CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY PROJECT

Social Responsibility is an ethical behavior or theory that an entity, be it any individual or an
organization or even a government, has an obligation to act to benefit society at large. To be
Socially Responsible means that people and organizations must behave ethically and with
sensitivity towards social, cultural, economic and environmental issues. Striving for social
responsibility helps individuals have a positive impact on development, business and society.
The concept of Social Responsibility adds the moral imperative of doing something to
improve society (Robbins-Coulter, 2005). This project is given to us by Christ University to
help us in developing this kind of a conscience towards the society.

1.2 TYPES OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

1.2.1 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Student social responsibility or SSR is the responsibility of every student for his/her actions.
It is morally binding on everyone to act in such a way that the people immediately around
them are not adversely affected. It is a commitment everyone has towards the society. SSR is
based on an individuals ethics. Instead of giving importance only to those areas where one
has material interests, the individual supports issues for philanthropic reasons. It forms the
base for CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility because if everyone in a business
organization does his/her bit the bigger things automatically fall into place.
ISR may be slightly impractical, especially in the modern competitive world, where everyone
works for self-interest, but it will succeed if we take decisions based on what will benefit a
large number of people and respect everyones fundamental rights. As individuals we can
make our small contributions to society by donating money to trustworthy NGOs, saving our
resources by reducing our consumption, E.g. by switching off lights or computers when not
in use.
In the present world, student social responsibility is being seen as a must thing and many
colleges and universities are developing innovative programs and workshops underlining
social and environmental issues which become a stage for social responsibility.

1.2.2 INDIVIDUAL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Individual Social Responsibility or ISR is something that makes an individual become
responsible of his/her actions that might have an effect on communities inside and outside
his/her immediate circle. Indian author, Arvind Devalia defines this as a golden rule as well
as "recognizing how your behavior affects others, and holding yourself accountable for your
actions." He goes on to say that the key question we must ask ourselves if we are going to
have a personal social responsibility is whether or not our actions will improve the lives of
others.
If every individual is socially responsible, problems like poverty, illiteracy, environmental
and other social issues can be dealt with in a very effective and efficient manner. Thus ISR is
a tool for social change, Powerful and Practical.

1.2.3 CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR is a Corporates initiative to assess and take
responsibility for the company's effects on the environment and impact on social welfare. The
term generally applies to company efforts that go beyond what may be required by regulators
or environmental protection groups. Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR has been defined
by Lord Holmes and Richard Watts in The World Business Council for Sustainable
Developments publication Making Good Business Sense as the continuing commitment
by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the
quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as the local community and society
at large"
The biggest and best example to show the meaning of CSR would be by mentioning the CSR
steps taken by the India headquartered Tata Group, who disbursed Rs. 500 crore ($80 million
at current exchange rates) to various causes and institutions. In dollar terms, this number
would have been higher if the rupee hadn't devalued as much since then. Tata Groups former
Chairman, Sri Ratan Naval Tata also proved to be an audacious philanthropist. Other CSR
focused companies include Johnsons and Johnsons, Nestle, Kraft, Disney, Procter and
Gamble, Coca Cola, Reliance, ITC, Hindustan Unilever etc.

How Individual Social Responsibility can achieve Corporate Social Responsibility?

Individual Social Responsibility may appear to be a new concept in relation to Corporate
Social Responsibility, but it is a concept as old as The Golden Rule Do unto others as
you would have them do unto you. ISR is at the roots of CSR, because a corporate
comprises of individuals and hence determines the social responsibility culture it creates.
This is the intermingled relationship between CSR and ISR. Individuals are becoming more
socially responsible and, in response to this Corporations and Companies need to become
more socially responsible to meet consumer demand.
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) states: In the wake of increasing
globalization, we have become increasingly conscious not only of what we buy, but also how
the goods and services we buy have been produced. Environmentally harmful production,
child labor, dangerous working environments and other inhumane conditions are examples of
issues being brought into the open. All companies and organizations aiming at long-term
profitability and credibility are starting to realize that they must act in accordance with norms
of right and wrong.
When people make purchasing decisions based on Individual social responsibility, it paves
the way for systemic change by rewarding corporate social responsibility. Because of the
power of individual social responsibility, many companies are now striving to demonstrate
their CSR by operating in ways that have a positive impact on society. Companies can do this
by utilizing environmentally-friendly practices, implementing fair and equitable labor
standards globally and sponsoring programs for charitable giving. Often, corporate social
responsibility is a direct result of customers exerting their personal social responsibility by
using their purchasing power in a way that promotes socially responsible practices. Therefore
we see that if ISR becomes a way of life, then CSR may become an automatic end result.

