes and let
them simply become a part of your
everyday life. I cant imagine starting

recently found that the temperature and length
of time tea leaves are steeped affects their
antioxidant properties and differs with the type

white tea for two hours in either cold or hot
water. Green tea yields the most antioxidants
with a prolonged (two hour) cold water
steeping. And black tea? While black leaves
contain the least amount of antioxidants of

The Experience Matters

of Chicago Booth School of Business. The researchers found that
while people tend to focus on the outcome of the effort both before
and after completion, (such as improved health from working out),
they value the experience itself while engaging in it and are more

say that this study is important because it helps us to realize that
were more likely to stay motivated if we choose experiences that

Remember that birds and


bees talk when you were
an adolescent? Invariably, it
included a caution against
unprotected sex because it
only takes once to conceive
a baby. But for those couples
experiencing infertility,
conception is not that easy.

Infertility or the inability to conceive


after one year of regular, unprotected
intercourse affects more couples than
you may think, said David Adamson, MD,
founder and CEO of ARC fertility. Over
their lifetime, about one couple in six will
have diffculty getting pregnant when
they want to, he explained.
According to Dr. Adamson, the
underlying cause of infertility can be
determined to be a problem with the
females reproductive system in about
50 percent of cases, and with the males
reproductive system in about 25 percent
of cases. In some instances, the problem
is a combination of both female and
male issues, and in fewer situations, a
cause of infertility cant be found. This
is called unexplained infertility, he said.
This condition is probably caused by
as-yet-unknown egg, sperm, genetic,
immunological, and other conditions.

Conception 101

If you remember back to your 7th grade


sex education class, there are a number
of events (other than intercourse) that
must occur harmoniously in order to

make a baby. First, during the beginning


phase of the womans menstrual cycle,
the hormones FSH and LH are released
from the brain, where they travel to the
ovaries, stimulating the growth of some of
her immature eggs in their shells (follicles).
These hormones also stimulate the
production of the hormone estrogen, which
eventually causes FSH to turn off limiting
the number of maturing follicles. During this
time, one of the maturing eggs becomes
dominant, and continues to produce
estrogen, while the remaining follicles die
off.
The rise in estrogen triggers a surge in
LH, which stimulates the dominant follicle
to release its egg, causing ovulation.
The egg is then captured by the fmbriae
(projections on the end of the fallopian
tubes) and swept into the tube, where it
awaits fertilization.
Once the follicle has released its egg, it
develops into the corpus luteum, a structure
that secretes yet another hormone
progesterone which prepares the uterus
for a fertilized egg to implant. Prior to this,
the womans cervix has begun to increase
the amount and thickness of mucus
production, so that if intercourse occurs,
it can capture the sperm and help guide it
toward the egg for fertilization.
If all goes as planned, the sperm will
travel to and fertilize the egg (conception),
and then the newly developed embryo will
travel down through the fallopian tube and
implant successfully into the wall of the
uterus. But there are many things that
can go wrong in this process.

Conception Challenges

In the womans body, abnormal levels of the


hormones needed to orchestrate ovulation
and implantation, a blockage of the fallopian
tubes, fbroids or polyps in the uterus, or
even abnormal cervical mucus can cause
a pregnancy to fail, said Dr. Adamson.
Common male problems that contribute to
infertility include decreased sperm count
or motility (movement), abnormal shape
of sperm, as well as varicoceles (a vein
abnormality in the scrotum).
And a womans age is a very important
factor affecting fertility, said Jane Frederick,
MD, medical director of HRC Fertility in
Newport Beach, California. According to
Dr. Frederick, a woman is born with a fnite
number of eggs. Throughout her life, the
majority of these immature eggs will die,
many prior to puberty, then more with each
menstrual cycle. About 10 years prior to
menopause (approximately at age 40), few
follicles remain. This means that fertility
declines rapidly as we approach that age.

