he Cumberland County Womens Hall of Fame

will induct three women into the Hall at its
annual gala event in April 2016. The Hall of
Fame exists because there are so many women
of immense accomplishment throughout Cumberland
County, said Louise T. Bertacchi, founder and president of
the Hall. Inductees this year are Deborah Ayars, Jean
Nocon, and Margaret Battle Winchester.
Ayars was the first female County Engineer in New
Jersey and was a leader in bringing new technologies to
Cumberland County such as thermoplastic line striping
and liquid salt. She served as Township Engineer in
Hopewell and Fairfield Townships and she founded ATECH Engineering, an engineering, surveying and planning firm in Cumberland County. She worked on such
major projects as the Walt Whitman and Ben Franklin
bridges and reconstructing the main runway at the Atlantic
City Airport. She developed an innovative design for a
recycling center in Hopewell Township that has been a
model for other communities throughout New Jersey.
Nocon was responsible for restoration and preservation
of Union Hall in Dividing Creek and was instrumental in
saving the towns Post Office. She was Vice President of the
Downe Township Board of Education for nine years and
was instrumental in thwarting a movement that would
have made the Board an appointed rather than elected board.
Having developed a love of history in college, she now
serves as president of the Dividing Creek Historical Society.
Winchester is founder of the Margaret Winchester
Center for the Blind, which she ran for 30 years before
retiring. She became blind while still in her 20s, and her
loss led her to help others. Before starting the Center, she
went door to door to homes where there were blind residents, offering assistance in daily-living skills. With other
concerned citizens, she approached county officials and
advocated for services for the blind, which led to a daycare program at the old Cumberland County Hospital. She
was one of the early organizers of the Head Start program
in Cumberland County.
The April 27 gala event honoring the inductees will be
held at Merighis Savoy Inn in East Vineland. For reservations or more information, call 856-825-5929.

Driving in Snow and Ice

Snow has finally descended upon the region.
There is no time like the present to get yourself
and your car ready for winter driving. Firestone
Complete Auto Care offers the following tips to get
you on your way:
Slow down. Reduce your speed during adverse
driving conditions, and be prepared for longer
stopping distances on snowy or icy pavement. Try
to avoid abrupt movements when braking, accelerating or turning.
Tires are the key. A tires PSI (pounds per
square inch) can drop one pound for every 10degree drop in temperature. Both under- and overinflation lessens a tires gripping action. Once it
gets cold, tire pressure should be checked weekly.
Dont forget to check your spare tire, too.
Be seen. Always use headlights at dawn and
dusk, or while driving in fog, rain and snow, to
warn other drivers you are there. If you cant see
them, they cant see you! Dont forget to activate
your flashers when appropriate.
Check your wipersthey dont last forever. If
the rubber feels rough or seems cracked, replace
the wiper blades. Older wiper blades can cause
windows to become dangerously dirty, especially at
night or in snowy conditions when there is likely to
be salt on the road. Good visibility is a necessity.
During winter, when the roads and conditions
are particularly unpredictable, proper maintenance is essential for keeping your car prepared
for anything the season delivers.

For more tips on winter driving and car

care, see our guide beginning on page 16.

Camden and Atlantic Railroad. The location guaranteed that farm products from
the new settlement could quickly reach
the Philadelphia market. The railroad
would also reshape the development of
the town, drawing settlers closer to the
tracks and away from what would become
the White Horse Pike. The direct line to
Atlantic City was an added bonus.
In 1877, long after Landis had abandoned his claim in Hammonton, a second
rail system was added. The fate of the new
line, the Philadelphia and Atlantic City
Railway, would eventually intertwine with
the Camden and Atlantic.
According to Wentzel, Hammontons
new system was a narrow gauge railroad
(a rail width of 42 rather than 56 inches) that connected Camden with the
shore. Incorporated in 1876, the new line
had its inaugural run on July 7 the following year. Unfortunately, the railroad soon
went bankrupt and was acquired by the
Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. In
1889, it became the Atlantic City Railroad
and would remain so for the first third of
the next century.
In 1883, the Camden and Atlantic
Railroad was taken over by the
Pennsylvania Railroad. For the next 13
years, it was one of six South Jersey lines
controlled by the Pennsylvania system. In
1896, it was merged with the others to create the West Jersey and Seashore Railroad.
According to Wentzel, the best period for
this new rail system was between 1896 and
1933, the early days of parlor cars, the
express line to Atlantic City and a continued reliance upon train travel. In 1933, it
was consolidated with the Atlantic City
Railroad, to become part of the
Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Line.
The heyday of passenger-oriented railroads would begin a slow decline after
World War II, gradually ending a connection to an era in the not-too-distant past in
which the success of a town and its businesses was dependent upon the proximity
of a railroad. Passenger service would end
in the 1980s, but its demise would be
short-lived. Today, PATCO and New
Jersey Transit utilize the same tracks that
once served the Camden and Atlantic
Railroad in providing transportation for a
new generation of passengers traveling to
and from Atlantic City. I