1.2.4 SERVICE LEARNING

Service learning is a method of teaching that combines formal instruction with a related
service in the community. It advocates the claim that learning is enhanced through direct
application in appropriate social contexts of principles and practices taught through formal
instruction concurrent with guided reflection of the students experiences. Service learning is
frequently implemented as youth service. As a teaching method, service learning is best
categorized as a form of experimental education. Specially, service learning integrates
meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich his learning
experience, teach civic responsibility, encourage lifelong civic engagement and strengthen
communities for the common good.

1.3 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND US

When we think of our roles and responsibilities, we often think and work towards the bigger
and larger roles as the head of a business, as the CEO of a company, as a community leader,
or a religious leader, or the head of a professional body, or even our role as a leading
professional in a particular field. We rarely think of the small roles and how we can excel in
these: of being a good family member, a good friend, a great neighbor, a good member of a
housing society, or just a good ethical citizen.
No one seems bothered about these roles any more, it is not considered admirable to be any
of these, no one will look up to you for fulfilling these roles in fact most people are either
forgetting or giving up these roles entirely. But these are the roles that are the most important
ones to fulfill as it is upon these roles that the bedrock of our society rests.
Each one of us, in the various spheres that we are in, must start some activity that benefits
others. The actions that are taken through such steps may appear trivial or small, but are
actually of great importance to the vast majority of people. Everyone needs something around
which their own actions and deeds can evolve; hence it is important that each one of us gets
started today.
Below are a few ways in which people in different spheres of life can help and prove to be
socially responsible.

Schools & Colleges

Encouraging and developing social responsibility programs among the students.

Offering space for training/ classes/ sports, etc.

Adopting a local garden.

Encourage volunteering amongst students and faculty for local causes.

Housing Societies

Suggesting solutions for local problems to government and media.

Maintaining nearby public spaces, including footpaths.

Helping to maintain a cleaner and greener neighborhood.

Shops (e.g.: Chemists)

Awareness posters of symptoms of different diseases.

Not selling or providing expired medicines to the customers.

Offering discounted medicines for poor patients.

Disposal of paper, plastic wastes properly.

Private Hospitals

Creating a Patients' Information Centre & Library.

Encouraging citizens to help accident victims by taking care of legal aspects of

accidents/ emergency cases.

Displaying a "Patients and Doctors Bill of Rights and Responsibilities" in the hospital

premises.

Proper segregation and disposal of medical wastes.

Movie Theatre/ Multiplex/ Malls

Screening of NGO films.

Screening special shows for underprivileged groups.

Adopting a nearby garden/ open space and maintaining it.

Providing handicap entrances and hospitality for them.

Petrol Pumps

Checking and offering tips to vehicle users.

Ensuring that Pollution under Control certificates are valid.

Promoting accident awareness and pedestrian safety.

Hotels and Restaurants

Donating excess food responsibly to NGOs/ citizens.

Composting of organic waste.

Media (TV, print, radio)

Show-casing profiles and achievements of NGOs/ citizens.

Spreading social service messages along with advertisements.

Dedicating a slot for social and developmental issues, and for citizens' dialogue/

feedback.
Often, our reactions to disappointing incidents in our lives result in negative or angry
thoughts about the situation and our helplessness. The recent Delhi gang rape incident is such
an example, where the angry reactions kept people charged and fired for some time, and also
achieved some quick initial results during this period. But constructive and developing
thoughts and actions are more sustaining, as these are like building blocks, upon which much
more can be built.

Every person needs a starting point; hence once we start doing such an activity that benefits
society, this enables other peoples' thoughts, ideas and actions to crystallize and build around
that. So even if we are only one shop that does not use plastic or one office that recycles all
its dry waste, this can help to start off a series of similar actions and initiatives around us.

