Introduction:
The general trend of most job seekers is to respond to job ads in the newspapers or job postings on the
Internet. Or sometimes, when friends or relatives inform about vacancies, the job seeker submits his/her
résumé and waits for a response from the employer.
It has been stated that 80% of available jobs are not advertised. At first, this sounds strange, but, this is not
so. Very often, when the person making a decision about jobs, i.e. CEO, General Managers, etc. decide to
hire staff, they have to inform the head of human resources and that person has to put an ad in the media and
so on. In the meanwhile, if a prospective candidate takes the initiative to meet the CEO, General Manager,
etc. directly and presents himself/herself as a suitable candidate, chances are they could get hired even
before the job is advertised. This is the strategy on which I am making my presentation today.

The 14 Steps:
The steps I present to you in this publication will enable you to achieve a “foot in the door”. What does this
mean? It means that I am going to show you how to get an appointment with the decision maker, i.e. CEO,
Head of Department, General Manager, etc. before the job is advertised. This way, you get the opportunity to
make a first good impression. Thereby, the CEO does not have to spend resources, time and money from the
HR budget to recruit a candidate who has taken the initiative to do a “pre-emptive” strike in offering
his/candidacy.
Some of the steps I will be speaking about are:
° Research
° Sending an appropriate letter/email
° Preparing for the meeting with the CEO/Manager
° Conducting the meeting in a professional manner (this includes suitably dressed, excellent handshake,
good body language, high standard of dialogue and business discussion, etc.)
° Appropriate follow-up

Conclusion:
If the steps I recommend are properly followed consistently, you can be assured of getting an interview and a
job. Remember, persistence pays rewards. You cannot give up if you get a few rejections. If you have sent
hundreds of résumés and not got a job, would it hurt you to send 50 letters and get the job that you want?
Good luck on your job hunting!

14 Steps to getting an interview – and a job that you want!*

Step 1. Make a list of companies that you would like to work for and in the area that you would like to
reside. For example, if you feel that you would like to work for companies in Mississauga, make a
list of those companies.
Step 2. Go to the Mississauga Central Library on Burnhamthorpe Road (or any library in your area) and get
a directory of businesses. You can ask the librarian and they will assist you. From the directory find
out the following information on those companies whose list you made in Step 1 above and enter
them in your notebook or enter in a spreadsheet on your computer:
y The mailing address
y The name of the President or CEO or General Manager, etc. (i.e. the top executive of the
company)
y The email address of the Executive
y The Phone number of the Executive
Step 3. Research those companies on the Internet and find out as much information about the company
and the executives there. You will need this information to ask questions during your meeting with
the Executive.
Step 4. Prepare an introduction letter as per Appendix A (attached).
Step 5. After sending the above letter by email and by snail mail, wait for a few days and call up the
Executive’s office/secretary and draw his/her attention to your letter and request for a meeting.
Step 6. If you are not successful in speaking to the Executive directly, please inform the secretary that you
will be sending a follow up letter/email to the Executive because the later is waiting to hear from
you. At this point leave your telephone number with the secretary.
Step 7. If you do not hear back from the Executive, send another letter/email as per Appendix B.
Step 8. If you do not hear back, make a note in your diary and send another follow up after 15 days.
Step 9. Go to the next company on your list you gathered in Step 1 above and follow the same steps.
Step 10. When you do get an interview with the Executive (and you will definitely get an interview if you
persistently follow the above steps!), you will go for the meeting in proper attire, if possible a
business suit. Remember, first impressions count and since you are going on a “fact finding”
mission, you should dress up accordingly.
Step 11. Prepare a series of questions in advance based on the industry you have experience and practice
asking those questions in front of a mirror. One of your questions at the end should be
“Mr./Ms.____ based on what I have heard from you, would you like me to provide you a list of value
added services I could provide your organization to extend customer service and improve the
bottom line?”. If you prefer, offer to present the Executive with a proposal of what you have to offer
(which is an extension of your résumé).
Step 12. At the end of your meeting with the Executive do not forget to ask the Executive if he/she has any
questions for you. And remember to request for his/her business card and give yours as well!
Step 13. When you return home, do not forget to send an email and also call and thank the Executive for
sparing the time to grant you a meeting/interview and follow up by sending a proposal (see step 11
above).
Step 14. If you follow the above steps persistently, within two to three months you will be granted a proper
job interview with the company that you want.
Good luck on your job hunting. You will be successful - if you are persistent!!

Dear «Title» «LastName»:

Please do not regard this letter as a job application. I do not expect that you either have, or know of, an
opening for me at this time.

However, as «JobTitle» of «Company», I believe that you value the importance of initiative and how sharing
of information is part of value added services. I would very much appreciate the chance to meet with you to
obtain your opinion and advice on my best course of action.

I am a qualified and experienced ____________________________________ and have worked in the

___________ industry since ___________ years. I would like to find out more about your company and your
products/services and explain a little about my background.

It will come as no surprise to you that finding senior executives willing to spare fifteen minutes worth of advice
and constructive criticism is not easy. I am hoping that you are one of those who can still find the time to
render a little assistance and share information on the subject matter.

On the chance that you or your representative might be willing to speak to me for a few minutes, I will be
calling your office to set up an appointment. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Thank you kindly,

Yours truly,

Dear «Title» «LastName»:

Re: Gentle Reminder

May I draw your kind attention to my letter of ____________.

I had sent this letter to your personal attention to enable me to arrange a meeting with you to understand
more about your company and your products/services.

Since I did not hear back from you, I believe two things could have happened. Either you did not get my letter,
or you were busy to meet with me. If later is the case, I do understand. However, if you did not receive my
first letter, I am taking the opportunity of enclosing it herewith. In the event you are busy, I would appreciate if
you could direct me to your representative who would be able to meet with me and give me some information
about your company and your products/services.

On the chance that you or your representative might be willing to speak to me for a few minutes, I will be
calling your office to set up an appointment. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Thank you kindly,

Yours truly,
