Description of the Department
Department of Philosophy is a constitutive part of the Faculty of Philosophy (Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences) of the University of Zagreb.
The study of philosophy has been established at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of
Zagreb at the moment of the reform and modernization of the Zagreb University in 1874. In 1973 a
postgraduate study of philosophy was introduced. Hundreds of philosophy students were introduced
through this study program into research and obtained the degrees of magister scientiarum or doctor
scientiarum (Ph.D.). In 2003 a new doctoral study in philosophy has replaced the previous
postgraduate studies.
Today the staff of the Department consists of 4 full professors (N. ainovi, A. ovi, B.
Mikuli and L. Veljak), 1 professor emeritus (B. Despot), 3 associate professors (H. Juri, D. Lauc and
I. Mikecin), 7 assistant professors (L. Bogdani, A. akardi, G. Karda, R. Rauni, M. Selak, M.
Toki and I. Zagorac), 2 postdoctoral research assistents (Lj. F. Jei and B. Stamenkovi Tadi) and 3
postgraduate teaching assistents (K. Babel, M. Kos and M. itko). Some part-time teachers also
participate in education and research in the Department.
The Department of Philosophy offers programs at undergraduate (BA), graduate (MA) and
postgraduate levels. Philosophy study programme can be combined with numerous study programmes
at the Faculty of Philosophy, both at the undergraduate and graduate level. The academic title acquired
by the student upon completion of the Undergraduate Philosophy Programme is baccalaureus
philosophiae (BA of philosophy). The academic title acquired by the student upon completion of the
Graduate Philosophy Programme is magister philosophiae (MA of philosophy). Each year 80
undergraduate students are being enrolled. Undergraduate programme takes up a total of 8 semesters
and Graduate of 2 semesters. The Programme includes two types of elective courses: internal, offered
by the Department, and external, to be selected from the total range of courses offered at the Faculty of
Philosophy or at other faculties of the University of Zagreb. For the time being all courses are being
taught in Croatian, but it is agreed upon that all courses can be taught in English or German if needed.

The Department of Philosophy consists of the following chairs:

History of Philosophy (PhD Igor Mikecin)
Logic (PhD Davor Lauc)
Ontology (PhD Lino Veljak)
Epistemology (PhD Borislav Mikuli)
Philosophical anthropology (PhD Luka Bogdani)
Aesthetics (PhD Nadeda ainovi)

Description of the Department
The development of philosophy as an academic discipline at the Faculty of
Philosophy began with the foundation of the Institute for Philosophy and
Sociology in 1976. The Institute was reorganized into the Department of
Philosophy and Sociology in the 1988/1989 academic year. In the
1996/1997 academic year, the Department of Philosophy and Sociology
was divided into two separate departments the Department of
Philosophy and the Department of Sociology.
In 1995, the Department of Philosophy created general postgraduate
philosophical studies under the name Philosophy and by 1996 the first
doctorate in the field of philosophy was defended. By 2004, the
Department had begun a program of Specialist Studies in Philosophy.
During a process of reform, according to the requirements of the Bologna
Declaration, the Department of Philosophy began offering Bachelors and
Masters degrees beginning in the 2006/2007 academic year.
The Department is involved in systematic study and research within
projects approved by the Serbian Ministry of Science and Technological
Development. The Department has so far completed three five-year-long
scientific research projects which include Marxism and Modern
Philosophy, The Problems of Modern Philosophy and Philosophical
Transformations and Modern Society. In the 2005/2006 academic year, the
Department also carried out the project The Place of Philosophy in Modern
Society for the Provincial Secretariat for Science and Technological
Development.

The Department has published annual collections of papers written by its

lecturers (The Institute for Philosophy and Sociology
Collection and The Department of Philosophy and Sociology Collection),
and lecturers have also participated in and contributed to common
projects at the Faculty of Philosophy. In cooperation with the Cultural
Centre of Novi Sad, the Department began a collection of papers from the
Novi Sad Philosophical Debate. The collections called The Conception of
God in Philosophy and Fulfillment and Creation were published as the
result of the debate. Since 2004, the Department has published the
biannual journal Arhe.
In 1995, the Department and the Cultural Centre of Novi Sad began
collaboration with the Novi Sad Philosophical Debate which organises
annual meetings of the countrys most distinguished philosophical
thinkers.
At the initiative of the Departments lecturers, the multidisciplinary
convention Studies of Modern Time began in 1997 in association with the
municipality of id. The first topic at the convention was The Modern
Conception of Personality.
The Department annually accepts applications for 60 places in the
Bachelors degree program and 20 places in the Masters degree program.