1.4 OBJECTIVES OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Some of the main objectives of the Social Responsibility Project are as follows:To help us, as students realize the effects of our decisions and actions to the immediate
world.
To train professionals-to-be students to work without neglecting social, environmental or
ethical factors.
To strengthen existing networks, to share experiences and create new ones.
To try to be part of solutions, instead of acting individually in diagnosing and criticizing
reality without proposing anything to try to improve it.
To help students demonstrate an informed understanding of social responsibility relevant to
managing an organization domestically and internationally.
To help students apply critical, analytical and higher-order thinking skills when responding
to ethical dilemmas.
To help students demonstrate the ability to apply an informed understanding of social
responsibility to individual, organizational, and social issues.
To help students effectively communicate understanding and application of legal and ethical
concepts in a variety of formats.

new.
To prepare students to become competent and effective professionals, to develop social work

practice the changing nature of those contexts, the behavior found in systems, and the
dynamics of change.
To prepare social workers to engage in prevention activities that promotes wellbeing.
To add a new and wider dimension in helping the community and bring real positive change
throughout the world.
To understand our social obligations and fulfill them through aiming for sustainable
development and improvement in our societies.

To make ISR, CSR and every form of Social Responsibility a natural part of a students
philosophy and actions throughout their lives.
Equal consideration accorded to environmental, social and economic issues when pursuing
efforts aimed at achieving individual development and living standards.
To bring about correlation between development and environment for the purpose of
protecting ecosystems and management of natural resources which are considered as basic
and fundamental requirements for the fulfillment of the needs of human beings.

CHAPTER II
INTRODUCTION TO NGO

INTRODUCTION TO NGO

2.1 NGO (NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION)

In the midst of cut throat competition, the desire to excel and gain in terms of money, name
and fame, there is one section of the society that function not for profits but for benefiting the

NGO. A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is a nonprofit or voluntary organization
that may be affiliated with the government or a private sector firm and takes up social causes
which are plaguing the society we live in.
Over the years, the role of such nonprofit organizations has grown tremendously creating
awareness about these problems led by like-minded persons on a local, national or
international level, an NGO works towards reducing and slowly removing social problems
through well-defined and sustained humanitarian efforts. Some of the common issues that
NGOs deal with include woman empowerment, gender issues, female child feticide,
pollution, education, urban development, health, concerns of the less privileged, human
rights etc.
Individuals interested in associating themselves with social causes and helping out in their
own special way can volunteer with an NGO. Moreover, those who are looking to build a
career in this field can gain education and training in the field of social work and community
welfare. Anyone can join an NGO as a Volunteer, teacher, executive, mentor or manager etc.

them the gift of education.

2.4.3 VOLUNTEER
In order to understand the problems of the underprivileged, and to contribute to their
development this volunteer program has been established. SCEAD Foundation has lots of
opportunities for national and international volunteers.

2.5 ABOUT ST. GASPAR CHARITABLE & EDUCATIONAL TRUST

St. Gaspar Charitable & EducationalTrust was established in the year 2003 on April 23 by
Ms. Stephany BridgitTauro. She had a dream to serve her whole life for the poor people and
the old people. When she met Mother Teresa in Bombay, she was fully impressed by her
social work that she wanted to walk in the footsteps of Mother Teresa. So she planned to start
an orphanage but being a spinster it was very difficult for her to start the orphanage. At that
time Rev.Fr. JovitaD'souza helped, motivated and made her to open an orphanage. The
orphanage is run alone by her with the help of some funds from few donors. The main aim of
the trust is to provide education for all the children and take care of the orphans by providing
them food, shelter, education etc.
The trust is located in Dodanagamangala village, near Electronic City in Bangalore.

2.6 VARIOUS PROJECTS OF ST. GASPAR CHARITABLE & EDUCATIONAL

TRUST
2.6.1 ST. GASPAR HOME FOR THE AGED
The main aim of the project is to provide shelter for the old people. In this generation people
find it difficult to take care of their own parents and grandparents and some of them are left
alone in the streets. So, the main objective is to provide shelter, food, health, etc. to the old
people and take care of them. If someone finds it difficult to take care of their elders, they can

send them to the trust and they will take care of them and if someone finds any old people
who needs a place to stay, they can refer to them.

2.6.2ST. GASPAR ORPHANAGE

Orphan is not the right word to be used, the best word is "Angels" or Special Children. At
St. Gaspar Trust the children who are left out or thrown out of the society are well taken care
of. They believe that all are equal and the kids are so special that they provide them shelter,
food, education and take care of their medical and all other expenses. Everyone lives like a
family there.

