From the Editor

Im so excited about our bridal features in this issue of

Carolina Bride so excited, in fact, that we only have two
features to make room for all the gorgeous photos!
For the first time, we have a bride and a groom on the
cover ... because you might have heard of the groom.
Marcus Lattimore was a star running back at University of South
Carolina and was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers.
Miranda and Marcus have been together since long before the rest
of South Carolina learned about Marcus, and they have such a sweet
love story. Their wedding was palpably joyful, and it had an air of
inevitability everyone there seemed to know this was always going to
happen, and everyone was thrilled for them.
I really cant say enough nice things about this couple. Theyre
crazy in love. Theyre super nice. Theyre fun. Theyre obviously best
friends. Wrapping up our first phone interview, Marcus told me, You
should probably know were gonna have, like, 12 babies. And what does

Our cover bride is Miranda Bailey, who

married Marcus Lattimore on Dec. 19, 2015
at the Lace House in Columbia. Read their
story on page 11.

Miranda think about this? She wants 20. Miranda shouted from the
background that he was lying, and Marcus backed down minimally.
She probably wants one, but were gonna have 12.
They let Carolina Bride crash their wedding Dec. 19 at the Lace House
on the grounds of the Governors Mansion. Jeff Blake took beautiful
photos and made a completely unreasonable deadline. (Wedding
photographers usually take weeks to edit their photos; Jeff got these to
me the next day. See Jeffs work at www.columbiaweddingphotos.com.)
Read about one of the sweetest weddings Ive ever attended on page 11.
And our second feature is fantastic, too. If youre planning a
traditional downtown Columbia wedding, Hayden and Jeremys is
pretty much the dream a casual rehearsal party at the Lace House, a
formal candlelight ceremony at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, a reception
at the Palmetto Club. Their photos are stunning; I knew as soon as I
saw them we had to feature their wedding. Hayden planned most of the
wedding herself, and her taste is impeccable. Every detail is timeless,

classy and elegant.

But thats not my favorite part of their feature. Hayden and Jeremy
have a really fun technological element to their how-we-met story. Its

Love goes
the distance
By Rebekah Lewis Hall

rhall@thestate.com

t James F. Byrnes
High School in
2006, football players were kings.
The Rebels have
won 11 state championships
including four consecutive
titles in 2002 through 2005.
Byrnes freshman Marcus
Lattimore had just joined the
elite team when he set his
sights on Miranda Bailey.
Miranda, then an eighthgrader, remembers their first
interaction.
They were both at McDonalds
after a football game, and
Miranda was trying to talk her
older sister, Marissa, into paying for her food.
I didnt have any money, and
Id already spent my allowance
for the week, Miranda said.
Marcus offered to pay, and
she let him. But he didnt get
my phone number until a little
later, during track season,
Miranda said.
Miranda was on the track
team, but for some reason she
doesnt remember, she wasnt
running that day. She and
Marcus talked throughout the
meet. At the end, when everyone
was leaving to go to McDonalds
again (Duncan is a small town;
theres not much to do, Miranda
explained), Marcus shouted at
her across the track, Hey, hey,
can I get your number?
He asked if she wanted to
ride with him to McDonalds,
too, but Marissa told her no.
Youre looking for trouble,
she told Miranda.

Nine years later as Marissa,

the maid of honor, dressed for
Marcus and Mirandas wedding, she said, I didnt have
anything against him. I was
just very protective of her.
And they were so young,
added Eboni Samuel, Marcuss
sister and Mirandas matron of
honor.
Marcus understood Marissas
reservations.
We went to a high school
where the football players were
worshipped, he said. Shed
seen how guys acted when the
girls came around, and she
thought I was like that. And I
was at first.
But it didnt take Marcus
long to realize that he wanted
to keep Miranda around. And
while Marissa initially was
intimidating, he said, It was
something that I respected.
What calmed Marissas worries about her sister was seeing her happy. I felt comfortable once I started seeing the
two interact.

ll of Marcus and
Mirandas attendants
have known them as
long as weve known each
other, Miranda said. We all
grew up together.
Bridesmaid Brittany Lake
remembers
ninth-grader
Marcus as kind of goofy.
Nobody knew who Marcus
was until he started breaking
records, she said.
And by the time he was
breaking records, he and
Miranda were serious.
After that first year, it was