he inaugural run of the Camden

and Atlantic Railroad on July 1,
1854 demonstrated the advantages such a system could
offer prospective vacationers and
businesspersons.
According to Don Wentzel in a 1988
South Jersey Magazine article, on the day
of the initial run, the train, which had
nine cars pulled by the engine Atsion,
departed Camden at 9:30 a.m. and made
stops only at Haddonfield, Waterford,
Winslow and Absecon, where the travelers then crossed over to Atlantic City in
boats, arriving at their destination at noon.
It would be another year before the tracks
reached the new resort and a telegraph
line, eventually leased by the American
Telegraph Company and Western Union,
extended along the entire route.
On July 4, 1854, three days after the
special run, regular passenger service
between Camden and the shore began.
The two-and-a-half hour journey on the
Camden and Atlantic Railroad was a considerable improvement over previous
modes of transportation. R. Craig Koedel,
in his book South Jersey Heritage, reports
that the trip from Camden to Atlantic City,
up to then, had taken two full days to
cover by stagecoach.
George Reeser Prowell, in his book The
History of Camden County, New Jersey,
effectively captured what the new form of
transportation meant: At last the meadows were crossed and the terminal point
on Absecon beach was reached. Visitors
looked out upon the ocean. They were
surrounded by a barren but a high beach,
where the bathing was all that could be
asked. Out of the sand, the sedge and the
slashes arose a town filled with a permanent, as well as a transient population,
seeking after health, recreation and fortune. The line of the road is now crowded
with towns immediate and towns
prospective, with farms and factories
where hundreds of people are employed
and obtain a comfortable livelihood. On
either side the soil has been cleared and
found suitable for all the crops adapted to
the climate.
Charles K. Landis and Richard Byrnes
took full advantage of the soil conditions
and the transportation when they founded
the town of Hammonton along the

Baker said, Typically, landline service

Members of the Vineland High School AP U.S. Politics and Government class,
along with the Model Congress club, traveled to the New Jersey State House
Annex in Trenton on December 11 to compete in the NJ Model Congress Political
Party Day.
Students helped form three political parties, debated and wrote platforms,
and elected party leaders. Seniors Greg Hughes, Estrella Orta and Sarah FilippiField were standouts in the debate. Students will now write their own bills for
consideration in March at the Model Congress.

ain Street Vineland is instigating a full assault at one of

our businesses this week
the date: Friday, January 22;
the place: Tropical Latin Restaurant, 523 E.
Landis Ave., Vineland; the time: business
hours11 a.m. to 2 a.m.; the tactical gear:
PEOPLE AND MONEY.
Were arranging a cash assault there
to kick off a monthly series of Fourth
Friday events. This is a soft rollout and
well shift into high gear when the weather
breaks and well then expand the concept
to include more of our downtown.
What is a cash assault? You might
have heard of a cash mob, where a group of
people come to a local business to make
purchases. They converge on the business
during a short period of time. Well, a cash
assault is the same thing, but extended
over the full dayor, in this Fridays case,
during the time when the business is open.
What do cash mobs and cash assaults
do? They work in harmony with a key mission of Main Street Vinelandto help our
downtown businesses. They generate business, and this has a ripple effect throughout the downtown. They generate social
interaction and make our downtown a destination for other such activity.
Our Promotions Team is hard at work
planning events for future Fourth Fridays.
In the meantime, however, come down to
Tropical Latin Restaurant this Friday for
lunch, dinner, or drinks. A DJ will play

Think You Know Snow?