2.6.3 ST. GASPAR SHELTER HOME FOR WOMEN

The founder being a women knows the difficulty of a women on how to survive in this world,
so she took an initiative to provide shelter and jobs for the women. They believe that men and
women must be treated equally in the society so they are provided with food, shelter, job, etc.
for women who don't have a place to stay and especially for women who are thrown out of
their houses by their husbands and they need a place to stay. Women are provided with
counselling and are encouraged to be strong to face the society and help them to be a good
citizen.

2.6.4 ST. GASPAR SCHOOL

Education is very important for every children's future. So there is a school for the kids and
also for the surrounding village area so that the best education can be provided for all the
kids. If a parents financial background is really poor and they need education for their
children, then they are provided with free education or with a lower price. At present in the
nearby village area they are providing education for all the kids at a minimal fee. They do
have hostel facilities for the children's.

2.6.5ST. GASPAR DAY CARE CENTRE

children on their behalf and try to teach th

CHAPTER IV
LEARNING OUTCOME

LEARNING OUTCOME

4.1 PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Pranjal Agrawal (1411936)

I have had the delight of working with an excellent NGO named SCEAD (Space for Children
in Education, Art and Development). This is a wonderful group of people headed by Mr. Siju
Daniel whose mission is to promote collective action in protecting the rights of the children.
SCEAD also propagates the need for eradicating child labor and upliftment of orphans, street
children, and poor children.
To make the most of our Social Responsibility Project, the work was planned and divided
accordingly.

The most challenging part was of course managing the kids. It was a task to go around the
home and gather the kids. Then they were to be held in a room by one volunteer, while the
other went around looking for some more. While some of them were very enthusiastic to
learn, others considered themselves just too cool to stay put. One very typical scene would be
that two kids would start fighting and while I made efforts to stop them, others would become
spectators. But When I would manage to get the two kids to negotiate, I would look up only
to find the room empty.
Childhood is incomplete without those stupid fights. And when you have a space to share
with your peers as well as seniors, tables are bound to be in pieces. I was once suggested by a
kid to stay over to experience real politics.
Then there were some moments where I became a student. I was given a lecture on HinduMuslim unity and how politicians are disrupting it. In fact, politics was their favorite topic.

But of course, the best part about the whole experience was the love and respect that they
would express. They would always be so excited to see us coming. They would always force
us to eat with them. After completing our voluntership, we had been to the home once. And
the naughtiest of them all was the happiest to see us again. That paid us off.

Thank you all the professors and everyone being involved in giving us such an opportunity to
go out of the real traffic world and some time off with these kids. Truly. It was amazing.

My volunteering at SCEAD taught me many things like

Teaching is not an easy job; you need a lot of patience for it.

To see a person smile, and to know you contribute something for that smile, gives
ultimate joy and internal satisfaction.

Lastly, not everything is done to get returns; social work and charity has value.

4.2 OBSERVATIONS
1. The school has good infrastructure but a lot of things a still lacking. Many classrooms do
not have fans.
2. The school has 13 teachers, all of whom are quite well trained.
3. The students speak good English.
4. The students are well mannered.
5. The school is planning to buy the land and improve its infrastructure.
6. The orphanage is well managed.
7. The orphanage also has many problems, the space is very limited for the children.
8. The trust is planning to shift the orphanage away from the school. This would reduce the
water and sanitation problems.
9. The school has no washroom facilities for male students.

4.3 SUGGESTIONS
1. The school should start mid-day meals for students.
2. The school should provide students with proper toilets.
3. It should increase its association with organizations such as SCEAD, so that more
volunteers visit the school. By this the students would get more exposure and the trust might
get some funds to improvise their infrastructure.

CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION

CONCLUSION

This project was a very good learning experience for all of us. We understood the importance
of social responsibility as a whole towards establishing a happy planet. It is only through this
project that we got an exposure of the people in the slums live.We got an opportunity to be
with the amazing children of St. Gaspar School and Orphanage. It was only through this
project that we could actually interact with those kids and could share our experience with
them.

Lets all do something good and spread it, so that people may imitate it. Let us help by
conducting classes and give people the education who cant afford them. Create awareness
about such initiatives, so that it can flourish. Sponsor an underprivileged child so that he
could grow in his life. By this you are actually contributing for the development of the nation.

Finally we would like to thank Christ University and SCEAD Foundation for providing us
with this wonderful opportunity. We would also like to extend our thanks to St. Gaspar Trust.