Description of the Department

1. The Department of Philosophy (UP) is the only institution in Kosovo that organizes studies
of philosophy at the level of higher education. In the academic year 2014/15 there were
around 400 students studying at the BA level and 40 students studying at the MA level at the
Department of Philosophy. The BA and MA programs in philosophy are accredited by Kosovo
Accreditation Agency.
Study of philosophy at the University of Prishtina has begun in 1972 within the Department of
Philosophy and Sociology. The Department of Philosophy functions as an independent
department since the academic year 2001/2002.

The general vision of the Department of Philosophy is to support overall social development
and progress and to increase the level of spirituality of the society of Kosovo through offering
advanced studies in the field of philosophy. The mission of the Department is to create and
promote critical thinking, civic responsibility, respect and tolerance through studying
philosophy.
BA program in philosophy mainly offers courses in continental philosophy (70%), but a
smaller part of curriculum is also devoted to analiytic philosophy (30%). The main courses
that the Department of Philosophy offers at the BA level are the following: Introduction to
philosophy, Existential philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, Empiricism and rationalism, Political

3) Planned Activities
Describe shortly but in concrete terms what exactly you are planning to do during the next
academic year and what exactly is the specific contribution of each participating unit.
Student exchanges of cca. 300 CEEPUS months and professor exchanges of cca. 180
months are planned for the next academic year.
(to be extended!)

Special contribution of each institution

Some study programmes are specific in relation to others. E.g. Department for
Philosophy in Zagreb for its tradition in practical philosophy and strong international
concept of integrative bioethics. Guest lecturers on the Department of Philosophy were
Von Wright (analytical philosophy, Finnland), Paul Ricouer, Eugen Fink, Max Mller,
Henri Lefebvre, Jrgen Habermas etc. In this way each partner will be able to
complement the study programmes of other participating units and enhance scientific,
philosophical and multidisciplinary research in the respective fields.
Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb
Managing network application;
Coordination of the network, monitoring network activity;
Organization of a coordination meeting;
Hosting and sending students and teachers in the field of philosophy;
Involvement in the preparation of the new joint PhD study in the field of philosophical
foundation of interdisciplinary research, especially those between philosophy and humanities
and social sciences.
Several members of the Department are very active in The Centre of Excellence for
Integrative Bioethics which consists of three bioethical centers (in Zagreb, Rijeka and Split)
and is being included in the CEEPUS network as a silent partner.

(each partner should emphasize its own priorities)
4) Selection Criteria
Indicate the criteria you plan to employ to select students and teachers that are to be
exchanged.
Valid for the network in whole
Selection criteria for students
Student mobility
Selection criteria are worked out according to our experience in student and professor
mobilities exchanges (free-mover in CEEPUS and all kinds of mobility in the Erasmus
programme) during the previous years. Applicants are evaluated primarily by their home
institutions. A prerequisite for an application is good knowledge of either the language spoken
in the host country or English. Students are obliged to send a letter of motivation and other
necessary documents to the local coordinator at their home university.
The three major evaluation criteria are:
1. study records
2. general quality of engagement during former years of study
3. active participaton in scientific conferences, including student conferences,
publication of professional and scientific papers
Short Term Student mobility
For undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc) students short term mobility is restricted to
activities connected to work in preparation of the thesis for the diploma. Postgraduate students
mobilities should primarily be focused on research constitutive to their doctoral studies and
doctoral thesis. The students supervisor at the home institution should provide a
recommendation including a statement that the host supervisor/institution accepts the

candidate and his research program. The recommendation has to be referred to in the
Motivation part of the application. Joint thesis ("en cotutelle") will have priority in ranking.
Teacher mobility
Applicant teachers recommend their proposed activities (lectures, programs) in their written
applications in form of a document with titles of proposed lectures and their abstracts. The
host ppu will do the selection based on the proposed programmes and their compatibility with
the activities at the host institution.
5) Coordination
How you are going to ensure the proper coordination of your network.
Coordination and communication of ppus is conducted via e-mails on a montly or weekly
basis.
The planned frequency of coordination meetings is one annual meeting. Besides, meetings of
the coordinator with one or more partners regarding particular actions like the formation of
joint PhD studies or other, as well as for solving potential problems would be organized if
needed.

