Consultant: Hamilton district

stability a plus for leader search
The stability of leadership in the
Hamilton School District is a plus as the
district undertakes the search for its next
superintendent, a consultant who specializes in superintendent searches told the
School Board Jan. 5.
The board approved a contract with
James Rickabaugh to have him serve as a
"coach" during the superintendent search
process. Current Superintendent Kathleen
Cooke will be retiring at the end of the
current school year after serving as superintendent since 1993.
"The longevity that Dr. Cooke has had
here sells well," Rickabaugh told the
board. "You're a place with some stability,
you're a place that has its act together.
That's very attractive for skilled leaders
who want to come, be able to put down
roots and really engage."
Rickabaugh was asked by board member Gerald Schmitz about the pool of
potential candidates. Rickabaugh said
there have been a number of superintendents in the region retiring in recent years
and new people taking their places.
"There are a number of superintendents who have been in their positions for
three or four years who may be looking for

IN THIS
ISSUE...

an opportunity like this. There may be

some people who haven't been in their
position long but see this as the opportunity of a lifetime," Rickabaugh said.
He added there is also a very good pool
of talented and bright administrators who
aspire to be superintendents. He noted
that when Cooke was hired she did not
have previous experience as a superintendent.
Rickabaugh told the board that while
it is hiring for next year, "you're also hiring for 20,21,24,25. Experience is something you gain over time."
"I would just say there are number of
very talented people in the region who are
ready for superintendency in the area who
-- given this position -- may say, 'I'd really
like that opportunity,' and decide to
apply," Rickabaugh said.
Schmitz -- who will be retiring from
the board after serving for 40 years -noted that 24 years ago the Hamilton district "was in turmoil" an trying to transition to move forward.
"The people that are going to apply see
us completely different than it was back
then," Schmitz said.

Were just a few weeks away from the first caucuses and primaries, so presidential election season is in full swing. As a voter, you may be keenly interested
in the election process. But as an investor, should you be concerned?
If you take a look back, you might be somewhat encouraged over the prospects
of the financial markets this year. In the last 12 presidential election years, the
Dow Jones Industrial Average has been up nine times and down just three. So,
election years must be good for the financial markets, right?
Not necessarily. In every year, the markets are influenced by a variety of factors: interest rates, inflation, corporate profits, geopolitical events, economic
growth, even the weather. And its safe to say that 2016 will be no different. At
this early stage of the year, one could say that some of these factors, such as continued low interest rates and a reasonably strong economy, might bode well for
investors. But theres a lot of 2016 ahead of us and its notoriously difficult for
anybody, even so-called experts, to accurately predict the markets performance
over a relatively short time, such as a year.
Still, the markets history of pretty good results in presidential election years
may not be entirely random. For one thing, the White House is never the only
office being contested; elections are also held for every congressional district and
many seats in the Senate. Consequently, during these election years, campaigning often takes precedence over legislating. This legislative inactivity tends to be
welcomed by the financial markets, which generally dislike surprises, big changes
and new directions.
However, you cant really count on past trends to provide a certain roadmap
for the year ahead, in terms of the performance of the financial markets. As mentioned above, many factors influence this performance, and at this early stage in
the year, we just cant predict which of these factors will take precedence.
So, instead of worrying about things you cant control, focus on those that you
can. For starters, review your investment mix. Does it still properly reflect your
goals, risk tolerance and time horizon? Over time, even if you havent made
many changes to your portfolio, it can become unbalanced. For example, if
you own some stocks that have increased greatly in value over the years, these
stocks may now be taking up a larger percentage of your holdings than you had
intended, bringing with them a higher degree of risk. Consequently, you might
want to consider selling off some of these stocks and using the proceeds to fill in
other gaps in your portfolio.
On the other hand, if you think your mix of investments is not providing you
with the returns you need to help make progress toward your long-term objectives, you may need to add some vehicles that can provide you with more growth
potential. After all, its 2016 now, so whatever your age, you are another year
closer to retirement. Will this year look like past presidential election years, as
far as good returns from the stock market? No one can say for sure. But if you
vote for smart investment moves, you wont be sorry.

