MS Europa, the new flagship of Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, departed on September 10, 1999 for Hamburg
from her construction y ard, the Kvaerner Masa-Yards Helsinki New Shipy ard. This 28,000-gt luxury
cruiseship is the sixth vessel to bear this traditional name.

MS Europa is the first cruiseship to feature

Azipod electric podded propulsion units

together with an optimized hull form, a
PRAM-type stern. Equipped with two 6.65
MW Azipod units, she enjoys a 21-knot
vibration-free cruising speed. Adoption of the
Azipod system, combined with the optimized
hull form, has increased hydrodynamic
efficiency by approximately 12% compared
with similar-sized vessels of a conventional
design.

The inaugural cruise from Hamburg to the

Mediterranian sea via the British Isles began
on September 17, and was actively followed
by ABB Marine After Sales Service. On
November 8, she began her Millenium
Weltreise around-the-world, departing from
Lisbon, Portugal, and due to end in Venice,
Italy, on April 2000. Representatives of ABB
Marine escorted the vessel on this voyage
and were awarded the shipowners and
crews compliments and expressions of
satisfaction with the electric Azipod
propulsion system, its technical and

operational ability and quality, including

maneuverability. Both time-sharing captains
of the ship, whose operational principle of
maneuvering the ship from each other, have
stated that they consider a ship equipped
with the Azipod system to be very good. She
is vibration-free and easy to handle, even in
poor weather and difficult passages.

The Millennium Weltreise continued across

the Atlantic Ocean to New York and through
the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean. MS
Europa crossed the International Date Line
three times, thus celebrating the New
millenium twice. Her successful voyage
continued westbound around New Zealand
and Australia and through the Indonesian
Sunda Islands toward Singapore, where she
arrived on February 4. The Captain and the
Chief Engineer both have expressed their
satisfaction with the good Azipod ship and
the commitment and high professional skills
of ABB Marine engineers.