13

14

til death do us part for

Miranda, said bridesmaid
Whitney Trella.
When Marcus graduated
from Byrnes and went on to
play football at University of
South Carolina, Miranda and
her friend (and future bridesmaid) Ruby Durham took
turns driving to Columbia on
the weekends.
Miranda knew she wanted
to marry Marcus after seeing
his humility as he became a
star at USC.
A lot of people, once they
become good at something,
theyll start to get full of themselves, she said. Seeing him
stay humble, it eliminated that
fear that he would change.
Their biggest challenge
came in October 2012, when
Marcus tore all the ligaments
in his right knee. He had torn
his left ACL the season before,
but Miranda said, I dont
think the first injury was anything really difficult.
Miranda struggled to
understand when you have
two legs that work and you can
do anything and everything
you need to and worked to
figure out the balance
between making him feel
comfortable and making him
feel completely handicapped.
Thats when Mirandas
mom, Sherry Davis, knew the
two would get married.
By watching her how she
treated him when he was hurt I
knew she was in it for the long
haul, she said. And I knew he
would realize that he was in it.
Marcuss mom, Yolanda
Smith, couldnt pinpoint the
moment she knew.
Shes always been that good
girl, she said, noting that
Miranda has always been not
just in his life, but in our lives.
I want all of my children to
have that forever kind of relationship, Yolanda said.
Marcus was drafted in early
2013 by the San Francisco
49ers. While he was in
California, Miranda, a real
estate agent, would work for
three months in South

Carolina and then spend a month in

California.
With the long-distance thing, we kind
of had to go through that already when
Marcus went to USC, Miranda said.
Communication is key.
Miranda would stay up late to talk on the
phone with Marcus. By the time it was
midnight here, it was 9 oclock there, and
he was just getting in. I would think, I
have to contribute by staying awake.
But Marcus never fully recovered from
his second knee injury, and he retired
from the NFL in late 2014.

He bought the ring in March and proposed April 11 after running a football
camp at Heathwood Hall.
I figured, why not do it in front of a
bunch of young men who are going to find
their lady someday? he said.
Marcus didnt enjoy wedding planning.
(Im over it, he said a month before the
big day. Ive been over it.) But he did
enjoy planning the honeymoon to Antigua
and Barbuda.
Thats one thing I put Marcus in charge
of, Miranda said. Hes taking a Caribbean
cultures course, so hes learning all about it.

s he wrapped up one part of his life

in San Francisco, Marcus was ready
to begin the next chapter.
There was a time period (after announcing my retirement) where I had to wait and
get all my things together before I could
come back to South Carolina, he said.
He was looking at rings then and he
even took a class on diamonds while he
was looking. I wanted to make a smart
purchase, he said.

arcus had a long list of friends to

narrow down for his groomsmen, so
he had just family as his attendants.
His father, Archie Lattimore; his stepfather, Vernon Smith; and his brother
Octavious Love were his groomsmen, and
Mike Smith (hes actually my cousin, but I
call him my brother because he looks just
like me) was best man.
So when four men in suits matching
theirs walked into the grooms suite,

Marcus was 100 percent blindsided.

Yolanda, his mother, had secretly asked
four of his closest friends Jazz King, Pat
Fish, Walker Inabinet and Devin
Washington to serve as ushers, and BP
Skinner Clothiers, which outfitted Marcus
and the groomsmen, had secretly outfitted them as well.
When those four guys walked in those
are guys that I consider my best friends I
almost cried, Marcus said. Those are
just my guys. I can talk to them about anything. Im happy they were a part of it.

ecember weather in South Carolina

is unpredictable, said wedding
planner Meagan Warren of Meagan
Warren Weddings, so for the Dec. 19 ceremony at the Lace House, we had a Plan A,
B, C and D.
Were going with Plan A. The weather is
perfect, Miranda said the morning of the
wedding. Plan A was to set up an altar at
the fountain in the courtyard between the
Lace House and the Governors Mansion.
But we had a rain plan, a too-cold plan.

And Im glad we had all those plans!

