espacial, social, econmica o poltica.

Between the thirteenth and the fifteenth century the Crown, local councils, Castilian
admirals or great seigniorial houses endowed the city of Seville and many other sites
along the Andalusian coast with a collection of norms, uses and privileges pertaining
the maritime and mercantile realm whereby they tried to foster economic activities and
commercial exchange. The aim of this paper is not to explain the origin and functioning
of the diverse institutions that sprang at that time, which would entail a more complete and
thorough approach to the domestic legal order and its sources. Instead, I propose to pay

This paper examines the influence of the sea on urbanism and cultural identity of seaports
of North Atlantic Spain, in the historic medieval demarcation of the Marisma y costera de
Espanna, along 2.400 km long coastline from Fuenterraba up Tuy in the Late Middle ages.
First of all, the protagonists of the port construction, the Basque and Cantabrian town
councils, showed a valiant effort to build adquate port infrastructures for their maritime
development from the second half of the 15th century and, in particular, the first decades
of the 16th century, despite the enormous economic effort involved for the population.
Secondly, author analyzes the influence of maritime relations on the cultural identity
of the people of the sea, which generated common iconographic elements, a same legal
code, the transfer of technical language and similar consumption patterns.

The proposal discusses management mechanisms arising from the administration of a
river-sea complex on the Bay of Biscay. This complex is inserted in special jurisdictions
based on privileges and founding charters, and in which urban space has a projection
on the port and vice versa. In this sense, and using manuscript and printed sources, the
management should be treated in relation to the space geography; willpower geography,
economy and tax law geography, social and cultural geography, paying attention for the
tensions and confrontations that are generated in practice.

This paper discusses the connections between the port of Seville and its areas of influence,
through the analysis of food supply in the organization of warships in late fifteenth and
early sixteenth centuries. This analysis allows to know the places of origin and the means
employed in transport and arrangement of the load, both in the carry and in the stow
inside the boats. This results in the setting of typologies and dimensions of the containers
and the sequence of actions of the collectives involved. It also examines the transfer of
these issues to the development of port life.

This paper discusses an approach to the relations articulated between the ports of the Bay of
Cdiz during the transition from 15th to 16th centuries. These relationships, analyzed from the
methodological study of port systems and coastal navigation, can detect areas of cooperation
and economic integration, but also serve to define more precisely non positive relationships,
defined by questions such as violence or spatial, social, economic or political competition.

In this paper, we aim a close analyse of ports and undersea and maritime features in the
Atlantic coast of Andalusia that were plotted on portolan charts in Late Middle Ages.
Thus, we intend to deepen in two remarkable matters for Maritime History of the Crown
of Castile between 14th and 16th centuries. Firstly, it concerns the evolution of port
geography of the kingdom of Seville during a period characterized by the considerable
development of this coastal area located on the main shipping routes among the Mediterranean Sean and the Atlantic Ocean. Secondly, in order to focus on the production
and dissemination of nautical knowledge about the Andalusian Atlantic coast through
the end of the Middle Ages into the beginnings of Modern Times.

The study of ports on the Strait of Gibraltar in the transition between the Middle and the
Modern ages, essential to understand the historical evolution of this territory, is focused in
textual documentation analysis and, to a lesser extent, in cartographic sources. The archaeological record has been rather more limited despite the dramatic rise of the excavations and
surveys both terrestrial and submarine in recent decades. This article aims to reflect on the
causes of the scant attention devoted to these vestiges and to present known evidence until
now scattered in a wide range of publications of limited diffusion or simply unprecedented.

controled by the Castilians. In the early years of the sixteenth century he uses Castilians

Very little is known about Florentine presence in Andalusia in the Late Middle Ages. From
very different sources mercantile collected letters, accounting entries, ricordanze, chronicles and nautical documentation the present articles aims to outline the issue with more
accuracy. Therefore, the study deals with information about the Florentine community in
Seville and Cadiz in chronological order, to better appreciate the quantitative and qualitative differences between 14th and 15th centuries. The prosopographical method has been
favoured, trying to offer the most possible complete portraits of considered individuals and

opening of a consulate in Cadiz.