a little mouthy when I am excited so any children in the home should
be over 6 years and I also need to work on "four on the floor". I know manners are important for
a guy my size, about 50 pounds. Since I am a young guy I need lots of exercise to burn off my
puppy energy. I am good with dogs but they must be very tolerant and playful because I am young
and want to play A LOT. They say I show potential with cats so if my new home has cats they
would need to be very tolerant and I would need to be re-tested. During my first test I was a little
hyper - I just think everyone wants to play with me. One thing I would love for my family to help
me with is overcoming my toenail terror. I just need to understand that having my paws touched
or held brings great things - like treats. I truly enjoy treats and take them very gently. I would also
appreciate my family helping me to eat a bit slower and not gobble my food. Now that I am off

Village of Sussex historian recounts his Honor Flight experience

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER

PHOTO NIKKI ACKERMAN

Fred Keller describes his experiences on

an Honor Flight trip during a presentation at the Paulilne Haass Public Library
in Sussex Jan. 12.

Village of Sussex historian Fred

Keller took community members on a
journey through his time of service during the Korean War and his recent
Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C.
during a program at the Pauline Haass
Public Library Jan. 12.
Now 84 years old, Keller, with his
sharp memory and wit, spent an hour
and a half sharing amusing anecdotes
from more than six decades ago.
A college basketball player at the
time of the war, Keller volunteered for
service with the thought of They are
breathing down my neck, its only a
matter of time, lets get it over with
and soon headed to Fort Riley in Kansas
for basic training.
That was probably the worst eight
weeks of my life, but I lived through
it, he said.
The 6-foot-five-inch Keller had graduated from Marquette High School and
earned a scholarship to play basketball
at Marquette University, but ended up
at Carroll College due to a change of
coaches. After his sophomore year,
Keller decided to volunteer for the
draft. Because he was educated and did
well on his tests, he was sent to Europe
rather than infantry in Korea and was
then assigned to Occupied Germany as a
military police officer. Being sent to
Germany--especially with four years of
the language under his belt--made

Keller feel like I had hit the jackpot.

Keller said his time in Germany was
eventful with many colorful tales,
including one time he was summoned to
an incident in a nearby garden. We go
and there are a whole bunch of German
police officers with a French soldier and
a German girl yelling at the top of her
lungs. Well, it turns out this French soldier had wined and dined this girl only
to find out she was a he.
Keller recounted how there would
often be alerts to head to France and
being ready to go at a moments notice
was crucial. One time we had just come
back from France and there was an
alert, but we thought they were just
trying to keep us on our toes. So this
one corporal gets his bag searched and
it turns out it was stuffed with laundry
and newspaper to make it look full.
Well, they told him, Youre going to
Francewith that bag!
I personally went to France about
eight times, he added.
Talking about drinking 180-proof
white lightening and the time he and
his fellow soldiers woke up covered in
lice and had to douse themselves with
DDT (And Im still here! he added with
a laugh), Keller recalled his time overseas as an overall positive experience.
When he returned from Europe,
Keller felt welcomed back, he said,
and returned to work the next day. He
began collecting pieces of history, eventually becoming the curator of the