And already that morning, theyd had a
few glitches.
We almost had an encounter this morning, Miranda said.
She and Marcus had unknowingly stayed
on the same floor of the hotel, and when
she walked into the hall that morning, he
was there. Miranda ducked behind her
mom and avoided the bad-luck sighting.
And the bridesmaids hair didnt look
like what they were aiming for it had
started falling when theyd left the salon.
You look like we already had the wedding, Eboni told Ruby. Eboni re-braided
Marissas hair as a stylist fixed Rubys.
But when the ceremony started at 3:30
p.m., the bridesmaids hair was styled,
and Marcus and Miranda hadnt seen each
other.
What Marcus had been most looking
forward to was seeing (Miranda) walk
down that aisle, and as he and the Rev. Ed
McDowell Jr. reached the altar, the tears
flowed, and his mom stood up to hand him
a handkerchief.
It was just such a magical moment for

me, he said. It was excitement, it was anxiousness, it was, Im about to be a married

man. It was a big step in my life, and all my
emotions just came out, and it literally
became the best day of my life. Up until
about 3:25 or 3:30, it didnt even feel like my
wedding it felt like I was at someone elses
wedding. When it hit me that this was really
about to happen, my emotions took over.
Pastor Ed is the minister of congregation
care at Mount Horeb United Methodist
Church in Lexington now, but from 2007 to
2013, he was the minister at Silver Hill
Memorial United Methodist in Spartanburg,
where Marcus attended church.
Pastor Ed followed the liturgy closely,
until the time for the bride and groom to
kiss. Marcus, you may salute your bride,
he said probably because it sounds
cooler, Marcus explained later.

iranda carried a bouquet of roses,

hydrangea, babys breath and dusty
willow by American Floral,
wrapped in her great-grandmothers handkerchief with two charms attached. One

charm was a photo of her mother and her

mothers brother that had belonged to her
grandfather. The other charm was a Batman
button, in honor of her 16-year-old brother,
Alex Davis, who walked her down the aisle.
My brother is the biggest Batman,
comic book, Marvel guru, Miranda said.
Alex wore a matching button inside his
jacket. It was our little connection.
Alex also surprised Miranda a few weeks
before the wedding, when he told her hed
prepared a toast.
My brother is very reserved, very quiet
but hes brilliant. I was nervous that he
was going to be whispering the whole
time, Miranda said. But he projected his
voice, and he did a great job. (He said) he
was honored to have walked me down the
aisle, and he couldnt think of anyone better for me to marry and he was excited
about our future together. It was one of
the highlights of my night for sure.

hile the couple used traditional

vows in the ceremony, they wrote
letters which they exchanged

17

18

after the ceremony in a lastminute change of plans

including additional promises
and declarations of love.
We dont usually do the letters (after the ceremony),
said Lori Anna Varnadoe, the
day-of coordinator with
Meagan Warren Weddings.
That turned out really well.
The couple had planned to
exchange the letters before the
ceremony on opposite sides of
a door to avoid seeing each
other, but they decided to wait.
Miranda had a full face of
makeup on, and she probably
would have started crying,
Marcus said, and I was already
crying before the ceremony.
They sneaked away for a few
minutes during the reception
and sat on a bed upstairs in the
Lace House to read their letters.
You are the silliest, funniest,
sweetest man I ever wrapped
my heart around, Miranda
wrote to Marcus. As much as
Im ready to be your wife, Im
going to walk as slow as I can
down that aisle to take it all in.
I will never give up on us or
take you for granted, Marcus
wrote to Miranda. I will honor
God and learn everything I can
about being a better husband
to you every single day.
Those promises were
important to them.
Even before they were
engaged, Miranda said the
two had talked about plans for
their marriage.
We both come from singleparent families, she said, so
we had talked about what we
would want in marriage and
our futures.
Before her wedding day,
Miranda looked forward to
saying her vows. Im a words
person, she said.
But, she added, marriage is
what Im more looking forward
to knowing that you have
someone who will try as hard
as you. Ive seen so many failed
marriages where someone just
gives up when its hard. Weve
already had hardships and
there will be many more but
well make it through.

his is embarrassing, Hayden Riley

Ellison begins the
story of how she
and her husband,
Jeremy, began dating.
They had known of each other for
years. Both graduated from University
of South Carolina, Jeremy in 2007 and
Hayden in 2009. With many mutual
friends, they always ended up at the
same parties and weddings.
I always thought he was so sweet,
said Hayden, 28, a client associate for
Merrill Lynch wealth management.
Both had been in relationships, and
theyd never spent much time together.
Jeremy, a sales leader for Holiday
Retirement, remembers an early
meeting at the USC-East Carolina
game in 2011. Both were there with
their significant others, but that
spark was there, he said.
When Hayden and her longtime boyfriend broke up, a friend talked her into
downloading the Tinder dating app.
Tinder lets users scroll through photos
of other users, anonymously swiping
right when theyd like to talk to someone more. When two users both swipe
right on each other, both get a notification that its a match!

