Do you have your own stats on Eircode?

The Department does not keep figures in relation to

the volume of mail that contain Eircodes. However, we
understand from An Post that the volume is low
relative to total mail volumes, which is not surprising
at this early stage. Mail volumes are only part of the
take up story. What is equally important is online
usage and usage for location based services.
Negotiations with Google and the SatNav companies
are at an advanced stage. Businesses are also
requesting Eircodes on websites. The Eircode finder
on average has 20,000 daily hits which demonstrates
that the codes are being used.
Can you tell me how it works?
The Eircode is a unique code, which enables the user
to identify and locate all individual addresses. This is
of particular value in rural Ireland where a number of
buildings often share the same address. The Eircode,
in itself, is not intended to locate any address for mail
delivery purposes. It must be used in conjunction with
the form of address normally used by the householder.
The first three digits identify the geographical area in
which the address is located, and the last four digits
identify the precise individual address.
What work was done between the Dept and An
Post in advance of its launch?
An Post were actively involved in every stage of the
Eircode of the project, from design through to
dissemination. An Posts sortation systems were
upgraded in time for launch and e delivery of postcode
letter was managed by them. An Post has committed
to using Eircodes.

From my analysis, I think I'm correct in saying

most Government departments and bodies don't
currently use Eircode. Why not? Are there plans
to change this?
Early on in the development of the Eircode, the
Department recognised the need for the encoding of
large public sector customer facing databases to
encourage use of the Eircodes by the public sector and
to allow the public to become familiar with the codes
by seeing them being used by the bodies such as the
D/SP, motor tax, in correspondence, online etc. and
also to increase uptake.
As part of this process over 80 million public service
records were encoded with the Eircode.
Public Sector Bodies (PSBs) are fully supporting the
introduction of Eircodes and since the launch several
of them have started using Eircodes in customer
engagement and service provision and this process
will continue over the coming months.
Below are examples of some of the correspondence
that has been generated by PSBs which have Eircodes
incorporated into them:

The Department of Social Protection sends

out approximately 400,000 items of mail with
an Eircode each month.

The Department of Agriculture have added

Eircodes to over 21,000 of their customer records.

The Revenue Commissioners have

despatched Eircoded letters to over a million
addresses.

Electric Ireland bills will contain Eircodes

from next month.

Passport card online application forms
request Eircode.

The online motor tax system went live with

Eircode on last week.

The 2016 Census form will contain Eircodes.

The National Ambulance Service will start

using eircodes before the end of the month.
