Vidura Maitreya dialog (Canto 3, Chapter 5)
The dialog between Vidura and Maitreya begins in this chapter. Almost a third of this chapter are Vidura queries, requests, and doubts to Maitreya
indicating his thirst for knowledge.
Vidura asked, Everyone in the world seeks happiness but is not able to get it. How should we live in the world to be happy? What is the best
method to seek the Ultimate Knowledge? Why and how does the Lord take various incarnations? What are His sportive pastimes? How did He

create the universe? How does He remain unattached and be atmarama and then appear in different forms? What did He use to create the various
forms of life?
Vidura wanted to know more and said, Please narrate the story of Sri Krishna that is like nectar to the ears, in detail. Sage Veda Vyasa narrated
the story of Mahabharata to stress on the fact that seeking material pleasures will not bring eternal happiness. The sage thought that the stories
and the lessons from Mahabharata will inspire people to focus their attention to the stories of Bhagavan. When a person thinks about Sri Hari
with rapt attention, his interest in the material pleasures will decrease and the bliss that comes with haribhajanam will increase. Therefore, please
tell us with discrimination, what is good for our spiritual advancement.
We have seen earlier that Sage Maitreya had received the Ultimate Knowledge from Bhagavan Sri Krishna. The Lord had asked Maitreya to
impart or teach this Knowledge to Bhagavan's disciple Vidura. Therefore, Sage Maitreya was happy to hear these inquisitive words.
Sage Maitreya said, It is not surprising that you asked for these. After all, your birth as the son of Sage Veda Vyasa, was due to the curse of Sage
Mandavya. Since you are dear to Bhagavan Sri Krishna, he has specifically asked me to instruct the Ultimate Knowledge to you. Therefore, I
shall tell you in detail about the sportive pastimes of Bhagavan.
Before the creation, Bhagavan alone was there. He wished to exist in different forms and therefore glanced at maaya (which has the three gunas,
satvam, rajas and tamas). This process of glancing is called eekshanam. Prompted by kaalam, mahat tatvam (cosmic principle) appeared from the
agitated Maaya, just as butter is separated from yogurt. Mahat tatvam is also called buddhi tatvam.
From Mahat tatvam, Aham tatvam was created. Aham tatvam is the feeling that I am different. There is no feeling of mine and the question of
Who am I? From Aham tatvam, Ahamkaram is formed which brings the concepts or question, I am different, mine, and who am I? There
are three types of ahamkaram, namely, satvic, rajasic, and tamasic.
From satvic ahamkaram 10 presiding deities of the indriyas (sense organs) and four deities of antakaranam were created. The 10 sense organs
(five jnanendriyas and five karmendriyas) were created from rajasic ahamkaram. The five subtle elements and the five gross elements (bhutam)
were created from tamasic ahamkaram.
Sage Maitreya continued explaining the process of the creation of elements. The creation of elements (panca bhutas) is always from the subtle
elements. The subtle element sabdam ( sound) was the one to be created first. From this subtle element sabdam, its corresponding gross element
(one of the pancha bhutas) akasam (space) was created. It (akasam) has the feature of sabdam. When akasam was agitated another subtle element
sparsam (touch) was created. This subtle element was the cause for the creation of vayu (air, wind). This (vayu) has the characteristics of both
sabdam and sparsam.
From the gross element vayu, on agitation, the subtle element rupam was created. From rupam the gross element jyotis (tejas or anila) was
created. jyotis (tejas or anila) has three features, namely, sabdam, sparsam, and rupam. When jyotis (tejas or anila) was agitated the subtle element
rasam was created. From it, the gross element jalam was created. Jalam has four characteristics, namely sabdam, sparsam, rupam and rasam.
From jalam, on agitation, the fifth subtle element gandham was created. This subtle element, the gross element of bhumi was created. Bhumi has
five characteristics, namely sabdam, sparsam, rupam, rasam, and gandham.
Even with all these, creation did not progress. The presiding deities realized their shortcoming and paid obeisance to Easvaran.
The devas prayed, The wise prostrate at Your feet to get over the sorrows just as one uses an umbrella to seek protection from the hot sun.
Seeking knowledge to know about You is both tedious and difficult. Therefore, we surrender to you and want to follow the path of bhakti. Please
bless us with the necessary knowledge and ability so that we may perform the creation as You would like us to pursue.
In response to the prayer of Devas seeking help Lord did the following: "Bhagawan entered the disjointed elements of creation at the same time,
awakening the dormant creative energy within these elements. The awakened elements by Lord's grace combined meaningfully amongst
themselves starting the process of creation." - Says Sage Maitreya