That biological clock is a very real thing,


she claimed.
The good news is that for many couples,
there is an easy enough fx. There are
easy tests that can be done when a couple
comes in for a fertility consultation, Dr.
Frederick explained. In addition to a
physical examination, these include blood
work to determine levels of reproductive
hormones, and ultrasound testing to
measure the follicle count in the ovaries
and to rule out polyps, fbroids, and uterus
abnormalities. A hysterosalpingogram
(HSG, an x-ray procedure) will determine
if the fallopian tubes are blocked. For
males, a semen analysis can be done as
well as a scrotal ultrasound if needed, to
detect a possible varicocele. Following the
results of the testing, the vast majority of
couples can be helped with medications (to
treat hormone imbalances and stimulate
ovulation), or simple procedures to correct
problems such as fallopian tube blockage
or varicoceles. Only about two percent
of infertile couples need high technology
treatments such as in-vitro fertilization
(IVF), said Dr. Frederick.
When to see a fertility specialist?
Women younger than age 35 who
are having regular intercourse without
contraception who are not pregnant after
one year should see a fertility specialist,
said Dr. Adamson. For those aged 35-40,
seek help after six months, and if 40 or
older, after three months.

High-Tech Treatments

When a simple fx for infertility isnt


possible, fertility experts have several more
advanced treatment options available,
said Rashmi Kudesia, MD, assistant clinical
professor of reproductive medicine at the
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
and reproductive endocrinologist and
infertility specialist at RMA of New York.
Two of the most widely used treatments are
intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro
fertilization (IVF).
IUI is a procedure where processed
sperm (sperm that have been washed to
concentrate the hardiest specimens into a
small amount of fuid) are inserted through
a small tube (catheter) into the uterus. IUI
may be combined with fertility medications,
which are used both to induce ovulation and
to stimulate the ovaries to produce more
than one mature egg. The goal of IUI is to
increase the number of sperm that reach
the fallopian tubes to better the chances
of conception. It is a frst-line treatment
used in situations of unexplained fertility,
low sperm count or motility, problems with
ejaculation, or cervical problems such as

scarring (which may hinder the sperms


ability to enter the uterus). It is also
used for those requesting donor sperm
insemination. Couples may require more
than one cycle (round of treatment) in
order to conceive.
Although far less expensive than IVF,
IUI is also less effective, with success
rates highest in women under age 35.
In the best prognosis patients, said Dr.
Kudesia, IUIs have a success rate per
cycle of approximately 20-25 percent.
Another disadvantage of IUI, he added,
is that when this treatment is combined
with fertility medications, there is an
increased risk of multiple births.
IVF is a procedure in which the
ovaries are stimulated with fertility drugs
to produce multiple mature eggs, then
the eggs are retrieved from the ovaries
via a minor surgical procedure, examined
for maturity and quality, and sometimes
screened for chromosomal abnormalities.
The best quality eggs are placed
together with sperm in a culture medium
and incubated overnight. In some cases,
intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
may be used to directly inject a single
sperm into each mature egg. After
confrming that the eggs have been
fertilized, they are allowed to develop
for as long as six days, then one or
more embryos (a maximum of three) are
transferred to the womans uterus via a
catheter. IVF is used when IUI has failed,
in situations of very low sperm count,
when the fallopian tubes are blocked or
damaged, or when donor eggs are being
used. It is often the frst-line treatment
for older women who want the highest
possibility of conception without delay.
According to Dr. Kudesia, IVF has been
used since the late 1970s, but success
rates have improved exponentially.

Current trends in IVF are moving


toward the transfer of a single embryo to
decrease the risk of multiple births. And
when the embryo has been screened for
chromosomal abnormalities, the success
rate with a single embryo transfer can be
quite high, approaching 50 percent in
the youngest patients, he added.

Cost of Treatments

While many insurance companies pay


for infertility testing such as blood
work, ultrasounds and x-rays as well as
surgical procedures or medications to
correct reproductive problems, few pay
for fertility treatments such as IUI and
IVF, making these procedures too costly
for many couples to consider. According
to RESOLVE, the National Infertility
Association, the national average cost
for one cycle of IUI, using your partners
sperm, is $900. IVF is even pricier with
an average cost of $11-12,000 per cycle,
more than double this fgure if using
donor eggs.

