DESCRIPTION

2.1

GENERAL

GENERAL
The ALSTOM high speed power earthing switch of the series STR are designed to
fault to earth one high voltage phase by a fast closing of the earthing blade. The
closing energy is given by a coil that it is charged during the opening operation
and released by coil.
This switch is operated by a special manual mechanism that opens the earthing
blade and charge the closing spring in the same time.
Operating sequence:
Earthing blade in open position: closing spring charged and ready to close.
Closing impulse (local or remote): earthing blade fast closing.
An electrical impulse (local or remote) energizes the releasing coil (2.8 Fig. 2A)
that, acting on the locking levers (2.10 Fig. 2A), unlock the locking cam (2.9
Fig. 2A) and get free the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2). At this point the energy of
the closing spring (2.6 Fig. 2A) quickly closes the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2)
and makes the male mobile contact (2.2 Fig. 2) to penetrate into the fingers of
the fixed female contact (3.2 Fig. 2). The fixed contact assembly is equipped
with a shock absorber (3.5 Fig. 3) that stop the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2)
absorbing the energy at the end of its travel.
Earthing blade in closed position: closing spring unloaded.
Manual operation (only local) to open the earthing switch and to charge the
closing spring.
During the manual opening operation, the vertical drive shaft turn
counterclockwise by 135 and move the operating lever (5.7 Fig. 2A) by
means of an angular reduction gear. The operating lever (5.7 Fig. 2A) acts on
the charging lever (2.7 Fig. 2A) which is connected to the earthing blade (2.1
Fig. 2), to the closing spring (2.6 Fig. 2A) and to the locking cam (2.9 Fig. 2A).
During this operation the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2) turns about 90 from the
fully closed position to the fully open position, the closing spring (2.6 Fig. 2A) is
charged and the locking cam (2.9 Fig. 2A) is locked by a pin (2.11 Fig. 2A) of
the locking lever (2.10 Fig. 2A). At this point the high speed power earthing
switch is restored and ready to close.

Important

eeIM-template-02-2011.dot

PACKAGING AND SHIPMENT

3.

PACKAGING AND SHIPMENT

All the items of the equipment are shipped in cases (crates), which must be
handled with care in accordance with the standard symbols on the sides of the
containers.

3.1

TYPES OF PACKAGES
Shipment packaging is designed to fully protect the shipping units against
mechanical damage and against weather during transportation, unloading and
handling on site. It ensures that the product is not damaged and that all quality
features, that are guaranteed and tested in all stages of production, remain
unaltered.

3.1.1

Shipping cases
The shipping cases are strong, plywood-covered wooden crates, covered on the
sides and reinforced internally with wooden boards. Special-shape wood-pieces
are fastened to the bottom of the crates, and if needed to the sides too, in order to
hold the content fast; if needed the shaped pieces are lined with foam to damp
shocks to the content.
If needed, the content is wrapped in plastic film or contained in special boxes
placed on the bottom of the crate.
In order to ensure adequate ventilation, the shipping cases are equipped with
weatherproof openings.

3.2

SHIPPING UNITS
The subdivision of each switchgear into shipping units is devised to speed up the
installation on site and simplify the handling of the shipping units.

Important

The subdivision is detailed in the Packing List and reported in the

relevant DIN.
Refer to the DIN for the identification of the parts also.

INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT

6.

INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT

6.1

CONDITIONS AND PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS BEFORE INSTALLATION

a)

To install correctly the switchgears, the connection dimensions of building

works and steel works must comply with the specific DIN- installation
drawings of your order.

b)

In addition, consult the specific instructions manuals of the drive D-... of your
order.

c)

Screws, bolts and nuts must be tightened with a torque wrench with the
torque values of the table of Attachment "B".

d)

Prepare and treat the permanent contact surfaces of live parts, through which
current will flow (e.g. the contact surface between the terminal connection
pad or shank and the clamp of the line conductor) as follows:
Wipe off any trace of grease from the contact surfaces with non-abrasive
solvent. If the surfaces are oxidized, clean them up with a steel brush or
fine abrasive paper;
Cover them immediately with antioxidant paste;
Connect the surfaces as soon as possible.

e)

For the switch of type STR, install the units in the following sequence:
complete unit of the single-pole switch;
drive of the disconnector;
vertical drive shaft,

6.2

INSTALLATION OF THE STR EARTHING SWITCH

6.2.1

Single-pole disconnector unit (Fig. 1)

Lift, as shown in Figure A, the full assembled single-pole switch unit and, after
checking that the arrangement of the equipment is correct, in accordance with the
specific DIN-. installation drawing, approach the fixed base (5.0 Fig. 1) to the
support structure, with the fastening holes aligned.
Fasten temporarily the base (5.0 Fig. 1) to the support structure.
Release the lifting apparatus.
With the spirit level check that the full assembled single-pole switch unit is vertical
in two perpendicular directions. If needed shim with the specific C-washers on the
bolts, between the support structure and the fixed the base, until the unit is
adequately vertical.

