Scope
!nternational Standard specifies the requirements for the design, materia!s, construction, installation and
testing of permanently installed fue! systems as installed for internai combustion engines.

4 Generai requirements
4.1 Materials and design
4.1.1 Individua!components of the fue! system, and tha fue! system as a whole, shall be designed to
withstand the combined conditions of pressure, vibration, shocks, corrosion and mOllementencountered
under norma!operating conditionsand storage.
4.1.2 Each component of the fue! system, and the tuel system as a who!e, shall be capab!e of operation
withinan ambient temperature range of - 10 'C to + 80 C, withoutfailuraor leakage. and be capable of being
storedwithoutoperatonwithinan ambienttemperaturerangeof - 30 'C 10+ 80 'C, wthoutfailureor leakage.
4.1.3 Alimaterals used in !he fue! system shall be resistant to deteroration by its designated fuel and to
other liquids or compounds with which it may come into contact under normal operating conditions, e.g.
grease, !ubricatingoil,bilge solvents and sea water.
4.1.4 Petrol engine compartments and petrol tank compartmeots sha!l have ventilation and ignition
protectionin accordance with ISO 11105 and ISO 8846.
4.1.5
The on!y outlets for drawing fuel trom the fuel system shall be
plugs in petrol filter bowls intended solely for the purpose of servicing the filter,
p!ugs or valves in diesel filter bowls intended solely for the purpose of servicing the filter.
NOTE
4.1.6 Each metal or metallicplated component of a petrol fuel filisystem and tue! tanl<which is in contact
withthe fuel shaUbe grounded so that its resistance to the craft's ground s less than one ohm.
Grounding wires shall not be clamped between a hose and its pipe or spud.
4.1.7 Fue! fiUingsystems shall be designed to alloid blowback of fuel through the filiftting.Fuel systems
shal! be tested in accordance with4.2.3.

4.1.9 Ali fuel system components in the engine compartment - excluding permanently installed fuel tanks,
which are tested in accordante wth ISO 21487 - (e.g. fi!ters, water separators, and hoses) shallindividually,
or as installed in the cratt, be capable of withstanding a 2,5 min fire test as specified in ISO 7840:2004.

Fasteners supporting metal fuellines
4.1.10 Copper-base alloy fittings may be used for aluminium tanks if protected bya galvanic barrier to
reduce galvanic corrosion.
4.1.11
4.2 Testing
4.2.1
After installation, the fuel system as a whole shall pass the pressure test specified in Annex A.
4.2.2 Fuel system components that are small enough. such as fuel valves, and required to be fire tested
according to 4.1.9 shall be tested as specified in ISO 7840:2004, Annex A, with tha lower part mounted
250 mm above the surface of liquid in a pan of whch the sides extend beyond the component by 150 mm.
The component to be tested shall be a complete assembly and include ali accessories intended to be
attached directly to the component.
4.2.3
There shall be no b!ow back of fuel through the fili fitting when fi!ling at a rate of 30 IImin from 25 % to
75 % of the capacity on the tank label. For tuel tanksof 100 I capacity or !ess, the fili rate may be reduced lo
20 I/min. (see 4.1.7). The test lo determine compllance with this shall be performed on at !east one craft or a
representative installation.
4.3
Installation
4.3.1 The fuel system shall be permanently installed. Ali component parts, except small connectors and
fittings and short sections of flexible hoses, shall be independentlysupported.
4.3.2
Ali valves and other components intended to be operated or observed during normal operation of the
craft, or for emergency purposes, shall be readily accessible. Ali other componenls of the system shall be
accessible. Tanks need not be accessible for remova!.
4.3.3
The clearance betwean a petrol fuel tank and a combustion angine shall not be less than 100 mm.
4.3.4 The clearance between a petrol tank and dry exhaust component(s) shall not be less than 250 mm,
unless an equivalent thermal barrier is provided.
4.3.5
4.3.6
Fuel tanks and components of petrol tuel systems shall not be installed directly abova batteries unless
the batteries are protected against the effects of tuel leakage.

5.1
Fuel
Fuel fiUinglines
5.1.1 The minimum inside diameter of the fili pipe system shall be 31,5 mm and the minimum inside
diameter of fuel filling hoses shall be 38 mm.
5.1,2 Fue! filling hoses located in the engine compartment shalJbe fire resistant, of type A1 or A2 in
accordance with ISO 7840. Fuel fili hoses outside the engine compartment shall be of either type A 1 or A2 in
accordance with ISO 7840, or of type 81 or 82 in accordance with ISO 8469.

