One day, an Emishi1 village is endangered when

a Tatari Gami (Curse God) is approaching it. A

huge monster covered with black snakes/worms
like feelers, the Tatari Gami scorches everything
along its path.
Running on his loyal mount Yakkul, Ashitaka,
the future leader of the village, tries to stop the
monster. A village elder on the scene warns
Ashitaka not to touch the Tatari Gami, or he will
be cursed. Ashitaka tries to calm the Tatari Gami
down, but it keeps advancing towards the
village. When he sees three village girls being
attacked by the Tatari Gami, he makes up his
mind and shoots his arrow into its eye.
Ashitaka's arm gets caught by the Tatari Gami's
black feelers, but Ashitaka manages to shoot the
monster through its forehead.
"You filthy humans. Know my pain and
hatred."
With these last words, the Tatari Gami dies. The
black snakes of the Tatari Gami disappear, and a
huge boar appears underneath it. It then turns
into a skeleton before Ashitaka's eyes.
The black feelers have left a mark/scar on
Ashitaka's right arm. Hii-Sama, the village's old
medium, tells him and the villagers that the
mark is a curse from the Tatari Gami, and it will
kill Ashitaka eventually.
Showing a huge lead bullet which she found in
the Tatari Gami, she says that the pain and the
poison from the bullet drove a noble Boar God
insane and turned it into a Tatari Gami.
According to her, the boar comes from the land
of the West, something wrong is happening
there. She says that if Ashitaka goes to the West
and sees things through with his clear eyes, he
might be able find a way to cure the curse.
Ashitaka cuts his hair2, and leaves the village
with Yakkul as his only companion. Although it
is a taboo to see one leave the village, Kaya, one
of the village girls, sees him off, and gives him

monk, Jiko Bou. He thanks Ashitaka for saving
his life (he was one of the crowd who were
chased by Samurais at the mountain village).
When Ashitaka shows him the lead bullet from
the Tatari Gami, Joko Bou tells him about the
deep forest in the mountains of the West and the
great god of the forest, Shishi Gami, who
presides there.
The next morning, Ashitaka leaves for the West,
alone again.
3. Mountains near Tatara Ba, Western Japan
(Izumo?)
In the deep mountains of the West, Eboshi
Gozen (Lady Eboshi) and her men have built
their Tatara Ba (an iron forging encampment).
They cut trees for charcoal, and dig the earth for
iron sands. However, the mountains are
protected by animal gods, most notably Moro
the Wolf God, and Mononoke Hime, a human
girl who was raised by Moro. They and Eboshi's
camp are now engaged in a fierce battle for
survival.
In the rain, Eboshi and her men are transporting
food to Tatara Ba. A long train of cows carrying

everyone in Tatara Ba. She provides jobs and a
place to stay to social outcasts and women who
were sold to brothels. She does not fear any
taboo, giving jobs to women, who are
traditionally banned from the sacred iron
smelting process. Her men proudly say that she
doesn't even fear the Gods of the mountain, and
tell Ashitaka the story of how she killed a boar
god called Nago no Kami.

Hearing her laughs, Ashitaka is consumed by

everyone in Tatara Ba.
The leader of the lepers asks Ashitaka not to kill
Eboshi. He says that he can understand
Ashitaka's sorrow since he is also "cursed" by
the disease. But Eboshi is the only person who
treats them as human beings. She took them in
and takes care of them when everyone else is
afraid of their disease.
"Cursing the world, cursing other
people, and yet, I still long to live please forgive her for the sake of
such a fool as I."
As he says so, tears flow on his bandaged-up
face. Ashitaka falls silent.
Eboshi asks if Ashitaka is willing to stay at
Tatara Ba and work for her. Ashitaka asks her if
she is going to take even the forest of Shishi
Gami.
Eboshi: "Once we let the light into
the forest, and suppress the wolves,
this will become a rich country. And
Mononoke Hime will become
human again."
And she says that the Shishi Gami's blood is said
to cure any disease. She says that maybe it can
also cure Ashitaka's curse.
Ashitaka leaves the garden, and enters the main
building of the Tatara Ba. In the middle of the
building is a huge furnace, and women are