The first person to show up on

Haydens screen was Jeremy who
had signed up as a joke.
I think we both thought the same
thing (when we saw each other on the
app), she said. Hes not single! But
she swiped right.
I didnt know she was single, Jeremy
said. I thought, OK, either somethings
going on, or Im on the wrong kind of
site. I kind of had to do my research.
After checking with mutual friends
to make sure she was, in fact, single,
he asked her out. They went to
Cantina 76 for happy hour, and before
long, they were inseparable.
I knew about three months into it I
wanted to marry him, Hayden said.
Everything with him was so comfortable and so easy.
Jeremy knew after their first
Christmas together. We had gone to
a Christmas party, and we were talking afterward, and I was thinking
about changing jobs. I remember how
understanding and supportive she
was, Jeremy said.
He had also spent time with Hayden
and her family and was impressed with
the kindness she has for family members. Family is very big for me. Thats
when I knew.

Photos by Jennifer Stuart Photography

24

heyd been dating less than a year

when Jeremy proposed.
I had planned the proposal and
how I was going to do it about a
month out, he said. I wanted something
small, I wanted it to be a surprise, but I did
want people nearby.
Haydens mother was visiting from
Greenville, and the two were out with
Haydens grandmother and Jeremys mother.
They were planning to meet up with Jeremy
for dinner, but he insisted that they meet him
at Haydens house. He told her hed been playing golf and needed to change clothes; he
couldnt come straight to the restaurant.
When they got to Haydens, Jeremy called her
into her bedroom, where he was already on one
knee. Hayden, will you marry me? he asked.
Its not very fairy tale, but its so him and
me, Hayden said. She doesnt like surprises;
she likes things planned. He was nervous,
which was so cute, because were never nervous around each other.
She wasnt expecting it, Jeremy said. It
went exactly as I had planned it.

When she called Modern Trousseau to

inquire about the dress, they told her they
hadnt even made the sample yet. She had
made an appointment at another boutique
in Charleston (We didnt have London and
Lace then, she said), and she got a call days
before her trip that the sample was in.
Her mom, her grandmother, her matron
of honor and Jeremys mom went to the
appointments. His mom had said about
three times, I hate bows, Hayden said. I
put it on, looked in the mirror and loved it.
I love this dress, she told her group. And
I dont care what you think. I just need to
know if its flattering.
Jeremys mom was the first to respond. I
hate bows, and I thought I would hate the
dress, but Ive never seen a dress more flattering, she said.
They bought it that day.

ayden knew from the outset that she

wanted a traditional and regal
gown. I went to all my high school
proms, she said, and my dresses were
always trendy and spectacular.
For her wedding, though, she wanted a
classic look something sleek, timeless and
simple. And she hadnt tried on a single gown
when she found the one in a bridal magazine.
An ad for Modern Trousseau in Charleston
he gown was the easiest part, Hayden
showed a bride in a white gown with a plungsaid, but she is a planner. I had to
ing back and a giant bow.
hide my stuff sometimes because
I saw it and said, Mom, I have to have people would make fun of me, she said.
this, she said.
I feel like Ive always known of what I

25

26

wanted. It was just a matter of

putting things together.
Jeremy didnt feel left out of
planning, though. We ran
things by each other, he said.
The ceremony was at Trinity
Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Columbia. Hayden grew up
in Greenville, but she frequently
visited her moms parents, Ray
and Sandra Owens, in Columbia.
Ray spent many years as an
administrator at Trinity, and
Hayden was baptized there as a
baby and remains a member.
The minister who baptized
Hayden, Susan Heath, also performed the wedding ceremony.
Hayden hired Meagan Warren of
Meagan Warren Weddings to help
her put things together. Hayden
called vendors, went to appointments and made decisions, but
Meagan advised her and made sure
the wedding day went smoothly.
Hayden knew exactly what she
wanted, Meagan said. She knew
she wanted white linens; she knew
she wanted this and that. So it was
just more about helping her find
the right vendor.
Margaret Crabtree of ByFarr
designed the save-the-date cards,
and ByFarr made her handwritten
calligraphy letterpress invitations.
Granger Owings outfitted Jeremy
and his attendants except the
ring bearers. AnnaBelle LaRoche

