Air Standard Cycles
1. The pressure and temperature at the start of compression in an air standard Otto
cycle are 101 kPa and 300 K. the compression ratio is 8. The amount of heat
addition is 2000 kJ/kg of air. Determine the cycle thermal efficiency and the mean
effective pressure.
2.

An air standard Otto cycle is to be designed according to the following

specifications:
Pressure at start of compression process = 101 kPa.
Temperature at start of compression process = 300 K.
Compression ratio = 8.
Maximum pressure in the cycle = 8 MPa.
Determine the cycle thermal efficiency and the mean effective pressure.

3. An air standard Otto cycle operates with compression ratio of 8.55. At the
beginning of the compression the air is at 0.98 bar and 32 C. If during the heat
addition process the pressure is tripled, Determine:
a) The thermal efficiency of the cycle, and
b) The thermal efficiency of a Carnot engine operating between the same
temperature limits.
4. An air standard Diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 18 and the heat transferred
to the working fluid per cycle is 1800 kJ/kg. At the beginning of the compression
process the pressure is 0.1 MPa and the temperature is 15 C. Determine the
pressure and the temperature at each point of the cycle, the thermal efficiency and
the mep.
5. An air standard Diesel cycle has a compression ratio of 15:1. The pressure and the
temperature at the beginning of compression are 101 kPa and 300 K. The
maximum temperature of the cycle is 2800 K, Determine:
i. The cut off ratio.
ii. The thermal efficiency, and
iii. The mean effective pressure.
6. An engine operates on the theoretical Diesel cycle with a compression ratio of
16:1 and fuel is injected for 10 % of the stroke. If the pressure and temperature of
the air entering the cylinder are 0.98 bar and 17 C, Determine:
a) The cut off ratio.
b) The temperature at the end of compression and at the end of heat
rejection processes, and
c) The thermal efficiency.

7. In a Dual combustion cycle the maximum temperature is 2000 C and the

maximum pressure is 70 bar. Calculate the thermal efficiency and the mean
effective pressure when the pressure and temperature at the start of compression is
1 bar and 17 C and the compression ratio are 18:1.
8. An air standard Dual cycle operates with a compression ratio of 14:1. At the
beginning of the isentropic compression the condition is 27 C and 0.96 bar. The
total heat addition is 1680 kJ/kg of which one fourth is added at constant volume
and the reminder at constant pressure. Determine the thermal efficiency and the
mean effective pressure.