Ashitaka says good-bye to the women, saying
that there is someone he has to see. Next
moment, he senses that Mononoke Hime is
approaching Tatara Ba.
Under the moonlight, Mononoke Hime (San)
attacks Tatara Ba. Ashitaka tries to persuade her
to return to the forest, but she will not listen. She
attacks Ashitaka and her knife cuts his cheek.
Wearing a clay mask, and a knife made of a wolf
fang in her hand, San fights as if she is
possessed. She engages in a fierce one-on-one
fight with Eboshi.
But she is alone, and men and women of Tatara
Ba surround her as if she is a trapped animal.
They have lost their friends and loved ones
because of Moro and San, and they shout to kill
her.
As Ashitaka watches this, "snakes" appear on his
right arm. He approaches towards San and
Eboshi. Gonza tries to stop him, but Ashitaka
easily bends Gonza's long sword only with his
fingers, as if it was made of paper.
Pushing the crowd aside, Ashitaka cuts in
between San and Eboshi. With a superhuman
power, he separates them to stop the fight. The
"snakes" on his right arm are now running wild.
Ashitaka shows them to the people and says:
"Everyone, look at me! This is the
vengeance and hatred that grow
inside of us! It is a curse that rots the
flesh, and invites death. Don't let the
hatred possess you anymore!"

them. They say that they would eat a human, so
that they would gain the human's power to
defeat humans. They have been planting trees to
replenish the forests which humans have
destroyed, but to no avail. Humans keep clearing
the forests.
San tries to dissuade them, saying that eating a
human would accomplish nothing, but only
contaminate their blood. But the Shoujous say
that why should San care, she would be fine
even if all the forests are destroyed, since San is
a human.
Their words hurt San. The wolves will not take
such an insult towards their sister, and chase the
Shoujous away. San says that she is fine, and
tells the two wolves to return home. San will
deal with Ashitaka alone.
8. Shishi Gami's Pond
San puts unconscious Ashitaka on Yakkul, and
takes them to the pond where Ashitaka once
took a rest. As she walks in the pond, many
white bones break underneath her feet. She takes
Ashitaka to an island in the middle of the pond,
and lays him on the grass with his lower body
immersed in the water. Then, she takes the reins
off Yakkul, and tells it to go wherever it wants to
go. Yakkul just stands still as if to watch
Ashitaka, as San swims away.

Countless Kodamas appear on the treetops. They

all face the west, as if they are expecting
something. A half-transparent giant appears in
the western sky, and slowly moves around the
forest. The Kodamas rattle their necks as if to
greet it.
Looking at the giant from his hiding place in the
forest, Jiko Bou says to a hunter that it's
Didarabocchi, the form which Shishi Gami takes
during the night. He and the hunters have been
hiding in the forest, searching for Shishi Gami.
Didarabocchi approaches the pond, and then
transforms into Shishi Gami, a strange beast
with a human face.
In his deep sleep, Ashitaka is floating in the
water. He sees Shishi Gami approach. As it
walks, grass and flowers sprout and die instantly
underneath its hooves. As its muzzle touches
Ashitaka's wound, the blood flowing out of the
wound stops.
When Ashitaka wakes up, Shishi Gami is gone,
and Yakkul is looking into his face. San appears
and says that since Shishi Gami has decided to
let Ashitaka live, she will help him. Ashitaka
realizes that his chest wound has been healed.
But the next moment, he is driven into deep
despair, as he discovers that he still has the mark
on his right arm.
San puts a piece of dried meat into Ashitaka's
mouth and tells him to eat. But Ashitaka is too
weak to chew it. Watching him struggle, San
puts the meat in her mouth, chews it, and gives it
to Ashitaka, mouth to mouth. Tears fall off
Ashitaka's eyes.
A herd of boars appears. They say that they have
come from Chinzai1 to kill the humans and
protect the forest. They demand to know why
humans are present here at the Shishi Gami's
pond. Moro answers that San is her daughter,
and San answers that since Shishi Gami healed
Ashitaka, they will not kill Ashitaka.
San's answer angers the boars. Why did Shishi
Gami help a human, while it let Nago no Kami