Babcock, who owns LaRoque boutique on Devine Street and served

as one of Haydens bridesmaids,
handmade the ring bearers jon
jons of cream raw silk the cutest
things, Hayden said. AnnaBelle
made matching sashes for the
flower girls.

ayden and Jeremy didnt

wait until the ceremony
to see each other on their
wedding day.
So many people had so many
opinions about that, she said.
But their officiant encouraged
them. My custom is to pray with
the bride and groom before the
ceremony begins, Rev. Heath,
said. My theology here is that
beginning with prayer far out-

weighs any superstitions people

feel about seeing each other
before the wedding.
So before the time of prayer,
they met in the State House gardens across the street from the
church for a first look.
Seeing him for the first time
was Haydens favorite part of the
day.
When Jeremy turned around
and saw Hayden, he said, tears
came to my eyes because I was so
amazed at how beautiful she
looked and how the day came
together. It almost kind of felt
surreal.

he day didnt go perfectly.

Hayden had planned for
the maid of honor to be

her childhood best friend, Suzie

Wilson. But Suzie was studying
abroad at Ross University School
of Veterinary Medicine in St.
Kitts, and the wedding was the
week of finals.
Suzie requested special permission to leave the country that week
even though she wouldnt miss
any exams and she was denied.
We didnt even think of a Plan
B, Hayden said. It had never
occurred to her that theyd be
denied. I cried about that a lot.
Suzie shipped champagne to
Hayden the weekend of the wedding, and her mom and sisters
attended.
The other snag in the day was
something Hayden had foreseen
almost.
She had spoken to the reception
venue, the Palmetto Club, about
the necessity of air conditioning.
(Im the most hot-natured person I
know. I sweat like a beast. I told
them I was gonna need the thermostat set at, like, 60.) But she hadnt
considered the church, and when
she and her bridal party arrived at
Trinity to get ready, the air was out.
But they were wonderful
about it, Hayden said, adding
that the church brought in fans
and two different companies to
fix the air conditioning.
The air was back on in time for
the ceremony.

27

t the Palmetto Club, guests had a

cocktail hour with champagne and
hors douvres while Hayden and
Jeremy took pictures with the bridal party.
Hayden chose Fern Design and Flower
Studio as her florist. I didnt know anything
about flowers except that I like tulips and
orchids, she said.
They didnt use many flowers at the
church, but at the reception, uncut French
tulips, bending outward elegantly from
large, fluted vases, were one of the main
focal points. Another focal point was
Parkland Cakes creation, a round cake
topped with orchids and set on a table
beneath one of the Clubs chandeliers.

Meagan used Haydens mothers veil as the

tablecloth for the cake table. Hayden had wanted to wear it, but the warmer white of the veil
clashed with the pure white of Haydens gown.
Meagan also suggested cutting the cake
early in the reception; after the bridal party
introductions, Hayden and Jeremys first
dance, the father-daughter dance and the
mother-son dance, they cut the cake.
Hayden said changing the traditional
order of the reception events made the day,
while very traditional, her own. And I think
people noticed the veil, she said.
Meagan was pragmatic: It got the cake
out of the way to make room for people to
dance, she said. It was a very big wedding