6) Recognition
Which steps have you taken to ensure mutual recognition?
Council of the Department of Philosophy in Zagreb decided on 1th December 2015 that:
Since ECTS credit system is used by all of the partners, at least 3 credits for the first month
and 4 credits/month for further stay is expected and requested to be awarded to exchange
students. Undergraduate thesis work (methodology, literature survey) should also be awarded
ECTS credits. The exact number of ECTS credits in this case would be decided by the host
supervisor and/or the institutions ECTS coordinator with the power of the home ppu to
accept or reject the assigned credits.
All other participants guarantee with their Letters of Intent the recognition of achievied ECTS
credits by their students at other host universities.
7) Special Merit
Tell us how you fit in CEEPUS in your overall range of activities.
The proposed network already has a certain tradition of bilateral and multileteral cooperations
developed among some partner institutions in different educational and research activities like
mutual participation in scientific conferences, guest lecteures, exchange of study materials as
well as collaboration on research projects involving MSc and PhD thesis. Critical thinking
and interdisciplinary cooperation between philosophy, humanities and social sciences are
among the main priorities in research and development of philosophy and philosophical
foundation of interdisciplinary research. Therefore, these aspects are also priorities in the

development of higher education in Europe, especially in the countries of the European

Union. This is also reflected in involvment of most partners in ERASMUS+ activities.
8) Further Information
Anything else you would like us to know about your network.

9) Type of instruction planned

Select as many activities as needed. If you are using additional activities indicate others
and explain them in the section network activities.
-courses
-lectures
-assistance with work on a (doctoral) thesis

10) Language of instruction planned

Select the CEEPUS languages your network will be using. If you are using additional
languages indicate others and explain them in the section network activities.
english

others
11) Network Activities
This section is meant for additional information to the items you have selected under Type of
instruction planned and "Language of instruction planned".
In some contries in the network cognate and mutualy comprehensible native languages are
being spoken, which is especially the case with native languages of Croatia, Bosnia and
Herzegovina and Serbia, and partly also of Macedonia and Kosovo. In cases where there is no
language barrier in communication between the speakers of closely cognate native languages,
these languages will serve as means of instruction and communication.
12) Background Information

Is there something special about your network and its setting?

Anything else you would like to share?
The aim of the proposed network is to investigate the presuppositions of the
interdisciplinary approach and the possibilites of interdisciplinary cooperation between
philosophy and humanities and social sciences. Originally, from the time of Old Greeks
philosophy was the source from which special sciences sprang. In modern times sciences
divrsified their field of study, separated themselves from their broader context of social
and political life and empancipated themselves from philosophy advancing into extreme
specialization and subspecialization. The consequence of this process is the loss of
communication between now very specialized scientific fields and loss of insight into
their scientific and philosophical foundations and systematic presuppositions. The role
and importance of orientional knowledge in difference from every sort of operational
knowledge directed solely to technical efficiency, is being neglected and therefore often
completly overlooked. The task of philosophy in this context is to analyse the historical
and systematic origin of this state of affaires and to enable the interdisciplinary and
transdisciplinary cooperation on the basis of logical, ontological and epistemological
investigations. Philosophy should point to the common source and internal unity of
different fields of knowledge and outline the possibilites of further development of
science, especially in areas yet undiscovered by inhererited scientific enterprise
constrained with the establisched scientificed methods and procedures.
From the background of these general theoretical considerations cooperation between
philosophy and special scientific fields will be more profoundly established and
interdisciplinary conducted, with special stress on the relations and interactions between
philosophy and special sciences (such as linguistics, pedagogy etc.), philosophical
foundations of interdisciplinarity, especially between humanities and social sciences and
new interdisciplinary fields. Interdisciplinary approach in this network is also stressed
through philological and comparative studies of European and Non-European
philosophy.
The focus of our network will be set on studies in the field of history of philosophy in
comparison with history of science, art and religion, ethics and bioethics in close
connection to biomedical and biotechnical sciences, philosophy of education and
pedagogy and psychology (especially in the new field of philosophy for childern),
practical philosophy (social and political philosphy) and sociology and politology.
Our partner universities and particularly their networking departments and institutes
have mutually corresponding educational profiles that are complementary to a degree
that ensures a successful realisation of this programme. With our network we want to
expand the range of possible student and teacher mobilites, which can be improved in
the future with the acceptance of new partners. This network could be of decivise
importance for the process of internationalisation of the study of philosophy at Croatian
and many South-East European universities. This includes among other issues an
introduction of English courses in philosophy and establishment of a firm network of
researchers in Central and South-East Europe. The possibility of mobility exchanges
would undoubtedly increase the spectrum of choices for both students and teachers for
the development of their personal skills and professional competences. It is important to
stress that most topics related to our research require the aforementioned