Ashitaka killed him to protect his village. He
shows the mark on his right arm to the boars,
and says he had hoped that Shishi Gami would
cure this curse, but it didn't. It told Ashitaka to
live even though he has to suffer through till the
curse kills him.
A huge white boar appears from behind the
others. It is Okkotonushi, a 500 year old blind
Boar God. He sniffs Ashitaka's hand to learn
what happened to Nago, and thanks Ashitaka for
the information. It is sad that one of them had
become a Tatari Gami, he says.
Moro tells Okkotonushi that it's a foolish act to
take full offensive against humans. They would
just walk straight into the humans' trap. But
Okkotonushi says that even if all the boars must
die, he must make those humans suffer.
9. Tatara Ba
Meanwhile, Eboshi and her men and women
have been fighting against Samurais. Lord
Asano, who has mobilized these Samurais,
demands one half of Eboshi's iron, and Eboshi
has refused.
After Eboshi successfully drives back the
Samurais with her new improved Ishibiya, Jiko
Bou visits her. He tells her about the boars in the

humans. He demands her to fulfil her promise hunting Shishi Gami. The rulers of the country
want Shishi Gami's head, which is said to have
the power of eternal youth. Jiko Bou shows
Eboshi a letter from the Emperor.2
Eboshi isn't impressed and is rather reluctant.
She says that the power of the mountain gods
are ever weakening, as she and her men keep
clearing the forest. If they wait for a while more,
the gods will be totally powerless and they can
easily have Shishi Gami.
But Jiko Bou reminds her that the Shisho Ren,
the organization for which he is working, lent
her the Ishibiya Shuu so that she could build
Tatara Ba. It is her turn to keep her end of the
bargain.
Eboshi says that she will keep her promise. Jiko
Bou calls his men, the Karakasa Ren and
Jibashiri, into Tatara Ba. They and Eboshi's men
are going to go to the forest.
The women are worried about Eboshi, and ask
her to take them with her. But Eboshi tells them
that they have to stay at Tatara Ba to defend it.
She says that they have a lot more to fear from
humans, than from Mononokes. Not only the
Samurais are after Tatara Ba, but even the
Ishibiya Shuu could turn against them.
Ashitaka wakes up again to find himself lying in
a cave. San is sleeping beside him. He exits the
cave, and finds Moro there. Moro tells Ashitaka
that he has been unconscious for days, and San
has taken care of him.
Looking down at the beautiful forest under the
moonlight, Ashitaka asks Moro if there is no
longer a way to stop the war between humans
and the forest. Moro answers that humans have
already started moving in, and soon the forest
will become a battlefield. Ashitaka asks if Moro
intends to take San with her and let her be killed.
Moro: "San is a daughter of my clan.
She will live and die together with

He returns to the cave to find San awake. She
asks him if he could walk fine, and Ashitaka
thanks her and Shishi Gami. San smiles, and
goes back to sleep. Ashitaka watches her for a
while, and goes to sleep.
The next morning, when Ashitaka wakes up, San
and the wolves are already gone. His belongings
are neatly laid near him, together with some
wrapped food. Ashitaka understands that this is a
message from San for him to leave the
mountain.
Yakkul is waiting for him outside the cave.
When Ashitaka mounts Yakkul, one of Moro's
two sons appears, and leads them down the
mountain. At the end of the forest, Ashitaka
thanks him, and throws the Gyoku no Kogatana
(obsidian knife) to him, telling him to give it to
San.
11. On Top of A Mountain
San and Moro are looking down from a ridge,

San bids farewell to her mother. She is to join
the boars to serve as the eyes for blind
Okkotonushi, who can no longer depend on his
sense of smell either. Moro says that San can
choose another path, the path of going with
Ashitaka, but San has made up her mind.
The young wolf returns after seeing off
Ashitaka, and gives Ashitaka's knife to San. San
wears it as a necklace, and together with the two
young wolves, joins the boars to start a full force
offensive against the humans.
12. Tatara Ba
In the rain, Ashitaka walks down the mountain
on Yakkul. He hears a sound like distant thunder.
The rain stops and the mist over the lake clears
up. Ashitaka sees black smoke running up from
Tatara Ba. It is under siege from Samurais. The
main gate is already broken, and the bodies of
Tatara people are scattered all over.
Ashitaka breaks through the encirclement of
Samurais to approach Tatara Ba. Tatara people,
mostly women, are holding out inside the main
quarter of Tatara Ba. They tell Ashitaka that
Eboshi and her men went to the forest to fight
against the gods. Ashitaka tells them to hold on
until he brings Eboshi back.
Riding Yakkul, Ashitaka rushes back to the
forest, with Samurais after him. Ashitaka
manages to fend them off with his sword and
arrow, but Yakkul is hit by an arrow. Ashitaka
tells Yakkul to stay there and wait for him, but it
keeps following him with a hobbled leg.
13. Eboshi's Camp at the Foot of a Rocky
Mountain