Sussex/Lisbon
Historical
Society
Museum. He raised his family and
worked for many years as a firefighter
in the village. He has returned to
Europe twice since 1954.
In June 2015, Keller was one of 140
World War II and Korean War veterans
who flew to Washington D.C. as part of
the Honor Flight program, an experience he described as unforgettable.
I didnt know they could pack so
much into one day, he said. They gave
us four bag lunches and water throughout the day, and we ended up in
Arlington Cemetery for the Changing of
the Guard. Then on the flight back, as
we were flying over Detroit, they yelled,
Mail call! and I was given 70 or 80
pieces of mail.
Seeing all the monuments and
memorials was amazing, said Keller, but
nothing could compare to returning to
Milwaukee to a crowd of 5,000 people
greeting usThere were a lot of tears,
a lot of back-slapping, a lot of pictures.
As he reflected on his fateful decision to volunteer during the Korean
War, Keller said he was inspired by the
World War II veterans ahead of him. We
have what we have because of what
they did before us. A lot of people died
ahead of me and all I could hope was, I
hope I dont die.
(Serving my country) was one of
the great adventures of my life, and so
was Washington, he said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hamilton rallies
to beat Falls
A 10-point run by the Hamilton girls
basketball team was enough to lift the
Chargers to a 60-49 over Menomonee
Falls Jan. 15.
Menomonee Falls jumped out to the
early lead but Hamilton rallied and tied
the score at 17-17 on a three-point basket by Taylor Klug at the 8:26 mark of
the first half. The teams stayed close
throughout the first half, with a basket
by Macy Williams giving Hamilton a 2926 lead with 33 seconds left before haltime.
Falls and Hamilton stayed within a
few points of each other. Menomonee
Falls took a 44-43 lead with 7:05 left on
a layup by Marissa Igunbor. But
Hamilton then scored the next 10 points
and led 53-44 following a layup by Klug.
Two free throws by Igunbor cut
Hamilton's lead to 57-47 with 2:24
remaining but the Indians could not cut
into the lead any further.
Afterward, Hamilton Coach Bill
Scasny said Hamilton got more aggressive on defense toward the end of the
game and grabbed a few steals while the
team did a better job finishing scoring
opportunties in the final minutes of the
game. He also noted that Klug -- who
led all scorers with 23 points -- converted all six of her free throws.
"At the end we did some little things

correctly," he said.
At the beginning of the game, Scasny
said Menomonee Falls kept Hamilton out
of the lane and they were forced to settle for outside baskets.
"On a night where we don't have a
good night we were still able to pull out
a victory," Scasny said.
Menomonee Falls Coach Craig
Amundson noted his team played hard
and improved. He said the fouls caught
up with Menomonee Falls toward the end
of the game.
"They're a good team, 4-0 runs are
tough when you play a good team,"
Amundson said.
Hamilton started last week by defeating Brookfield Central 49-46 in overtime.
Klug scored 19 points and passed
Mackenzie Latt to become the all-time
leading scorer for Hamilton girls basketball. After the win over Central,
Hamilton was in second place in the
Greater Metro Conference with a 6-1
record and a 12-2 overall mark.
Menomonee Falls rebounded from the
loss to Hamilton with a 54-24 win over
West Bend West the next day. At the
start of last week, Menomonee Falls had
a 1-6 record in the Greater Metro
Conference and a 5-9 overall record.

Menomonee Falls improved its record
to 3-3 in the Greater Metro Conference
(tied for fifth place in the conference)
and 9-4 overall after a 68-63 upset win

led Menomonee Falls with 30 points
while Jacob Hartung led Hamilton with
26 points.
Hamilton rebounded from the loss with
a 56-40 win over Brookfield Central Jan.
19. Zach Jasinski led Hamilton with 15
points. After the win, Hamilton was tied
with Central for second place in the Greater

Metro, with both teams having 4-2 records.

Hamilton has a 11-3 overall mark.
The Kettle Moraine Lutheran boys
basketball team got past Ripon Jan. 19,
69-68 Jan. 19. Colin Biesterfeld led the
Chargers with 15 points. It was the sixth
straight win for the Chargers. The win
lifted Kettle Moraine Lutheran into a tie
for second place in the East Central
Conference, with Ripon and the Chargers
both having 5-2 conference records
while Kettle Moraine Lutheran has a 9-4
overall mark.