Planning for the Future

Young adults should plan their


reproductive life just as they plan their
education and employment, said Dr.
Adamson. For a young woman who
wishes to delay childbearing until her
mid-30s or beyond, elective egg freezing
may provide an insurance policy against
ovarian aging.
Egg freezing is becoming popular
these days, since studies have shown
that using frozen eggs for IVF is
comparable in success with using fresh
ones. But theres a hefty price tag
attached: Egg harvesting costs about
$10,000, storing the frozen eggs about
$1,000 per year, and using them an
additional $5,000. MS&F

can do to optimize the chances
for pregnancy:
FOR BOTH WOMEN AND MEN

Maintain a healthy weight. Both


being overweight and being underweight
can interfere with male and female
reproductive hormones.
Eat a healthy diet, with plenty of fruits
and veggies.
Exercise, but not too much. Excessive
exercise can throw of your hormone
levels.
Dont smoke or use recreational
drugs, and limit alcohol use.
Avoid environmental toxins, such as

These are endocrine disruptors that
can interfere with the reproductive
system.
Make sure any chronic illnesses, such

See a doc if you suspect a
reproductive infection. STDs such as
Gonorrhea and Chlamydia can scar
or block fallopian tubes and cause
problems with sperm quality.

For Arm Waves, grip each end of
the rope frmly with both hands
and start swinging your arms up
and down at the same time to
create parallel movements that are
going up and down like wavelike
motions with the rope. For Arm
Circles, swing ropes out to your
sides in wide circles. For Alternate
Arm Waves, swing one arm up
frst and then the other. For Side
Throws, keep feet grounded
and pivot side to side, throwing
ropes over to the side of you.
Note: Maintain the velocity
and fow of the waves for
entire interval no matter how
bad it burns. Heavy rope

Box Jumps

Stand in front of the box with feet directly under the hips
and hands by your sides. Lower yourself into the jumping
position by bending at the knees and hips. Keep your
head up and back straight. Explosively jump from the
crouched position while swinging your arms. Land
softly on the center of the platform absorbing the
impact with your legs, preferably your heels. Stand
tall after landing on the box. Return to starting
position by either jumping backwards off the
box, or by stepping down and repeating the
movement. This exercise will develop lower
body strength, as well as increase your
vertical jump.

Deadlifts

Starting the pull, the

really want to concentrate on pulling
with your hips and not your arms when
fully raising your torso. When you have
reached the upright position, without
locking your knees, keep your legs
straight and dont lean back at the end
of your lift. Keep your chest out and
your shoulders rolled back at all times
while holding an arch in your lower
back. The Deadlift is a compound
movement. It builds core strength,
but it also pertains to other
muscles like the lower back and
glutes.

Push Press

Make sure youre exhaling through the


upward movement and inhaling during
the downward movement.
Upward Movement Phase:
Slightly fex the hips and knees, keeping
torso erect. Immediately follow with an
explosive push upward by extending the
knees. Keep torso erect and tensed. At
maximum hip and knee extension, shift
body weight to balls of feet and extend
ankle joints. At maximum plantar
fexion, push bar from the shoulders.
Push the bar with the arms to a fully
extended elbow position overhead.
Downward Movement Phase:
Lower bar to shoulders. Flex hips and
knees slightly as bar touches shoulders.
Straighten the hips and knees before
the upward movement phase begins
again.

Lateral Raises

Grasp dumbbells in front of thighs with


elbows slightly bent. Bend over slightly
with hips and knees bent slightly. Raise
upper arms to sides until elbows are
shoulder height. Maintain elbows' height
above or equal to wrists. Lower and
repeat. Keep elbows pointed high while
maintaining slight bend through elbows
throughout the movement. At top of
movement, elbows should be directly
lateral to shoulders.

Sled Push

Load sled with desired amount of


weight. Lean into the sled, with arms
extended and grab the polls. While in
an athletic posture, began to push the
sled as fast as you can, while focusing
on extending your knees and hips.

The month of February is a special


time of the year for us. Not only do
we celebrate Valentines Day in our
household, we celebrate Leahs birthday
on the same day. In case you are
wondering, yes, that does mean two gifts.
With that said, over the last few years,
especially during Valentines Day, we
often receive questions on how we have
managed a healthy lifestyle through
both the on and off seasons with the
popular topic including how to deal with
being hangry. Living ft and healthy
together defnitely has its challenges,
especially when it comes time to step on
stage. We have outlined a few tips that
have helped strengthen our relationship,
plus we are providing a killer couples'
workout.

Food: When it comes to food, we love to


shop, prep, and better yet, eat together.
Because diet is 80 percent nutrition,
we realized instead of shopping,
cooking, and eating solo, we might as
well spend it together. This has helped
us communicate better and hold us
accountable to healthier food options, as
well as create unique food concoctions.