Ashitaka reaches Eboshi's camp to find that it is

covered with a sea of bodies - of men and boars.
Ashitaka looks for San, but she seems to not be
among the dead. The surviving men tell
Ashitaka that the charging boars were blown up
by the exploding mines. Then, although men
were still on the ground, the Karakasa Ren threw
off bombs to kill the remaining boars, and killed
some of the Tatara men along with them.
Ashitaka tells the Tatara men that Tatara Ba is
under siege. They tell Ashitaka that Eboshi went
to the forest of Shishi Gami with Jiko Bou and
the Karakasa Ren, and Eboshi must have been
deceived by them. They ask Ashitaka to help
her.
Ashitaka finds one of Moro's sons still alive,
underneath the bodies of the boars. With help
from the men, Ashitaka pushes a boar's body
away to rescue the wolf. He asks the wolf to
take him to San, where Eboshi must also be.
Yakkul approaches the wolf, and they stare at
each other as if to communicate. Yakkul stays
behind, as Ashitaka and the wolf run into the
forest.
14. In the Forest
San, Okkotonushi, and another son of Moro are
hurrying to the Shishi Gami's pond.
Okkotonushi is badly hurt. Eboshi, Jiko Bou,
and their men are secretly following them.
Suddenly, a herd of boars appear. Okkotonushi
is in raptures, thinking that his boars have come
back to life. However, San realizes that they are
humans wearing boar's raw hides. The humans
have skinned the dead boars to fool
Okkotonushi, so that he would take them to
Shishi Gami!
San tries to tell Okkotonushi that this is a human
deception, but Okkotonushi, half mad, does not
listen to her. He lumbers towards the depths of
the forest, to Shishi Gami's pond.

San recobra a conscincia de encontrar-se

Okkkotonushi. Ela v que as antenas pretos
tambm esto a sair de si mesma.
"No, eu no quero ser um Tatari Gami!"
San grita, mas as antenas pretos manter
surgimento, a partir dela, a partir

Ashitaka encontra Eboshi e Jiko Bou

Eboshi agora, mas Jiko Bou sorri e diz que
matar um deus um crime terrvel, e ele
quer Eboshi para fazer o trabalho.
Lagoa de 15. Shishi Gami
Ashitaka chega na lagoa de Shishi Gami e
encontra Moro deitado na praia. Ela parece
estar morto. Ashitaka chama
desesperadamente por San.
Engolido pelas antenas pretas, San
fracamente ouve Ashitaka. "Ashitaka !!" Ela
chama seu nome.
Ashitaka fica chocada ao ver Tatari /
Okkotonushi saindo da floresta em direo
lagoa. Ele v a perna de San saindo das
antenas pretas. Ashitaka corre em direo
Okkotonushi para salv-la, rompendo o
cerco javalis "fantasmas". Os homens nas
peles de javali tentar mat-lo, mas por sua
vez atacado por dois lobos filhos de Moro.
Ashitaka salta para a massa negra de Tatari
/ Okkotonushi. Ashitaka e San tentar chegar
a um para o outro, mas Ashitaka jogado