interdisciplinary approach which can only be achieved through interaction of

compatible and complementary institutions as partners of the proposed network.
The proposed network is based on the succesful tradition of cooperation between philosophers
in our countries.
The network remains opened for further new ideas and initiatives.
(to be extended!)
13) Index
Select the "Index" entries that describe your field of activity best. You can select
several entries.
2.2.4. History, philosophy and related subjects
1.1.2. Education science
2.2. Humanities
2.2.1. Religion and theology
3.1.1. Social and behavioural science

14) Joint programme

After the first year of cooperation within our network we should be able to see more clearly if
a joint programme could possibly be established at the postgraduate level.

15) Objectives
What is it that your network is trying to achieve?
What is the most important thing you are trying to achieve?
What do you estimate to be the biggest obstacle in trying to meet your goals?
Improving the quality of international cooperation in the field of philosophy and cooperation
between philosophy and particular sciences (especially between philosophy, humanities and
social science) in Central and South-Eastern Europe, is one of the most important issues
concerning the future of science and higher education at the beginning of the third
millennium. In this respect critical thinking and philosophical (especially methodological)
foundation of interdisciplinary research are key issues in both research and education.
Through internationalization of research and teaching in this area philosophy, humanities and
social sciences could invigorate their potentials and further develop their abilities necessary
for the realization of their social tasks. The partner universities participating in the proposed
network already have a considerable tradition of collaboration achieved through the

participation of academic exchange outside of CEEPUS (except some cases of teacher's and
student's free-mooving inside CEEPUS).
For the time being, we find our central objectives in the following areas:
- methodological foundation of interdisciplinary research
- studies in the field of history of philosophy in comparison with history of science, art
and religion
- ethics and bioethics in connection to biomedical and biotechnical sciences, but also
other scientific and non-scientific, cultural and religious perspectives
- philosophy of education in relation to pedagogy and psychology (especially in the
new field of philosophy for childern)
- practical philosophy (social and political philosphy) in close connection to sociology
and politology
The proposed network would provide possibilities for exchange of teaching and research
experience in these fields by enhancing student and teacher mobility, as well as by
development and harmonization of curricula, and preparation of joint programs.
Biggest Achievement
The biggest achievement of the network could be adopting the principle of flexibility resulting
in introduction of new partners almost every year in the near future. This allows introduction
of renovated curricula as an offer to students of existing partners, as well as spreading the
research collaboration among working groups in different countries.
At this moment we can not identify with certainty any possible obstacles in trying to achieve
our goals.
16) Long Program Description
A comprehensive overview of your network: line out what you have set out to do, how you
cooperate. Why your network is special and important for the region.

Exchange of teachers and students of philosophy represents the first step of comprehensive
philosophical cooperation in our countries.
The proposed network is the first regional network in the field of philosophy (first CEEPUS
network primarily devoted to philosophy) and at the same time the first network which is
strictly based on the idea of interdisciplinary cooperation between philosophy, humanities and
social sciences.
