Course Overview:

This course introduces students to the basic techniques and concepts


of the music production/technology field; with emphasis on building
strong fundamentals and real-world practical application through group
and independent project work.

Course Objectives/:
Course Content

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

Recognize and identify the audio components of a recording studio setup.


Describe the various microphone styles and placements for effective audio
capture.
Demonstrate basic competency in various Digital Audio Workstation software
systems, including GarageBand, Audacity, and several industry standard
systems.
Demonstrate a basic knowledge of standard mixing/mastering techniques.
Recognize the most commonly used effects in audio post-production.
Identify how these methods have and effect on the quality and acceptability of
the finished product.
Illustrate a broad familiarity with the real world applications of the techniques
studied.
Describe the general history of music production technology in the 20th-21st
centuries.
Demonstrate proper handling and care of audio equipment.

Selected materials, handouts and online articles/videos.
Attendance requirements:
Students are expected to attend classes.
Assignment Expectations:
Portions of requisite material are not contained in handouts/articles. Note taking and strong
retention skills are critical.
Papers and projects must be turned in on time. Independent projects may require more time to
complete than allotted during class.
Classroom Decorum:
a) Safety is a priority all students will conduct themselves in a safe manner with an awareness
of all other around them.
b) Punctuality is vital for success in the studio, at the gig, and in classroom.
c) Be respectful of the instructor and of each other. Only one person should be speaking at a
time. Private conversations will not be tolerated.
d) Raise your hand if you want to ask or answer a question. Questions are encouraged at any
time during a lecture of discussion. Please wait to be acknowledged before you speak in
order to ensure that all students have the opportunity to express themselves equally.
e) Cell phones or electronic devices are NOT permitted.
f) There are no foods or beverages allowed in the computer lab.
g) Proper handling and care of equipment is critical. Misuse or abuse of lab equipment will not
be tolerated.
Academic Integrity and Plagiarism:
Manchester Community College/Great Path Academy is committed to academic integrity. An academically
honest student submits for evaluation only such work, including tests papers, reports, presentations or ideas that
have been written, performed or created solely by that student. On those occasions when the stated rules of the
course permit collaborative efforts, the contributions of other individuals and sources should be appropriately
acknowledged. It is at all times the responsibility of the student to maintain conduct consistent with the concept
and definition of academic integrity, including not only to the avoidance of plagiarism, but also other actions
further outlined in the Student Handbook. Plagiarism is the act of taking someone elses idea, writing or work
and passing it off as ones own. If you fail to give credit to the source of the material, whether directly or
indirectly or put in your own word, this lack of credit constitutes plagiarism. Whether you take, buy or receive
material from the Internet, from a book, from another student or from any other source, and you fail to give
credit, you are stealing ideas; you are engaging in plagiarizing. Plagiarism is a serious violation of academic
standards and has serious academic consequences for the student. Plagiarism and other forms of academic
dishonesty will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic failing (F) for the assignment or exam.

*All students will need a folder, and loose paper dedicated for Music Technology along with a pen and pencil.
Additionally, students will need know their login information to log into the MCC/GPA computers for almost every
class. REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORDS.*
