JEE Advanced 2013 Exam

Here's the JEE Advanced 2013 Paper Analysis by two of the leading entrance test prep
academies.
While around 1,50,000 students were shortlisted after JEE Main, only about 1,28,000
students have taken JEE Advance examination on 2nd June, 2013 to compete for about
10,000 coveted seats in IITs. The basic difference between previous years & this year is
that in previous years entry to IITs was based on the performance in IIT-JEE
examination papers subject to obtaining minimum 60% qualifying marks in class XII
Board examination, whereas this year the performance in JEE Advance can fetch a seat
only if one qualifies to be in top twenty percentile of respective XII Board examination.

Pattern of both papers of 3 Hours each remains objective type, however, out of various
types of questions viz Multiple Choice(MCQ) Single Correct, Multiple Choice Multi
Correct, Passage based Questions comprising of 2 or 3 Questions, Matrix-Match,
Numerical based Questions & Assertion-Reasoning types, from year to year there have
been variations in selection of types & number of Questions in each type.In previous
years, some types like Matrix-Match, Numerical based & Multiple Choice Multi Correct
type did not carry negative marks. All others carried negative marking.
This year in Paper 1, there is drastic change in marking pattern. Paper-1 is of 180 marks
(60 questions).
In each subject, 10 questions are MCQ-single correct with no negative marking with
each question of 2 marks only. Five questions are MCQ-Multicorrect with negative
marking (-1 for wrong answer). Five questions are Numerical Based with single digit as
answer (0 to 9) with negative marking(-1 for wrong answer). Each question of later two
types carries 4 marks for right answer.

Both Chemistry & Physics are balanced requiring in-depth thinking. Few questions in
Chemistry part are tough. Mathematics is relatively tougher than Physics & Chemistry.
Paper 2 of 3 Hours also had 60 questions. Marking pattern here also was different from
previous yea. Per subject, there was a mix of 8 No.MCQ-Single correct & multicorrect in
the same section. This is little taxing for students , since they have to be extra careful in
hunting single/multicorrect in the mixed lot. Each question is of 3 marks with penality
of 1 Mark for wrong answer.4 No. Matrix-Match type questions were easy but different
from previous years & had negative marking. Each question had only one correct choice
(+3,-1).
There were 4 Passages with 2 questions each. Each question has 3 marks for correct
answer & - 1 mark for wrong answer. Overall, Paper-2 is a shade easier than Paper-1.
Cut-offs are expected to be lower than previous years, however, it should not be difficult
for serious focussed student to sail through.

JEE Advanced Paper Analysis by Aakash
Overall the paper quality was good. The JEE body offered a well deserved paper to its
aspirants. In terms of changes from last year, there has been a change in marking
scheme. This year, the section with single correct answer has no negative marking while
the section with multiple correct type MCQ has negative marking which makes the
paper tough.
Physics:
If we talk about the Physics section of JEE advanced 2013 Paper-I, it was of medium
intensity. There were a few traps to entice a student to commit mistakes and mark the
wrong answers. A student with a balanced state of mind, who reads each and every word
carefully would do well in this paper. For example, there were 3 questions, which were
presented in a way that a student could get the wrong answer if he did not read them
carefully. And the wrong answer was also in the options. Out of 20 questions in the
Physics section, 3 were of very easy level, 2 were hard and remaining were of medium
level. The average score would be around 35 out of a total of 60.
Chemistry:

The Chemistry section of JEE (Advanced) 2013 Paper-I had thought provoking
questions. Some of the questions were very tricky and required in-depth knowledge. An
average student is more likely to commit mistakes in such questions. Majority of the
problems were straight forward. Many of average and above average students are likely
to attempt these problems correctly. Out of 20 problems, 4 problems were of easy level,
10 problems were of moderate and 6 problems were of difficult level. The average score
would be around 30 out of a total of 60.
Mathematics:
Finally, like always the mathematics section remains the deciding section of the IIT
entrance. This year also the JEE Advanced 2013 Paper-I of Maths was of relatively tough
level, as compared to Physics & Chemsitry. There were at least 8 to 10 questions out of
20 questions, in which students can easily commit mistakes. Most of the questions were
from mixed concepts taking much more than expected time for finding accurate (exact)
answer. Paper was relatively lengthy, but balanced with respect to weightage of class XI
and XII portion. The questions from class XI topics were of complicated nature and
would have required fair amount of effort from the students end to get exact solution.
The major effect of Paper-I was that for the very first time JEE has introduced negative
marking on multiple choice questions and integer type questions, that makes the paper
tough. The average score in this section should be around 24 out of a total of 60.
