USING A 4-MM THICK COPYBOARD GLASS

Reason

The current 3-mm thick copyboard glass will be replaced with a 4mm copyboard glass to prevent
cracking of the glass.

Details

<Phenomenon>
When a thick original (e.g., book) is placed on the copyboard glass and copied with the RDF over it,
the copyboard glass can at times develop cracks.
<Cause>
When the RDF is brought down, its supports are designed to rise to distribute the force imposed on the
copyboard glass. An excess of force applied on the RDF, however, can cancel this design
consideration, causing cracks.
<Factory measure>
1. The current 3-mm copyboard is replaced with a 4-mm thick copyboard. To accommodate the
change, its associated parts (e.g., right glass retainer) will be raised by 1 mm.
2. A bearing will be added to the RDF mount.
3. A paper guide spacer and a left glass retainer for an RDF will be shipped in the same box as the
unit. (The parts are to be used when installing the RDF.)
4. The focal distance of the lens is changed.

Servicing

: If a crack has developed in the field in the copyboard glass (3 mm thick), replace the glass with a 4-mm
thick copyboard glass using the countermeasure kit which consists of the following ten parts. (Note
that a depending on the machine models, different copyboard glass is used.)

Mounting the Paper Guide Spacer

1. Remove the paper guide from the machine.
2. Peel the backing paper from the spacer.
3. Attach the spacer to the back of the paper guide.
4. Mount the paper guide to the machine.
