COURSEDESCRIPTION
To grow and thrive in todays competitive environment, organisation must deal with several major
challenges. Value creation has become more critical than ever. Traditionally, the concept of value
has been considered a function of finance and accounting. However, the belief about management
of human resource being critical for long term value of a company and its survival has only
strengthened in recent times. All aspects of Human Resource Management (HRM)including how
companies interact with the environment; acquire, prepare, develop, and compensate human
resources; and design and measure work- can help companies meet their competitive challenges
and create value. HRM in a way is response to the changing business need. Corporate as well as
academia realizes that in such a competitive world HRM needs to redefine its role, competencies so
that it can create a sustainable competitive advantage for the organisation.

COURSEOBJECTIVE
The course would attempt to provide a strategic perspective to the student helping them understand
how HR can perform a more proactive role in the organisation contributing to the organizational
objectives. Special emphasis would be laid on providing analysis and understanding of the various
HR processes and systems suggesting changes required.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. To help students develop an appreciation of various issues related to effective and efficient
management of human resources and conditions under which management and union
works.

EVALUATION
Exams:There

will be two examinations. The first exam will be PRE MID TERM which will
cover HRM portion and the second exam will be End Term covering IR portion.

Group

Project: Each student will be assigned to a group consist of 5-9 students to complete
project. Please see information on pages 11-13 for project requirements. More details of this
group project report will be posted on and will also be discussed in class.

Participation:

Students are responsible for all materials covered and readings

assigned. Be prepared to answer certain questions that had been emphasized in prior classes
or from there adding assignments. Your performance and participation will then be used to
determine your participation mark (if any).