Desparetely trying to calm Okkotonushi down,

San hears the howling of a wolf. She realizes
that it is a message from Ashitaka.
Okkotonushi finally loses all his strength and
collapses to the ground. The "ghost" boars
surround him. San tries to fend them off with her
spears, but there are too many of them.
From Okkotonushi's white body, black feelers
are coming out. "Please!! Don't turn into a Tatari
Gami!!" San desperately tries to clear the black
feelers off Okkotonushi, but they keep growing.
One of the men in the boar hides throws a stone
at her, knocking her unconscious.
On a cliff, Ashitaka hears the answering howling
from the forest. The wolf tells him that San is in
danger. They hurry down the cliff to the forest.
San regains consciousness to find herself caught
in the black feelers of Okkkotonushi. She sees
that the black feelers are also coming out of
herself.
"No! I don't want to be a Tatari
Gami!"
San screams, but the black feelers keep
sprouting, from her, from Okkotonushi. She is
swallowed up by the black mass of
Tatari/Okkotonushi.
Ashitaka finds Eboshi and Jiko Bou advancing
in the forest. He tells Eboshi to return to Tatara
Ba immediately, since it's under siege.
Eboshi: "So, you tell me to stop
killing Shishi Gami, and start killing
The Samurais instead?"
Ashitaka: "No. Isn't there any way
For both the forest and Tatara Ba to
live together?"
So saying, Ashitaka runs further into the forest,
looking for San.
Watching him go, Eboshi says that there is
nothing she can do for Tatara Ba right now, and

Ento Eboshi, escondendo-se atrs das
rvores, brotos Shishi Gami.
Na frente de Ashitaka, a bala passa pela
cabea de Shishi Gami. Ele perde o seu
equilbrio por um momento, mas continua
andando sobre a gua como se nada
tivesse acontecido. Ele passa por Ashitaka,
e abordagens Okkotonushi.
Shishi Gami beija o focinho do Okkotonushi.
Okkotonushi rapidamente perde seus sinais
vitais, e cai no cho. Shighi Gami tomou
sua vida. Moro, de p ao lado dele, entra
em colapso, ao mesmo tempo.
Shishi Gami olha a lua no cu, e comea a
transformar em Didarabocchi. Eboshi tenta
atirar-lo novamente. Ashitaka lana sua
espada, que chega Ishibiya de Eboshi e
obriga a falhar.
Shishi Gami vira e olha para Eboshi com os
seus olhos estranhos. Plantas brotam de
seu Ishibiya.
"Condene-!! Monstro !!"
Eboshi atira no Ishibiya novamente.
A bala atinge a meia-transformado Shishi
Gami em seu pescoo. O chefe de Shishi
Gami cai no cho.
O corpo decapitado de Shishi Gami se
transforma em lama e explode negro como
piche. Tudo o que toca morre. Grandes
rvores caem, e kodamas mortas caem
como neve.
Eboshi agarra a cabea de Shishi Gami, e
joga-o para Jiko Bou, que coloca-lo em um
recipiente e foge com seus homens.

Some of the men of the Karakasa Ren say to
Jiko Bou that they can get rid of Eboshi now, but
Jiko Bou grins and says that killing a god is a
terrible crime, and he wants Eboshi to do the
job.
15. Shishi Gami's Pond
Ashitaka arrives at Shishi Gami's pond and finds
Moro lying on the shore. She seems to be dead.
Ashitaka desperately calls for San.
Swallowed up by the black feelers, San faintly
hears Ashitaka. "Ashitaka!!" She calls out his
name.
Ashitaka is shocked to see Tatari/Okkotonushi
coming out of the forest towards the pond. He
sees San's leg sticking out of the black feelers.
Ashitaka dashes towards Okkotonushi to save
her, breaking through the encircling "ghost"
boars. The men in the boar hides try to kill him,
but in turn get attacked by Moro's two wolves
sons.
Ashitaka jumps into the black mass of
Tatari/Okkotonushi. Ashitaka and San try to
reach for each other, but Ashitaka is thrown into
the pond as San is swallowed more deeply into
Tatari/Okkotonushi.
Then, Moro opens her eyes and slowly stands
up, with her last strength which she has been
saving to kill Eboshi. Warning her sons not to go
near Tatari and get cursed, she approaches
Tatari/Okkotonushi.
"Give me back my daughter!!"
She holds San in her mouth and pulls her out of
the black feelers.
At the bottom of the pond, half-unconscious,
Ashitaka hears Moro:

