Please submit this page on the top along with your final
exam.
I....hereby state that I have worked on this exam
solely by myself and I have not consulted or discussed with any human (physically or
electronically, except instructor Nirupam Pal) to provide answers to these problems. If it is
proven that I have discussed or copied or took any help from any one except Dr. Nirupam Pal, I
will accept a F grade in this course.

Problem 1: (25)
(a) Fuels for motor vehicles other than gasoline are being used because they produce lower levels
of pollutants. Compressed propane (C3H8) has been suggested as a source of economic power.
In a test 20 Kg of propane is burned with 400 Kg of air. Determine the % excess air used in this
case. (10)
The chemical reaction C3H8 + 5O2 = 3CO2 + 4 H2O
(b) A local company discharges a organic toxic compounds to a river with a initial concentration
of 50 mg/L with a flow rate of 100 L/min. If the volumetric flow rate of river is 2000 L/min.
Due to biological process, the first order decay constant of the chemical is 0.6/day and we
consider instantaneous mixing of the chemical with river, determine the at what down gradient
point (distance), the concentration of the toxic compounds drops to 10 ppb level. The down
gradient velocity of river is 1 ft/min. (15).
Problem 2: (25)
You are working for the California Department of Water Quality and must issue a discharge
permit to a certain industry. The industry wishes to discharge green muck into the Icikold
3
o
River. The flow of waste water from the industry is 0.15 m /s at 40 C and DO of 0.0 mg/L .
3
The flow of water in the Icikold River (upstream from the waste water outfall) is 1.35 m /s at
o
10 C with a BOD of 1 mg/L and DO 85% of saturation. The BOD test of the Green Muck is
o
given below in the table at 20 C with 7 mL of wastewater. The depth of the river is 1 meter.

The water in the river moves at a velocity of 0.5 m/sec with a bed activity coefficient of 0.15.
o
The reaeration constant is 0.7/day at 20 C.
(a) Determine the distance where minimum DO will result?
(b) Will the river exhaust its assimilative capacity?

Problem 3(25).
th
On March 13 , 2113, at 13:13 hours, a truck rolled over on Route 101, carrying 8000 gallons of
gasoline (C6H14) and spilled all of it near Cal poly. Density of gas is 0.78 Kg/Liter. It was an
o

unusual hot day with 90 F and 0.96 atm pressure. Gasoline degrades under this condition at a
first order rate of 0.005 /day. All these gas instantaneously vaporized and went into air.
Consider Sal Luis Obispo city as 5 miles long, 2 miles wide and 0.25 mile high. Also consider
instantaneous mixing in whole San Luis City Air. Gasoline degrades under this Air from north
is flowing at 5 miles per hour through the city and going towards Arroyo Grande at same
velocity.
(a) Determine the maximum concentration of Gasoline in San Luis Obispo air in
PPMV.
(b) At what tine, the concentration of Gasoline will reduce by 99% of maximum
value?

Problem 4: (25)
Think about a cold cold col...d winter night in Siberia, Russia. During a trip you and your friend
got trapped in a 9 star hotel. Due to severe winter weather, there is no power or gas heat in the
hotel. The hotel supplied you a kerosine (C9H8O2) heater to keep you all safe and warm. The
room is 8 m X 6 m X 3 m and you are burning 0.1L kerosine/hr (density 850 grams/L).
(a) If the initial carbon dioxide concentration is 360 PPMV, after how many hours
will it reach 2000 ppmv (at this concentration you may get sick).
(b) What steady sate flow of fresh air is required to maintain a carbon dioxide
o
concentration of less than 1000 PPMV. Consider the room temperature to be 4 C
o
and outside temperature -20 C at 1.0 atm.
