As the year winds down, there are several things I want to bring to your

Jill Wang – PTA President
Earthquake Preparedness: To supplement the earthquake preparation our

Important dates items in your child’s backpack: your own contact information, emergency contact

for Parents & Guardians keeping a light sweater in the backpack at all times. Please note that each classroom
6:00 dinner - cafeteria has a first aid kit and supplies and we have a large container fully stocked with
6:30 – 8:30PM workshop emergency equipment that is located at the rear of our playground area. All staff
LeConte’s Library members know how to access the emergency supplies. Please let us know if your
phone number changes; this information must remain current should your child

EVENTS
Fourth Graders Attend Sierra Outdoor School April 7-9
As an extension of the social studies standards about the California Gold Rush, our fourth grade
students will be taking a three-day fieldtrip to Sierra Outdoor School in Sonora, in the Sierra
Mountains. The classes include gold panning, Ohlone Indian life, a reenactment of education in
a historic one-room, 1860 schoolhouse, and workshops related to science and environmental
studies. For several years, the fourth grade fieldtrip to Sierra Outdoor School has provided a
wonderfully memorable way for our students to learn about California’s history and environment
through hands-on activities in the gold country.

Opening a Discussion about Race, Education and Berkeley – Thursday, April 22, 6:00PM
This is the last of three open discussions about race and education in Berkeley hosted by
Berkeley Arts Magnet. Nicole Sanchez from Berkeley Alliance and Cleavon Smith from
Berkeley City College will be facilitating a discussion about The Achievement Gap and
Berkeley’s 2020 Vision. The event is intended for adult participation only; childcare will be
provided for children ages 3 and up with RSVP. A potluck supper begins at 6:00PM and the
discussion and open forum begins at 6:30PM. All staff, families, district employees, district
families, caregivers, friends and neighbors welcomed and encouraged to attend. For information
or to RSVP, contact Beth Gerstein at beth-gerstein@comcast.net or 510-548-2334.

LeConte Community Volunteer Day: Saturday, May 1, 9:00AM-12PM

Please stop by the school with the kids on Saturday, May 1 from 9:00AM-12 noon to help spruce up the
place. 4th and 5th graders are welcome to join adults in painting the Peaceful Playground maps. Younger
kids can play in supervised activities or paint fence art if we get needed materials and volunteers. The
more families that come, the more we can get done! If you know you’re coming, please RSVP to Jessica
Fiedler at 540-7818 or jfied@earthlink.net. But feel free to drop by unannounced as well!

Classroom Updates: Testing Begins Monday, May 3

Beginning Monday, May 3, all second through fifth grade students will begin taking the
California Standards Test. Testing will begin each day by 8:30AM, therefore, it is very
important that students arrive to school on time, at 8:10AM, so that they have a chance to
settle down, center themselves, and begin the test on time. Students who arrive late will be
assigned to a kindergarten or first grade class and will have to make up the test as soon as
possible. We will provide breakfast and snacks during testing. Please make sure your child goes
to bed early and has at least 8 hours of sleep, and please encourage your child to focus, listen to
directions, and read all directions. This is not a timed test, so students should not rush through it.
You will receive examples of test questions at least two weeks before testing starts (April 16).

Latino Literacy Project – last three sessions: April 17, May 1 and May 15, 10:00AM to 1:00PM
LeConte’s Spanish-speaking families – there are three more opportunities to experience strategies, make
books, and exchange ideas about how to help your child develop and improve her/his literacy skills. If
you haven’t yet attended, you are still welcome to attend. Please contact Principal Wilson for more
information. All sessions will be held on Saturdays at LeConte in Room 201. There is a book raffle at
each workshop and childcare is provided. This is a continuation of the program that started in the fall,
funded by a grant from UC Berkeley.

LeConte Calendar
Celebrate LeConte Assemblies – Next one on Friday, April 30, 8:15AM
This month’s assembly will include routine student recognitions: Students of the Month, students who
have met the mathematics challenge, students are using the Compass Learning Internet based software,
and students “Caught in the Act” reading and adhering to the three school rules: Be Safe, Be Responsible
and Be Respectful. We will also be celebrating Día de los Niños (Day of the Child), an annual event
sponsored by our English Language Advisory Committee. If you would like to make any announcements
during this assembly, please contact Principal Wilson. As always, we are very grateful to Darby Schouten
for bringing coffee and pastries to each of these events for parents.

