In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and

conventions of real media products?

digipak
Whilst designing my digipak I had to make sure I took inspiration from a
variety of sources and existing digipaks to create an adequate design to the
correct standard of work I was trying to create for my band 'Eyes above' and
their latest album 'Tesla'. In my digipak I wanted to challenge the conventions
of a standard media product by using colours and design features which may
not be a common feature in a similar digipak which inturn supported my final
product.
The main albums in which I largely took inspiration from was the collaborative
album 'Pinata' by Freddy Gibbs & Madlib, Danny Browns 'Grown up' (single)
artwork and MF Doom & Madlibs 'Madvillainy'. All of these features are
evident when looking upon my final piece and I chose these pieces of artwork
as I felt they represented the alternative look in which I was trying to create in
my own digipak. Further aspects which I obtained from other artists was the
record labels, legal information and correct spacing of the text. The main
colour palette in which I chose to use was black and white which coincides
with the digipaks I have mainly taken inspiration from, I felt these colours
although bland would stand out to a customer as an alternative to the
conventional colours (blues, greens, reds). Moreover I felt the text used
throughout was a consistent design which was easy for the reader to interpret
and not boring to look at aesthetically. This theme of 'easy to look at' I tried to
continue throughout which I feel challenges the forms and conventions of
media products in the past where they have attempted to include too much
design features and text resulting in putting off the reader.
advert
Largely when creating my advert I attempted to continue the minimalistic
theme in which I started with my digipak into its design which meant the
inclusion of the black and white colour palette and easy to read writing whilst
also making it eye catching enough for the reader to see it advertised across
the street etc. The prevailing factor which I wanted to develop from my
research into other adverts in modern times is that they all appear to use less
information on the adverts and more short embolded facts (e.g title, release
date) to get the facts over quickly. This is supported usually by a striking
picture to immediately grasp the readers attention which again I placed in the
alternative versions of my advert with a single member of my group. The
main advert which I took into account when deciding on my advert was Blink
182's 'Neighbourhoods' which although only including the geometric imagery
still remained eye catching for the reader with the black and white colour
scheme.
music video
In our music video we attempted to develop standard forms and conventions
of media products of a similar genre which is evident when our inspiration was
taken largely from artist such as FKA twigs, Grimes and Caribou. Largely our
main aspects focused on when filming was the the lip syncing and
synchronization of the dancing girls who all had to learn the routines
individually for some shots which were individually on them, this again was
another form we developed as this kind inclusion of band members in all shots
is nothing new to this genre of music. When designing our storyboard many of

the shots we intended to use we realized were not realistic for the actual
video resulting in many changes being made to the final piece which was
reflected in our final video in which we filmed with a white backdrop in a
studio which we hired out. The white background is a feature commonly used
in the work of artists of a similar genre to our artist e.g Beyonce - Countdown.
Largely due to our video being filmed on a very low budget it restricted where
abouts we filmed and even how long we had the studio for however in future
we would be more informed on how to make use of the facilities we had at our
disposal.