GUEST COLUMN: Gov. Walkers education policy is a nice recipe for success
BY REP. JANEL BRANDTJEN

In 2015 Wisconsin ranked second in

the country for ACT scores. Fourth and
eighth grade reading scores are up and
graduation rates in Wisconsin are the
third highest in the country. Those are
some pretty good numbers. I believe that
the reforms we have put into place including options for students have paved the
way. As outlined in his State of the State
speech on Tuesday night, Governor Walker
and Wisconsin are leading the way in education.
When speaking of recipes it is necessary to remember that the proof is in the
pudding.
Wisconsin has a long tradition of providing a quality education to its students
and families. Education indeed has been
and remains a high priority budget item.
The Republican led legislature is committed to building a state of the art public
education system. Wisconsin has devel-

oped a good blend of quality teachers,

administrators and parents who are dedicated to Wisconsins children.
The basic ingredient for a successful
education system are parents who understand the value of education and teach
those values to their children. The second
ingredient is parental choice, and not just
at the voucher program level.
Open enrollment provides a competitive model with neighboring school districts. Taking advantage of free market
principles, open enrollment allows parents
to choose the best school for their children and provides incentives for school
districts to provide a consumer based
product.
Virtual schools provide an alternative
educational model for many students on
either side of the learning curve.
Homeschooling has become more and
more popular and virtual schools give
those students access to teachers and co-

Community Memorial Hospital and

Foundation accepting scholarship
applications from area students
Community Memorial Foundation and
the medical staff at Froedtert & the
Medical College of Wisconsin Community
Memorial Hospital are currently accepting scholarship applications from area
students pursuing careers in health care.
The online application and complete
details
can
be
found
at
http://www.froedtert.com/communitymemorial/foundation/scholarship.
Completed applications must be submitted by March 1, 2016.
Community Memorial Foundation
offers scholarships to high school seniors
and undergraduate students pursuing
health care or medical careers who reside
in the hospitals service area (north side
of Waukesha County, south side of
Washington County and the northwest
side of Milwaukee County). The students
are selected by a scholarship committee
based on their academic excellence,
interest in health professions, scholarship need, connection to the hospital
and enrollment in an accredited university or college.
The foundation supports many services and programs at Community
Memorial Hospital, said Sharon Ellis,
volunteer chair of the Board of Directors
of Community Memorial Foundation.
Our scholarship program allows us to
truly give back to the future of health
care. Donations to the foundation make
the scholarship program possible.

The medical staff scholarship program also includes scholarships for area
high school students as well as medical
students attending the University of
Wisconsins School of Medicine and
Public Health in Madison or the Medical
College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.
We are privileged to have a medical
staff that realizes the importance of
investing in the future of medicine,
explained Dave Goldberg, MD, chief medical officer and vice president medical
affairs at Community Memorial Hospital.
A portion of medical staff dues are allocated to fund scholarships for deserving
students. It allows our physicians and
providers to help young students pursue
medical professions.

curricular activities. Online learning can

also create an opportunity for students
who are at risk of not graduating to recover credits online.
Charter schools offer curriculums that
are tailored to specific needs for specific
children. Created in 1993, one of the
goals of charter schools was to remove the
restrictions and mandates of traditional
schools so as to promote innovation in
our schools. Today we have the Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
programs available across the state.
Milwaukee and Racine alone have over
15,000 students attending charter
schools.
Finally there is the voucher school
expansion. The Milwaukee Parental Choice
Program (MPCP) has not only provided
Milwaukee families a chance to escape
failing schools, the program has saved
public education billions upon billions of
dollars since its inception in 1990.

Milwaukee Public
Schools students
are funding at
nearly $14,000
while
voucher
schools education
children for about
half that amount.
The money that is
saved STAYS with
public education Rep. Janel Brandtjen
and is apportioned to school districts across the state.
Further evidence that Wisconsin is in
great shape, the unemployment rate is
the lowest it has been since 2001. Thats
another positive reflection upon the status of education in the State of
Wisconsin.
Janel Brandtjen represents the 22nd
Assembly District, which includes portions
of Richfield, Menomonee Falls, Lannon and
the towns of Lisbon and Erin.