LeConte Student Art in Zeum Show through Sunday, May 16

Work from students in LeConte’s afterschool architecture class has been included in Zeum’s new
youth art show, “My San Francisco: A Neighborhood Mashup.” Zeum is San Francisco’s hands-
on multimedia arts and technology museum for kids, located in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena
Gardens (near the Montgomery Street BART station). For more information, see
www.zeum.org.

Free H1N1 Vaccine Clinic: 9-11am at 2500 Milvia Ste 114

H1N1 vaccine clinics will be held every Friday from 9–11 AM (EXCEPT Friday, Feb. 12, Lincoln’s
Birthday Holiday) for all members of the public at the City of Berkeley Public Health Clinic. The new
temporary location is 2500 Milvia St., Suite 114. The vaccine is FREE. You do not need to be a
Berkeley resident. For more information, call (510) 981-5350 or see the City of Berkeley’s Public Health
page: http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/publichealth/

LECONTE LEADERSHIP COMMITTEES

English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC)
The committee is currently planning events to celebrate our third annual Día de los Niños (Day of the
Child). Activities may include a day of making crafts, a performance by members of our ELAC
committee and a finale on Friday, April 30th. The group is still finalizing arrangements and will contact
other committee members and family to provide assistance. The next ELAC meeting will be Thursday,
April 22, 5:00PM in Room 101 (childcare and dinner provided).

PTA General Meeting

The next PTA meeting will be Wednesday, April 20, in our cafeteria. Dinner will be served at 5:45PM
followed by the meeting at 6:00PM. The focus of this month’s meeting will be discussing ways you can
help your child prepare for the California standards test (CST).

School Governance Council (SGC)

The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 7, LeConte library, at 6:30PM. Most of last month’s
meeting was devoted to discussing results from the LeConte Survey, the 2010-11 budget, and alternatives
to helping students develop social skills to diminish concerns about inappropriate behavior. At least 59%
of our families completed the survey. Some of the major areas identified by parents as needing
improvement are discipline, restroom/school cleanliness, safety and security, not enough time to eat
lunch, and bullying. Our school’s 2010-2011 preliminary budget, as outlined by our district office, is
about $8900 less than last year. Therefore, PTA’s funds will definitely be needed to subsidize the cost of
noon supervisors, tutors, and field trips. Suggested budget allocations will be finalized by the end of this
month. Our fifth grade teachers, Ms. Blanchard and Mr. Argueta, are supporting a grant proposal that
would fund a full-time case manager who would support, monitor, and provide resources for students who
need mental health and/or social skills development to achieve in school. The committee is considering
discontinuing the fifth grade Mosaic field trip in order to support other school needs. The Mosaic Project
is a five-day outdoor camp designed to help students understand and develop conflict resolution skills.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3
Although it is an excellent program, the long-term value of the program for our students is unclear. Given
the budget shortages, the committee may choose to redirect those funds to other needs. There was no final
decision about continuing Mosaic; this will be discussed with other stakeholders and committees.

SCHOOL-WIDE NEWS

forms mentioned above, and are also available outside the office and on the website.

Materials Needed for Student Art on Playground Fences

Seeking donations of plywood, etc. We’d like to organize some student art projects to create more
plywood art to hang around the playground fences. We need 1/2” plywood, outdoor housepaint (primer
and bright colors), and the loan of a jigsaw and someone with experience using it! If we can’t get enough
of what we need from people’s garages, perhaps you’re a contractor who can let us use your discount to
buy supplies. Please contact Jessica Fiedler, 540-7818 or jfied@earthlink.net if you’d like to help out.

LeConte Community Kidz

Thanks to Charity DaMarto, our Community Kidz After School Coordinator, we have been
able to offer workshops for parents. The "Parents on Board" workshops have been a hit at a
LeConte, so three more have been scheduled, April 7, 14, and 21. This is an incredible
resource for parents to become even stronger advocates for their children and to help them do
well in school. Parents have found them extremely valuable. Everyone is invited to attend. This
week’s workshop is designed to equip parents and guardians with tools to understand the
standardized testing system, such as the California Standards Test that second through fifth
grade students will be taking the first week of May.
Cost: FREE! Free workshop materials, dinner, and childcare are provided.
To register: Contact Charity DaMarto: 510-883-5244, Charity_DaMarto@berkeley.k12.ca.us