Ashitaka e Gonza correr para Eboshi, e

San: "Cale a boca !! Eu sou um lobo !!!"
Cegado pela raiva, ela apunhala Ashitaka
no peito com a faca de pedra que ele lhe
deu. Mas Ashitaka leva-la em seus braos,
e prende-a com fora.
Ashitaka: ". Me desculpe, eu tentei impedilos ..."
Em uma voz dormente, San murmura:
"Est tudo acabado. Shishi Gami est
morto."
Mas Ashitaka responde:
"No, no , uma vez que ainda estamos
aqui."
16. Tatara Ba
O cerco foi temporariamente deixado como
o Samurais ter um descanso noite. No
interior do poro de Tatara Ba, os
sobreviventes tambm esto dormindo,
exausto. Toki est acordado, e ao lado dela
uma mulher leproso, que a fixao
Ishibiya de Toki. Eles falam, rir e
compartilhar alimentos, enquanto aguardam
a aurora.
Como o cu oriental comea a acender,
eles ouvem um som estranho vindo da
direo da floresta. Eles vem um gigante

"Ashitaka, can you save San?"

Ashitaka opens his eyes, and jumps out of the
pond. He receives San from Moro, and jumps
into the pond again. The water of the pond
cleans off the black feelers on them.
Shishi Gami appears on the other side of the
pond. It slowly walks on the water towards
Ashitaka.
Then Eboshi, hiding behind the trees, shoots
Shishi Gami.
In front of Ashitaka, the bullet passes
through Shishi Gami's head. It loses its
balance for a moment, but keeps walking on
the water as if nothing happened. It passes
by Ashitaka, and approaches Okkotonushi.
Shishi Gami kisses Okkotonushi's muzzle.
Okkotonushi quickly loses his vitals, and falls
onto the ground. Shighi Gami has taken his life.
Moro, standing next to him, collapses at the
same time.
Shishi Gami looks up the moon in the sky, and
starts transforming into Didarabocchi. Eboshi
tries to shoot it again. Ashitaka throws his
sword, which hits Eboshi's Ishibiya and forces it
to misfire.
Shishi Gami turns and looks at Eboshi with its
strange eyes. Plants sprout out of her Ishibiya.
"Damn You!! Monster!!"
Eboshi shoots the Ishibiya again.
The bullet hits the half-transformed Shishi Gami
in its neck. The head of Shishi Gami falls onto
the ground.
The headless body of Shishi Gami turns
into black tar-like slime and explodes.
Everything it touches dies. Great trees fall
down, and dead kodamas fall like snow.
Eboshi grabs Shishi Gami's head, and
throws it to Jiko Bou, who puts it in a
container and runs off with his men.

finalmente desiste, e abre o recipiente.
Ashitaka e San segurar a cabea para cima
de Shishi Gami. Lquido dourado escorre da
cabea, e deixa marcas vermelhas e pretas
em todo os corpos de Ashitaka e San.
Ignorando a dor da marca, Ashitaka grita
com Didarabocchi:
"Shishi Gami! Vamos voltar sua cabea. Por
favor, ter calma!"
Didarabocchi estica o pescoo em direo
sua cabea. Como Didarabocchi dobra-se
sobre eles, Ashitaka prende San
firmemente. E Ashitaka e San so envolto
em luz dourada ...
O corpo de Didarabocchi muda sua cor do
cinza escuro ao ouro, ento a sua habitual
azul. Depois de recuperar a sua cabea,
Didarabocchi est lentamente.
Ento, a primeira luz da manh o atinge.

Suddenly, Moro's head, detached from her body

by the black ooze, flies and bites off Eboshi's
left arm. Moro's head dives straight into the
slime, and dies.
Ashitaka and Gonza run to Eboshi, and attend
her wound. San demands Ashitaka to give
Eboshi to her so that she can tear this woman
apart. But Ashitaka says that Eboshi has been
punished enough.
The slime has now taken the shape of a headless
Didarabocchi. Searching for its head, it roams
around. The forest keeps dying at its touches.
Ashitaka asks San to help him to stop the
catastrophe.
Shuddering in rage and grief, San cries:
"No!! You too are on the side of the
humans! Take that woman and go
away!"
Ashitaka approaches her, with his arms open.
San: "Don't come near me!! I loathe
humans!"
Ashitaka: "I am a human. And you...
are a human, too."
San: "Shut up!! I'm a wolf!!!"
Blinded by rage, she stabs Ashitaka in chest with
the stone knife he gave her. But Ashitaka takes
her into his arms, and holds her tightly.
Ashitaka: "I'm sorry. I tried to stop
them..."
In a numb voice, San murmurs:
"It's all over. Shishi Gami is dead."
But Ashitaka answers:
"No it isn't, since we are still here."
16. Tatara Ba
The siege has temporally ceased as the Samurais