Things that were a chore for us before


are now looked at as a bonding event.
Do you ever witness the hangry
side of your loved one? Us too! This
is actually a great deal simpler to get
through than many people think. For us,
it is about communication. We inform
each other when our energy is down and
start feeling the hangry mode creeping
up on us. Plus, we apologize in advance
for any unkind words that could possibly
be said!

Going Out: It is important to make time


for going out, whether it be for dinner,
a movie, or just a friends house. We
make sure to enjoy time well spent with
family and friends as often as possible

and try to limit our dining out to one


to two times a week. Our advice is to
fnd healthy restaurants with good food
choices and take a peek at the menu
in advance so you can have an idea of
what to order when you get there. This
will help reduce your stress of what to
order and help you succeed in sticking to
your meal plan.

to keep you accountable, motivated, and

favorite exercises that you can do
as a workout together with your
swolemate. We suggest a 15-minute
treadmill warm-up where you walk
at an incline of about 10 to 15
percent and at a speed of about
2.5 to 3.5. This is a great time to
connect and start the workout on a
positive note. Put your phones away
and spend some time talking with
each other. Ready for the workout?
Here we go!

1. Elastic Band Bis, Tris, & Back


Do 3 sets of 10 reps
Using an elastic band, have your partner put the band under his/her feet while
you use the band to complete 10 curls. Have your partner move the band so it
goes behind his/her back for support while you pull the band, complete 10 rows.
Move the band back down to the feet. Facing your partner and leaning forward,
complete 10 tricep kickbacks with your palm facing your body (do one arm at a
time for more resistance) or both arms at once.

2. Partner Pull-Ups
Do 4 sets of 10 reps
Do these with a wide grip, palms facing away
from face. Need help? Bend your knees 90
degrees and have your swolemate stabilize
your ankles. You can use this as leverage to
pull yourself up!

3. Plyo Box Jumps


Do 4 sets of 15 jumps
Face each other and
place the plyo box in
the middle. Alternate
jumping onto and off
the box. Increase the
diffculty by jumping with
one leg at a time.

4. Medicine Ball Sit Ups


Do 4 sets of 20 reps
Using a weighted medicine ball, complete 20 sit ups doing the following
movement: have your swolemate stand on your feet while holding a
medicine ball. Complete a full sit up without the medicine ball. When
you reach the top of the frst sit up, grab the medicine ball. Holding
it behind your head complete another sit up handing the ball to your
partner at the top. Alternate with and without the medicine ball until
you reach 20 reps. Note: No medicine ball? Do 30-40 reps.

Using a bench, have one person get
in a pushup position with their feet
on the bench while simultaneously

swolemate until you complete 10 walking lunges (per leg) without touching your
knee to the ground. The person in front is your motivation and also determines the
pace. After 10 lunges, turn 180 degrees and follow your swolemate back another
10 lunges. Hows the view?

9. Bicep Burn
Do one set each
This is a fun one! It is up to your
swolemate to decide what you need.
Here is how it works: You are now
the boss. The goal is to burn your
swolemate's biceps. Using multiple
dumbbell weights, put him/her
through a bicep workout until they
can no longer go. It is up to you to
adjust the workout based on their
speed and demeanor. Just remember,
youre up next!

What is your favorite body part to train and

part to train is my glutes! I'm not naturally blessed with much


junk in my trunk so I'm proud to say I've built this booty from
scratch. I've found that sumo squats, jump squats, walking
lunges, straight-leg deadlifts, good mornings, and cable glute
kickbacks, along with really focusing on that mind/muscle
connection, have really helped shaped my behind.

What is your advice to others


who aspire to be like you?
My advice is to go for it! Having a good
support system or friends and family has been
helpful to me. I also think it's really important
for people to realize that everyone starts
somewhere. I'm not just naturally thin or
blessed with a high metabolism and six pack
abs. I've had three kids and honestly I just
woke up one day and decided, "I don't want to
feel this way about my body anymore. I want
feel healthy and confdent!" So I changed my habits and set small,
attainable goals. It's never too late to set and
accomplish new goals.

What are your top fve training


tips for your sport?