Follow These Tips
Winter comes with a unique set of challenges, including lower air temperatures, lack
of visibility, fewer daylight hours, falling snow
and, of course, icy roads. These can certainly
make for some hazardous driving conditions,
which is why experts say you should dig out
your ice scraper, gloves and snow shovels
before hitting the road.
Dont set off like a tank commander with
a tiny hole cleared, says Andy Smith, a
patrolman in Canada.
The safest way to prepare for winter driving is to be proactive before an emergency
occurs. The following tips will give you some
ideas on how to drive safely all winter long:
Surface Conditions. Roads and drive
paths are likely to be covered with rain, sleet,
snow and ice, which causes slippery driving
conditions and reduces tire traction. Consider
using snow tires in areas where winter
weather is severe. Its also important to
inspect your tires for uneven wear, cupping
and proper tread depth. Also consider the last
time you had the tires rotated, balanced and
aligned.
Emergency Situations. Winter weather
increases the chance of getting into a car accident. Pack an emergency kit to leave in your
vehicle at all times. Consider including safety
items such as flares, medical supplies, jumper
cables, a flash light, batteries, a small shovel
and tire chains. Also consider comfort items
like blankets, gloves and snacks.
Clear Vision. Snow, ice and fog diminish
your visibility, creating dangerous driving
conditions. Remove all debris from your
windshield, windows and outside mirrors
before driving. Replace your wiper blades
with extreme-weather blades for a stronger
wipe to battle heavy rain, snow and ice
buildup.
Vehicle Performance. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your vehicles owners manual to avoid hard starts,
stalling and lost power during colder weather.
Keep your gas tank above the halfway mark
because empty tanks collect condensation,
which damages the engine.
Some regions experience heavy snow and
dangerous ice storms, others find an increase
in rainy conditions, and in some places, temperatures may just cool down a bit.
Regardless of location, the winter season
brings a climate change that all drivers should
consider.

Winter tires are designed to handle the icy

elements of cold weather.

New Years Resolution:

Take Better Care of
Your Vehicle
While we might slip up on our New Years
resolutions at times, this year you can resolve
to take better care of your car all year.
Firestone Complete Auto Care offers the following tips for winter vehicle maintenance to
get you started!
Be proactive. Winter only magnifies
existing problems like pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Make sure
your vehicle is mechanically sound before the
temperature dips and the streets get icy. Make
certain the engine is in peak condition. Also
check the cooling system. Coolant should be
replaced per the vehicle manufacturers
maintenance schedule.
Be on schedule. Have your motor oil
changed regularly. Use the specified weight
and grade of oil recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. Also make sure to check
that the heating/defrosting system is working
properly.
Be prepared. Prepare for potential winter
emergencies by using your trunk as a storage
place for emergency items. Important items
to have on hand includea properly inflated

Its the Law: Get Your Vehicle Inspected

Three Undisputed Facts About Auto Inspections
Getting your car inspected is the law.

30+

Maintaining a safe vehicle is the law.

YEARS

Your local auto mechanic is here to help you comply with the law.
Though you may have heard otherwise, you are still obligated to have your
car pass a motor vehicle inspection every two years and receive a valid
sticker as proof of compliance. Previously in New Jersey, you were required
to pass both an emissions test and a safety inspection to receive a valid
sticker. Today, due to budget constraints and to stay in compliance with the
federal Clean Air Act, the Motor Vehicle Commission now requires you to
only pass an emissions test. While a safety inspection is no longer necessary
to pass, you are still required by law to keep your car in safe mechanical
condition.
Failing to keep your car in safe running order means you put yourself,
your loved ones, and other motorists at greater risk for a motor vehicle accident. Furthermore, law enforcement officers can ticket you for failing to
maintain these safety standards. That can be VERY expensive, since you may
receive a ticket each time you are pulled over and there are no limits to how
many citations you may receive in a single day.
It is far better to address any safety issues today rather than put your
family (or your wallet) at risk.
This NJGCA member is committed to helping you keep your car in safe
mechanical order to avoid these possible issues by offering you a no-obligation free safety advisory.
Well do our part to lower your risk of getting into an accident or getting
finedbut please do your part in helping to keep our roads safe. Thank you
for your patronage, and safe motoring.

