NAME:

TOTAL POINTS: 120

DISCUSSION SECTION:

SCORE:

SECTION TA:

(1) All problems must clearly show the physical principles and the equations being used, the
substitution of any number into the calculations and the answers. Be sure to give the correct units. All
work must be done directly onto the exam paper provided.
(2) One formula sheet is provided. Textbook, math tables, dictionaries, other written materials and
scratch papers are not permitted. Obtaining programmed information from a calculator is strictly
prohibited.
(3) When submit your exam paper, it is your responsibility to make sure that your TA checks your
name to record that he received your exam paper.

Problem 1: Multiple Choice Questions (45 points)

There are 9 multiple-choice questions (5 points each). Circle the correct answer and show your
calculation or analysis.
(1) 1 mile is equivalent to 1609 meters so 55 mph is:
A. 15 m/s
B. 25 m/s
C. 66 m/s
D. 88 m/s
E. 1500 m/s
(Note: mph stands for miles per hour, while m/s for meters per second.)

(2) A ball is in free fall. Its acceleration is:

A. Downward during both ascent and descent
B. Downward during ascent and upward during descent
C. Upward during ascent and downward during descent
D. Upwards during both ascent and descent
E. Downward at all time except at the very top, when it is zero

(3) A stone is released from the edge of a building 190 m above the ground. Neglecting air resistance,
the speed of the stone, just before the striking the ground, is:
A. 43 m/s
B. 61 m/s
C. 120 m/s
D. 190 m/s
E. 1400 m/s