1. You can't out-train a bad diet. If you


want to see your bodys full potential, diet
is a huge factor. Fuel you body for success.
2. Always focus on your form.
3. Don't be afraid to lift heavy!
4. Get enough sleep! Muscles repair
themselves while you sleep so rest is
important!
5. Stay hydrated! I drink 1-1.5 gallons of water a day.

A Little More Rose...


Above anything, I am a wife and a mother to three
very active, wonderful, and crazy little boys. I'm an
ACE-certifed personal trainer, group ftness instructor
and NPC Bikini competitor. Competing has lit a fre
deep inside me and drives me to lead a healthy,
active lifestyle and to be a positive role model. I love
the platform competing has given me to show other

Normally I do 20 minutes of light cardio to warm up


my muscles before weight training and I do 40 minutes
of HIIT (high intensity interval training) on the stairmill
after weight training fve times a week. When I'm on a
show prep, I'll add 50 minutes of low-intensity, fasted
cardio in the morning.

Five Tips To Stay on Track

When you cant fgure it out, track
your food. It becomes a math
equation instead of a guessing
game.

1. Eat clean. Your body wasnt made


to deal with a bunch of additives and
preservatives.
2. Carbs are not bad. Processed food
and sugar is the problem
3. Dont give everything up. But make
yourself earn the extras.
4. Be prepared. Prep food in advance
and eat frequently throughout the day.
Keep your metabolism up. (Hunger is not
a bad thing; it means your metabolism is
working.)
5. Drinks count too. Watch the contents
of lattes, sodas, iced teas and smoothies.
If we dont pay attention we can get a lot
of calories and sugar from unsuspecting
places.

As her strength increased, weight


loss became a by-product. As Melissa
learned how to use nutrition to fuel

a calorie defcit, that the quality of
calories matter, and portion control is

Once suffering from bad posture and

blood were 55 percent less likely to suffer from stroke than those with low
levels of blood lycopene.
But dont just eat them plain! Fat-soluble lycopene nourishes the body more
when paired with a heart-healthy oil such as olive oil. Cooking tomatoes boosts
the antioxidant benefts by releasing even more lycopene.
For a tasty appetizer, roast grape tomatoes tossed in olive oil and your

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly


grease a 9-inch tart pan with an additional
tablespoon of coconut butter.
2. In a food processor, combine the four,
honey, cashews, and salt. Add the coconut
butter and pulse until mixture becomes a
coarse meal. Add the lemon juice and pulse
until combined.
3. Press mixture into the prepared tart pan,
covering bottom and slightly up the sides.
Bake for 18 minutes or until golden brown.
Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.
4. Melt chocolate in a double boiler over
medium heat, do not stir.
5. Heat coconut milk in a small saucepan
over medium high heat until it just begins
to boil. Pour the coconut milk over the
chocolate, add the vanilla extract and stir
using a wooden spoon until smooth and
glossy.
6. Pour chocolate mixture over the baked
crust. Cover with plastic wrap and place in
the refrigerator for 3 hours or until set.
7. Slice into 16 slices. Serve chilled topped
with fresh raspberries. Store any remaining
torte in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Carnitine: Good for Weight Loss and More!


Researchers at the Kashan University of Medical Sciences
designed at study to determine the efects of oral carnitine
supplementation on weight loss, glycemic, and lipid profles
in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In a
prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled
trial, 60 overweight women diagnosed with PCOS received
250 mg carnitine supplements or placebo for 12 weeks.
Results showed that 12 weeks of carnitine administration in
PCOS women resulted in reductions in weight, BMI, waist
circumference, and hip circumference, and benefcial efects
on glycemic control. These fndings may also beneft women

a cross-sectional study of 2,570
women ages 18 to 79 years,

Researchers from the University of Memphis set out to determine the efects
of Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) supplementation in healthy, exercise-trained
men with joint-specifc pain. Twenty-nine men between the ages of 20
and 46 years, who reportedly experienced chronic joint pain as a result of
strenuous exercise, participated in the pilot study. All men received 3.2g CQ
daily for 8 weeks. Outcome measures included a questionnaire to determine
their degree of joint pain (WOMAC) and clinical measurements (heart rate,
blood pressure, blood biomarkers). Subjects taking the CS showed statistical
reductions in WOMAC scores with no adverse clinical changes. Research
concluded that an 8-week course of supplementation with CQ reduced
joint pain in a sample of 29 young, otherwise healthy, exercise-trained men.
