The College

PSG College of Technology, a premier

institution for engineering education in India,
started in 1951 has developed into a centre for
advanced studies and research in several areas
of engineering, technology, applied sciences and
management. The college is autonomous since
1978 and is certificated by ISO. The
laboratories, workshops and library of the
college are well equipped with modern facilities
suitable for learning and research.

Facilities
In addition to the conventional laboratories there
are specialized laboratories in virtual reality,
CNC, rapid prototyping and computer vision.

Workshop on Manufacturing
Challenges in Composites

Production Engineering Department

As manufacturing activities play a major role in
the development of the country, PSG College of
Technology envisaged the need for trained
manpower in manufacturing and thus the
undergraduate programme in Production
Engineering was started in the year 1975.
Subsequently, department grew in several
dimensions of academic excellence with time.
The programme has been accredited for five
years, in the year 2012, which is the best
ranking offered for a BE programme by
National Board of Accreditation (NBA),
maintaining its previous accreditation status. All
the laboratories of the department are approved
for carrying out research, leading to Ph.D
Degree (full time and part time) by Anna
University, Chennai. The department offers
consultancy in manufacturing processes, design
and testing a range of products.

DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCTION
ENGINEERING
PSG COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY
COIMBATORE- 641 004

Objectives
The objective of the workshop is to establish a
platform for efficient exchange of knowledge on
the issues and demands in design and
manufacturing of composites among industrial
experts, academicians, researchers and end
users.

About the workshop

Lightweight, high-strength, high stiffness and
low-cost composite materials have been
identified as a key cross-cutting technology for
overall development of manufacturing industries
especially automotive, aerospace, defense,
construction and energy sectors. Improvements
and innovation in manufacturing and assembly
techniques for composite materials and
structures are needed to meet cost and stringent
performance targets to enable wider adoption
across multiple industries. Addressing these
technical challenges may enable Indian
manufacturers to capture a larger market share
of the world and could support domestic
manufacturing demands.
Improving the manufacturing speed and quality
and reducing their manufacturing costs could
accelerate their use in automotive, wind,
compressed gas storage and other clean energy
and industrial applications.
The workshop will foster an exchange of
information on technical issues and challenges
in design and manufacturing related to
achieving low-cost composites and impacting
Indian manufacturing competitiveness in
various fields with main emphasis on aerospace
industries. The workshop includes presentations
by eminent personalities who have rich
experience in the fields of composites and shall
facilitate breakout sessions to gather input from
participants. Over 125 participants representing
academic institutions, national laboratories,
automotive, aircraft, aerospace industries, etc.
are expected.

Topics covered
o Design, modeling, simulations, optimization
(including tooling design) of composites
o Sensing and measurement
o 3D Composites
o Nano-Composites
Speakers
1. Dr. R.K. Gupta,
Advanced System Lab, DRDL.
2. Dr. Jamal Ahmad,
The Petroleum Institute, UAE.
3. Dr. Redouane Zitoune,
University of Paul Sabatier, France.
4. Dr.K.R.Ravi,
PSG Institute of Advanced Studies.