the survivors are also asleep, exhausted. Toki is

share food, as they await the dawn.
As the eastern sky begins to light up, they
hear a strange sound coming from the
direction of the forest. They see a headless
giant rising over the hill, and Samurais
running away for their lives as it approaches
Tatara Ba.
Ashitaka and San, riding the two wolves, run up
to Tatara Ba. Ashitaka shouts to them that they
should evacuate to the lake, as water seems to
slow the slime down.
As the people leave Tatara Ba, Didarabocchi
destroys it. Watching the main building burn,
Kouroku cries:
It's finished! We are through!"
Carrying a leper woman on her back, Toki
scolds him:
"As long as we are alive, we'll
manage!"
Ashitaka and San find Jiko Bou and his men,
carrying the container with the head in it.
Ashitaka tells Jiko Bou to return the head to
Shishi Gami, but Jiko Bou will not listen to him,
saying that it's human nature to desire
everything between heaven and earth. He says
that returning the head would have no effect
since Didarabocchi will die once it's exposed to
the morning sun.
Ashitaka says that returning the head is the least
that the humans should do, and tries to persuade
Jiko Bou. But Jiko Bou attacks Ashitaka.
While Ashitaka and San are fighting against Jiko
Bou and his men, the black slime of
Didarabocchi surrounds them. Jiko Bou finally
gives up, and opens the container.

Ashitaka and San hold Shishi Gami's head up.

Golden liquid drips down from the head, and
leaves red-black marks all over the bodies of
Ashitaka and San. Ignoring the pain from the
mark, Ashitaka shouts at Didarabocchi:
"Shishi Gami! We shall return
your head. Please be calm!"
Didarabocchi stretches its neck towards its head.
As Didarabocchi bends over them, Ashitaka
holds San tightly. And Ashitaka and San are
enveloped in golden light...
The body of Didarabocchi changes its color
from dark gray to gold, then its usual blue.
Having regained its head, Didarabocchi slowly
stands up.
Then, the first light of morning strikes it.
Didarabocchi slowly falls down on the lake. It
flashes with a bright blue-white light, and
disappears instantly.
As it disappears, a wind blows through. It blows
out the fire at Tatara Ba, and blows off
everything, such as buildings, trees, horses, and
Samurais.
After the wind, plants start sprouting all over.
The earth burned by Didarabocchi is now
covered entirely with green.
The Tatara people are watching this from the
lake, stupefied. A leper woman looks at her
hand, and realizes that the mark of her disease
has disappeared.
Nudged gently by Yakkul, Ashitaka wakes up to
find himself and San lying on a grassy plain. San
is still in his arms. Ashitaka wakes her up, and
shows her what Shishi Gami has done.
San: "Even if it comes back, this is
no longer Shishi Gami's forest.
Shishi Gami is dead..."
Ashitaka: "Shishi Gami cannot die,
since it's life itself. It has both life

and death. It told me to live..."

As he says so, Ashitaka looks at his right hand.
The mark has almost disappeared; only a light
scar is left.
Mounting one of the wolves, San says to
Ashitaka:
"I love you, Ashitaka. But I cannot forgive
humans."
Ashitaka smiles and says:
"That is all right. San, you in the
forest, and me in Tatara Ba, we shall
live on together. I will go see you,
with Yakkul."
San gives him a slight smile and heads for the
forest with the wolves.
Eboshi is surrounded by her people. In a
sardonic tone, she laughs at herself, for the
irony of being saved by wolves, carried out
of the forest on their backs. She asks her
people to bring Ashitaka to her, so that she
can thank him.
Then she smiles at her people, and says:
"We will start all over. Let's make
this village a better one."
In the plain where he has been hiding, Jiko Bou
laughs and says:
"I give up! You can't win against
fools."
At the shore of Shishi Gami's pond, great
dead trees look like white bones. On the
foot of them are sprouts, and a little
Kodama appears among them. As it clatters
its head, the sound echos through the
forest...