5.1.3
Fuel filling lines shall be self-draining to the tank when the craft is in its static floatng position.
5.1.4
Fuel filling lines shall run as directly as practcable, preferably in a straight line from the deck plate or

Vent lines
Each fuel tank shall have a separate vent Une.
5.2.2
Vent hoses located in the engine compartment shall be fire resstant, of type A 1 or A2 in accordance
with ISO 7840. Vent hoses oulside the engine compartment shall be of either type A 1 or A2 in accordance
with ISO 7840, or type 81 or 82 in aecordance with ISO 8469.
5.2.3
The cross-seetional area of any vent component shall not be less than 95 mm2.
5.2.4
Vent lines shall not ha ve valves other than those that permit free flow of air and prevent flow of liquid
(fluid) both in and out of the tank.
5.2.5
Vent lines shall be self-draining when the craft is in its statie floating position.
5.2.6
The distance between compartment ventilation openings and fuel vent openings shall be at least
400 mm, except where the craft's coaming, superstruclure or hull creates a barrier to prevent fuel vapour
entering the craft through the ventilation opening.
5.2.7
The vent Jne shatl be arranged to minimize intake of water withoul restricting the release of vapour or
intake of air and shall not allow fuel or vapour overflow to enter the cratl.
5.2.8
The vent-line termination or a gooseneck in the vent-line routing shall be arranged at sufficient height
to prevent spillage of fuel through the vent Une during filling and entry of water under normal operating
conditions of the craft.
On mano-hull sailing cratt, the vent line shall be arranged to minimize Ihe risk of fuel spillage or entry of water
through the vent when sailing at a heel angle of up to 30..
5.2.9 The vent lines on ali fuel nstallations shall incorporate a flame arrester device that tulfils the
requirements in 4.1.7 and 5.2.3.
5.2.10
For components installed in the vent Une, the requirements in 5,2 apply.
5.2.11 For vent-Unecomponents in the engine cornpartment, with the abi1tyto capture fuel, the fire test
requirements in 4.1.9 apply.

Fuel distribution and returo lines shaH be properly supported and secured to the craft structure above
bilge water level, unless specifically designed for imrnersion or proteoted from the effects of immersion.
5.3.9 There shall be no joints in fuel distribution and return pipes or hoses other than those required to
connect required fuel-line components, e.g. filters and bulkhead connections.
5.3.10 Fuel distribution linas to petrol engine(s) shall ba designed or installed to prevent fuel siphoning out 01
the tank following a failure in the system. The following examples illustrate how this can be achieved:
routing aH parts of fuellines. from which an assumed leakage oan enter the cratt, abova the level of the
tank top when the craft is in its static 110atingposition, including fuel-containing parts on the engine; or
fitting an anti-siphon valve (3.4) at the tank fittings with a rated siphon-protection
required to avoid the siphon effect; or
fitting a manual shut-off valve - which shall be capable of being closed from an indicated accessible
location outside the engine compartment -- in a position that is self-draining 1romthe valve to the tank; or
fitting an electrically operated valve at the tank withdrawal fitting which is activated to open only when the
engine is running or the starting device is operated. A momentary override type is acceptable for starting.
5.3.11

5.4.3 Spuds or other fittings for h~ eonnection wlth hosa clamps shall have a nominaI outer diameter
whiehis the same as fue nominaIinner diameterof the hosa, and should be ehosen froma series of preferred
numbers, e.g. 3,2; 4; 5; 6,3; 8; 10; 12,5; 16; 20; 25; 31,5; 40: 50; 63.
5.4.4
Hose connections designed for a clamp connection shall have a spud at least 25 mm long.
5.4.5
Hose connections having a nominai diameter of more than 25 mm shall have two hose clamps. The
Spuds intended for hose eonnection shall be free trom sharp edges that eould cut or abrade the hose.
5.4.7
Hose elamps sha!! be matte 01 CrNi 18-8 stain!ess steel,
depending solely on sprng tension shall not be used. The nominai
for nominai outside hose diameters up to and including 25 mm and
shall be of the correet size and shall be frtted according to the elamp
manufacturer's requirements.
5.4.8 Clamps sha!! be insta!!ed to fit directly DOthe hose and sha!! not overlap each other. Clamps shaU be
installed behind the bead, if any, or fuHyon the sarrations on spuds at least one elamp width from the end of
tha hose.
5.5 Valves
5.5.1 ManuaHyoperated valves shall be designed with positive stops in the open and closed positions or
shall clearly indicate their open and closed positions.
5.5.2
The integrity and tightness of a valve shall not depend solely on spring tension.

shall be secured against unintentionalopening by a device that can be reused.

Fuel filters
5.6.1
Patrol fuel systems shall be equipped with a fuel filter, which may be fitted on the engine.
5.6.2 Diesel fuel systems sha!! be equipped with at least one fuel filterand one water separator. The two
funetions may be combined in one unit.
5.6.3
5.7 Labelling
Ali components (e.g. filters, pumps and water separators) that have passed the test for fire resistance
specified in ISO 7840:2004, Annex A shall be labelled or marked with the following:

A.i Generai
A.1.1 When testing a separate component af a fuel syslem. the test pressure shall ha equal lo the greater of
the followingtwo values: 20 kPa or 1,5times thehighest hydrostatic pressure to whichthe component can be
subjected in service.
A.1.2 When testing a separate component containingnon-metallicpartsin contact withfuel or fuel vapour,
\he component shall ha flledwith test liquidin accordance withlSO 1817 and stared far at least 28 d at an
ambienttemperature cf not less than + 21 "C.
A.1.3 Pressure tasting shall ha periormed immediately after emptying the componen\. Individuai or
assembled components, and individuaitanks shall be pressure-tested and any leakage detected either by
submerging in water or by using a leak-detectingsolution.
A.1.4 A component shall not show any leakage during pressure testing for 5 min.