6.2.2

Drive of the disconnector (Fig. 1, 7)

Important

Danger

Before carrying out the installation, check that the serial

number of the drive is the same as the serial number of the
switchgear.
Concerning the lifting of the drive, see the instruction manual
on the specific installation and maintenance procedures for the
device.

Lift the drive and take the back of the device toward the support structure and take
care that the holes (7.11 Fig. 7) on the drive match those on the structure. Install
and fasten temporarily the bolts; do not tighten them.
Release the lifting apparatus.
Check also that the drive is horizontal in two perpendicular directions, if needed
shim the fastening connections.
If needed, loosen the bolts that fasten the drive to the structure, raise or lower the
drive and then tighten the bolts again, in order to get - when the adjustment is
complete - the exact dimensions shown in the specific DIN- installation drawing.
6.2.3

Vertical drive shaft (Fig. 1, 5, 5A, 7)

Set by manual the earthing blade fully open position.

Caution

In the open position the closing spring is charged, so

earthing blade is ready to fast close. Do not tamper with
opening/recharging lever, keep away your hands from
mechanism of the live part and stay away from the path of
mobile arm.

the
the
the
the

Insert the crank in the manual mechanism and turning counterclockwise; the
output clamp (7.12 Fig. 7) will rotate about 135 until the fully charged position
touching the end stop.

Important

In order to ensure the best grip, before installing the drive

shaft of the switchgear, polish with abrasive paper the lower
part of the shaft for a length of about 150 mm.
Check also that the internal surface of the clamp is free from
any trace of grease or other impurities.

Connect the upper side of the vertical drive shaft (7.8 Fig. 5) to the angular
reduction gear (5.8 Fig. 5) by the hub (5.9 Fig. 5) and insert the lower end of the
vertical drive shaft (7.8 Fig. 5) into the clamp (7.12 Fig. 7) of the drive.
Set the operating lever (5.7 Fig. 5) with an angle of about 35-45, as indicated in
Figure 2A. In that position the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2) will move some degree to
the open direction but the operating lever will be always in touch with the charging
lever (2.7 Fig. 2A).
Set by manual operation the manual mechanism in the restore position by turning
clockwise the crank until the restore position. In this position the operating lever
(5.7 Fig. 5) must be horizontal, as shown in Figure 2A.

6.
INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT

Tighten the clamp (7.12 Fig. 7) with the screws (7.10 Fig. 7) - with a torque of
around 80 Nm - to lock the shaft. In order to assist in this operation, apply some
normal grease on the bolts.
Now the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2) is ready to close, the closing spring (2.6 Fig. 2)
is charged and the mechanism is in the restore position.
Only for set-up operations, in case of emergency:

Important

The operation of manual closing by pushing directly the pin of

the spring coil can be done only in absence of wire connections
in the live part and in the auxiliaries.

By pushing the rod of the releasing coil (2.8 Fig. 2A), the earthing blade (2.1 Pc. 2)
will rapidly close, than turning counterclockwise the crank open the earthing blade.
During this operation, check that the operating lever (5.7 Fig. 2A) engages the
charging lever (2.7 Fig. 2A) and fully opens the earthing blade (2.1 Fig. 2). Once
touched the end stop, turn clockwise the crank until the neutral position is reached.
If this operation is done manually, rotate the operating mechanism until the rest
position.
If the operation is done in local or remote, after a rotation of 360 the operating
mechanism will stop in the rest position.
If the operating mechanism isnt stopped in the rest position, the STR hasnt the
consensus for closing.
6.3

ADJUSTMENT OF THE STR EARTHING SWITCH

The high speed power earthing blade is full assembled and adjusted in the work
shop. Usually no more adjustments are needed in site with the exception of
following ones described below.
Check that the mobile arcing contact (2.4 Fig. 3) does not hard touch the fixed
arcing contact (3.3 Fig. 3). During the closing operation, the mobile arcing contact
(2.4 Fig. 3) must creep close to the lower surface of the fixed arcing contact (3.3
Fig. 3) enough to guarantee a good electrical contact.
To ensure this situation, bend the fixed arcing contact (3.3 Fig. 3); down if its too
far or up if it hard touches the mobile arcing contact (2.4 Fig. 3).

MAINTENANCE PLAN

8.

MAINTENANCE PLAN
The switchgears do not require special maintenance. We recommend, however, in
order to ensure the correct operation of the equipment, to carry out routine checks
and maintenance actions, especially on the component parts which are most
sensitive or subject to wear.
The frequency of checks and maintenance actions depends on the number of
operations (1.000, 2.000, 3000 or 10.000) that have been guaranteed for the
equipment supplied.
In case of coastal and other corrosive and contaminated environments, every two
years it is mandatory to check and eventually to restore the grease on the
exposed parts.
In order to keep the guarantee of the disconnector in force, routine checks and
maintenance operations must comply with the following table.
