Building Better Global Economic BRICs (Jim
ONeill)
As discussed in class and in Jim ONeil article on November 30 th
2001 he published an editorial with a new idea the BRICS. This
was a creation that emerging economies like, Brazil, Russia, India,
China and South Africa later on became part of the group, would be
powerful enough to change the global order. Later, on May 2008, the
BRICS get institutionalized now they have the first formal meeting
and after this every year they have a meeting. These countries are
from different continents and came together as a BRICS
accidentally; therefore they have many challenges, different
interests but, also similarities. The question is how they can
mutually cooperate to each other?
The first point according Andrei Korobkov, a professor of political
science at the Tennessee State University, migration is a common
challenge for these countries which could create a potential
cooperation in this field. All BRICS members are dealing with a large
scale migration of various types legal and illegal as well as both the
external and the internal ones. Russia ranks second in the world in
terms of a number of immigrants in its territory 1. According to South
Africa census in 2011 the immigrants represents 3.3 percent of the
population in the country 2. In India, the 2001 census has listed as
migrants 6.2 million people also India is the first in the number of its
natives living abroad3. In addition, Brazil has issued more than 56
thousand work visas for highly qualified professionals in 2011 4. On
October 2015 the BRICS had they The First Ministerial migration
meeting held in Sochi. According to Konstantin Romodanovsky, Head
of the Russian Federal Migration Service, there are no unified
recommendations for the migration policy for all countries. He
stated that Russia have importance to the employment of qualified
specialists.5