The 23 elements awakened and directed from within by Lord combined themselves to form the cosmic being which formed the basis of all living
and non-living universe. Brilliantly radiating cosmic being with all the potential to create the Universe lay dormant for a thousand celestial years
enfolded in the cosmic shell." - Says Sage Maitreya

Just as a bee extracts nectar from a flower without harming the flower, Lord r Kr rs rn ra extracts the essence of all Vedic knowledge without

Virata Purusha - Chapter 6 of Skandha 3
In this chapter, Sage Maitreya continues to answer the questions about sargam asked by Vidura. Sage Maitreya said, When the presiding deities
prayed to the benevolent Easvara, He entered in all the 23 elements (mahat tatvam, aham tatvam, the five subtle elements, the five gross elements,
and the eleven indriyas, including manas). When Easvara entered in them, all the 23 elements together created Virat Purusha. He, the Virat
Purusha, remained in the causal waters for one thousand celestial years.Afterwards, Virat Purusha remained just as one entity (consciousness),
then divided Himself into three aspects (identifications of the self adhidaivam, adhyatmam and adhibhootam), and also into ten vital airs (prana,
apana, samana, udana, vyana, naga, koorma, krkara, devadatta, and dhananjaya). Virat Purusha is the Universal Soul and all jeevatmas are parts
of this Universal Soul. This appearance as Virat Purusha is the first incarnation of parabrahma. From the face of the Virat Purusha the Vedas and
Brahmana were born. Kshatriya and the dharma for ruling were born from the arms of the Virat Purusha. Vaisya and the practice of agriculture
and business, came from His thighs. Sudra and the services for worship came from the legs of the Virat Purusha. Practicing their dharma, all these
four classes worship Lord Sri Hari for their spiritual advancement.Sage Maitreya spoke of Bhagavans glory, How can anyone describe the
sportive pastimes of Bhagavan, who is beyond kaalam (time) and maaya (the illusory power)? I shall attempt to glorify His sportive pastimes.
The wise men say that words should be used to glorify the actions of Bhagavan and the ears should be used to listen to them. Bhagavans glories
are boundless and it was not possible even for Lord Brahma to fathom it in 1000 years. The maaya which binds all of us is limitless and because
of that we are not able to know Bhagavan. I prostrate at thy "For a Jiva, the miseries, the cycle of birth and death appears to be real due to effect
of Maya, like in a dream where a person's head gets cut off appears to be so real. Jiva (which is unattached) can experience a change of nature
without the change being factual." - Says Sage Maitreya yad arthena vinamushya pumsa atma-viparyayah pratiyata upadrashtuh sva-siras
chedanadikah(3.7.10)
(3.7.9)A complete fool (who does not use intellect,
thus incapable of any doubts) and one who has realized God (which is beyond human intellect thus beyond attachments) both lead a care free
world of happiness. The one's in the middle like the common man suffers in miseries" - Says Vidura to Sage Maitreya Yasca mudatamah loke

(3.7.17)
O' Guru, serving Your holy feet will develop Bhakthi towards the 'slayer of Madhu' who is Lord of all and changeless. Attachment to
Bhagawan in the form of Bhakthi will develop happiness and keep one away from sorrow.

It is with great difficulty that people with lesser austerities can get in the company of Souls like yours who are living approaches Lord
of Vaikunta. For in your company where glories of Lord Janardhana (remove of ajnana) are sung devotedly, what cannot be
Realizing that Sage Maitreya is the right person to remove all doubts and lead him in the right path Vidura asks many questions:
What was the creation beyond the Virat like the Manus, the Prajapatis; details of three Gunavataras; How to pursue the 4 aims of
life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha); How to engage in acquiring the right knowledge, right teacher and grace of Bhagawan, so on
and so forth. Vidura concludes by stating the necessity and importance of more Bhagavad-katha Sravanam."Study of all Vedas,
practicing all the yajnas, doing all tapas and all the greating charities and austerities will not be in comparison to raising a person
beyond the fear of miseries of this world of Maya."- says Vidurasarve vedas ca yajnas ca tapo danani canagha Jivabhayapradanasya na kurviran kalam api (3.7.41) (3.7.41)Praising Vidura
(who is avatara of Dharma Raja) on his everlasting desire to listen to stories of Bhagawan, Sage Maiterya opts the best way to start answering
Vidura's questions:
"O' Vidura, For the sake of common people who have been burdened with grief and terrible sufferings while pursuing petty non-lasting
happiness, Bhagawan Himself provided the antidote to the great Sanakadi Maharishis in the form of Srimad Bhagavatam."