Steps to Improve Achievement

Principal Wilson met with all teachers to discuss the progress of their focus students (students who are
struggling with meeting grade-level standards and/or need more challenging work). Teachers reported
that most of these students have shown improvement, though some may still be working below grade
level. Several teachers felt progress was hindered because so many students arrive late. They need
families to get their children to school on time. Some students are missing 20 to 30 minutes of reading
and language arts instruction every day. This not only affects their ability to learn the expected material
but also negatively impacts their feelings of success in the classroom setting. As a result of the meetings,
teachers are now going to explicitly help students develop, discuss, and monitor their own learning by
having students record specific academic goals, e.g., writing a level 4 paragraph, complete sentences, etc.
Principal Wilson strongly believes that students should be taught how and what it takes to achieve a
goal/success and that all students have the ability to get smarter through effort. If students know and are
held accountable for improving specific areas then they have a greater chance of understanding that they

4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
LeConte Calendar
have control over their progress. You can help by asking your child about her/his goal. In addition, all
students should be able to tell you one or two things learned during the day. Making learning standards
explicit and clear to students is required of teachers to promote student engagement and accountability.

Lost & Found Clean Out on May 1

If you think your child may be missing a sweatshirt, jacket, or other item, please check the Lost & Found
soon. Items in Lost & Found are scheduled to be donated to a shelter on May 1. Please remember to
label your child’s coats and sweatshirts using laundry-safe markers or iron-on name labels (available
online).

LeConte Students Are Enhancing Learning With Free Educational Software

We encourage you to have your child support their learning after school or on weekends through the
Compass Learning educational software, provided free by the District. It is easy to access from home or
school. We are very pleased by the number of students who are already utilizing this program to “make
themselves smarter,” as Principal Wilson says. This software is aligned with state and national standards
and provides a stimulating (and fun!), customized learning environment for each child. Compass
Learning is at www.childu.com. To get your child started, you will need your child’s user name and
password. Most user names and passwords follow the following standard format: User Name:
LeCFirstNameLastInitial. Password: FirstInitialLastInitial School: BUSD For example, John Smith has
a user name of LeCJohnS and a password of js. Contact August Fern at august.fern@gmail.com if you are
having difficulties logging in or would like to set up a parent account to monitor your student's progress.

Email News: Are you on LeConte’s Listservs?

We encourage all LeConte families to join one of our school listservs in order to get the latest school
news. We have two moderated listservs – one for announcements only, and one for “announcements plus
discussion.” To join either group, please visit our website, www.leconteonline.org, and follow the links
on the right side of the home page.

LeConte Spring Auction – Save the Date!

Sunday May 16, 2010
Dear LeConte Families,

This year’s Spring Auction will take place on Sunday, May 16. It will once again be an evening event for
adults held at the fabulous Pizzaiolo restaurant, which is owned by a LeConte dad, Charlie Hallowell.
Tickets will be available soon, so please save the date!

At the Spring Auction, you can bid on fantastic goods and services donated by YOU, our LeConte
families, and many supportive local businesses. We need your help to secure more great donations for
the Silent Auction. Our goal is to top last year’s successful $23,000 fundraiser. Please help to
financially support our assemblies, field trips, tutoring, teacher education, art, the Farm and Garden
program, facilities improvements, and more!

DONATION IDEAS:
Can you give something from your work or hobbies? Can you ask your favorite restaurants or retail stores
for a donation? Here are some donation ideas… please be creative!

- Donations of a special skill (language lessons, music lessons, massage or sports lessons, childcare,
gardening, fixing things, etc.). Or, can your 4th-5th grade kids teach younger kids games or skills,
such as soccer, softball, art, etc.?
- Handmade jewelry or other arts and crafts.
- Tickets to a sports or cultural event.
- A weekend getaway at your cabin (or Grandma’s condo in Hawaii)!
- Design a party: Can you host or co-host a dinner, brunch, barbecue, swimming or skating party,
film screening, music performance, arts and crafts party or museum tour (for kids or adults)?
These are just some ideas of party themes – use your imagination!

This year it is more important than ever to raise money for LeConte. In light of the severe state budget cuts
we really need your help. The LeConte PTA would like to remind you that all donations are tax deductible.

To donate, please complete the form on the back and return it to Donna in the school office by May 1st,
2010. These donation forms can be used for donations from LeConte families AND the community. Extra
forms are available on the board outside the school office. Feel free to call or email with any donation