spare tire; ice scraper; windshield de-icer;

flashlight; blanket; extra clothes; bottled
water; cell phone car charger and non-perishable snacks.
Be on the defensive. Take a defensive
position against winter driving conditions,
and take care of your tires. Once it gets cold,
tire tread and pressure should be checked
weekly. A tires PSI measurement can drop
one pound for every 10-degree drop in temperature. If snow and ice are a problem in
your area, consider installing winter tires,
which are specially designed to grip slick
roads.
Be diligent. Use common sense during
adverse road conditions. Reduce your driving
speed, and increase your following distance in
hazardous winter weather. If you get stuck in
the snow, dont spin your tiresthis can overheat them and possibly cause damage. Use
sand, gravel, kitty litter, an asphalt shingle or
other gritty items to help your tires gain traction when stuck.

Nearly all drivers could improve whats

in their trunk to be better prepared for
roadside emergencies. A new survey by
State Farm and KRC Research shows twothirds of drivers (67 percent) had some sort
of junk in their trunk, ranging from car
detailing equipment to toys and used food
or drink containers. Getting rid of the
junk (non-emergency supplies) and
adding the right supplies will help people
deal with the unexpected and get back on
the road.
When it comes to being prepared for
roadside emergencies, men are more likely
than women to have at least one of the
essential supplies in their trunk according
to the survey. Essentials include jumper
cables (64 percent of men vs. 53 percent of
women), a flashlight (62 percent of men vs.
48 percent of women), and a first aid kit (47
percent of men vs. 40 percent of women).
Men are also more likely than females (81
percent to 53 percent, respectively) to check
their vehicles emergency supplies.
Even on a relatively short trip, you can
find yourself stranded for several hours.
Whether its because of a flat tire, an empty
fuel tank or treacherous conditions like ice
or fog, it's important to be prepared, said
John Nepomuceno, auto safety research

administrator from State Farm. These new
findings highlight the importance of having
the right emergency equipment so you can
safely get back on the road sooner.
Who has the most junk? The survey
also revealed that parents (77 percent),
younger (79 percent) and middle aged (73
percent) drivers were significantly more
likely to have junk in their trunk, than
non-parents (62 percent) and older drivers
(58 percent), respectively.
Only five percent of drivers carry all
recommended items: While nearly all
drivers (96 percent) had at least one emergency item in their vehicle, such as a spare
tire or jumper cables, a mere five percent
carried all the emergency roadside equipment, including: jumper cables, spare tire,
hazard triangle/road flares, flashlight, first
aid kid, windshield scraper, water, non-perishable food and a blanket.
Drivers need to check emergency car
supplies: Nearly four in 10 (38 percent)
drivers with emergency supplies say they
check that their supplies are working at
least twice a year or more (the recommended frequency). Thirty-one percent of drivers say they only check once a year and 32
percent say they have never checked at all.
Trunk Essentials: State Farm encourages responsible driving every day of the
year, and especially during cold weather
months when inclement weather is more
common. If driving conditions turn treacherous and leave you stranded, these emergency roadside items can help you stay safe
until help arrives.

Ensuring that the roadside emergency
equipment in your vehicle works properly
is often overlooked, Nepomuceno says. In
fact, according to the State Farm survey, a
majority of drivers with emergency car
supplies are putting themselves at risk by
failing to regularly check that their equipment is working properly. The only thing
worse than getting a flat tire is finding out
that your spare is also flat.

K9s for Warriors was founded in

FOREST GROVE AUTO BODY: Vince

Simione, owner, recommends when driving in
winter snowy weather to make sure that you
accelerate and decelerate slowly.
Ive seen a lot of cars come in just from
not applying the gas slowly, he says. When
driving slow, it works on icy roads by helping
you to regain traction and avoid skids. It
takes so much longer to slow down on icy
snowy roads, so take your time to brake sooner and slower than usual.
You can AVOID being at the Body Shop if
you make sure that your car is prepared for
the winter snowy roads. You have to know
your brakes when it comes to the snow in
winter. Whether you have anti-lock brakes or
not, the best way to stop is threshold braking,
keeping the heel of your foot on the floor and
use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady
presssure on the brake pedal.
And if the weather is so bad, you may just
want to stay home, he advises. 856-777-8430.