A FAMILY CONNECTION
Hayden had her bridal portraits
taken at the Governors Mansion
in a nod to her family history. Her
fathers father is Richard Riley,
who served as governor of South
Carolina from 1979 to 1987.
Her photographer, Jennifer
Stuart, included shots with her
grandparents portraits and in the
garden outside, a special project
of Haydens grandmother, the late
Ann Tunky Riley. Tunky made
over the gardens and started the garden club
during her husbands tenure as governor.
Haydens other grandmother, Sandra Owens,
remains active in the garden club.
It was so fun taking pictures and having my
mom reminisce, Hayden said. Her parents
lived in the Governors Mansion for a short
time as newlyweds in the early 1980s.
Jeremys parents hosted the rehearsal dinner at the Lace House, on the grounds of the
Governors Mansion, with Southern Way cater-

ing. By Jeremys request, the dinner was not what Hayden called a
stuffy, sit-down affair, but instead,
more of a party. They used a golf
theme for the dinner since the
wedding was the same weekend
as The Masters golf tournament.
Another connection through
Haydens grandparents resulted in
a special touch. Im not bragging,
she said. This is just so cool.
Her grandfather, who also served
as Secretary of Education under Bill Clinton, is
friends with the former president and served as
co-chairman of Hillary Clintons 2008 presidential campaign, so Hayden and Jeremy invited
them to the wedding. We didnt expect them to
come, of course, Hayden said.
The Clintons had a personal note to the
couple hand-delivered to her grandfathers
home in Greenville. The note, which Haydens
father had framed, now hangs in Hayden and
Jeremys living room.

with between 350 and 400 guests.

The Reggie Sullivan Band performed, and
Hayden and Jeremy made their exit through
rows of sparklers into an antique car.
Meagan had introduced Hayden to the
cars owner, Ann Lyons, who Hayden was
surprised to see was dressed in 1920s garb
to match the era of her Ford Model A.

Hayden said the wedding day was

A perfect blend
of personalities

shley Johnson and Ashby West met

through mutual friends. Both were
raised in the Lowcountry and had
known of each other, but never knew
each other.
We didnt go to the same high school and we
met through mutual friends, Ashley said. The
two were friends for about four and a half years
before taking another look at their relationship.
One day we kind of said to each other, I like you,
you like me, so we started dating, she said.
They were dating three years (a milestone
marked by the number of stones in her engagement ring) before he proposed in a way Ashley
lovingly describes as exciting and random.
We met for lunch and he wanted to take me to
The Sands. It was overcast and raining and I didnt
want to go, she recalled. Instead, the two went to
eat at a local sandwich shop and after lunch, Ashley
headed back to work and Ashby followed.
I thought I had forgotten something at the
restaurant and he was bringing it to me, she said.
And in a way, that was true.
Ashby parked right next to her and jumped out
of the car, grinning from ear to ear, and dropped
to one knee in the parking lot of her office.
He got straight to the point, she said with a laugh.
He had a piece of paper with everything he wanted to
say but all I remember him saying was you will make
me the luckiest man if youd be my wife. I guess the
ring was burning a hole in his pocket.

There were a few things the couple knew they

wanted when they started planning their wedding. A country girl at heart, Ashley wanted a
venue that had an indoor/outdoor element. They
also knew the ceremony would be held at the
Carteret Street United Methodist Church, which
Ashbys family had a hand in building. And Ashley
would wear cowboy boots.

Ashleys favorite brown and turquoise boots

served as inspiration for wedding colors and
they helped set the rustic country theme at the
Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, where Ashbys
parents are members.
I have to admit I wasnt 100 percent sold on the
idea of a yacht club wedding, said Ashley, who
admits shes never been into the whole nautical
theme. But Ashby loves the water and all types of
fishing. I was able to add in country elements to
make it a perfect blend of our personalities.

Beaufort photographer Susan DeLoach

captured the days special moments, including a
blazing orange and purple sunset that she said
seemed to be painted just for them.
The weather that day was supposed to be rainy,
but by mid-day the skies began to clear. That
evening we were gifted one of the most beautiful
sunsets I have ever seen. It was amazing to be able
to capture some of Ashley and Ashbys wedding
day against the magnificent canvas, Susan said.
At the reception, tables were decorated with
blue mason jar lanterns and oyster shells. The
couple kept things informal with unassigned
seating and a buffet from Dukes Bar-B-Que that
included pulled pork, barbecue chicken, mac and
cheese, green beans, coleslaw and hush puppies.
Guests filled their cups from a sweet tea bar and
carried oysterflage koozies, a nod to Ashbys
love of the ocean.
Dessert included wedding cake three-tiers
accented with pale mint flowers a carrot cake
grooms cake topped with the logo of Ashbys family farm, and chocolate and vanilla cupcakes.
At the end of the evening, guests gave the newlyweds a glowing exit with large sparklers and
the happy couple boarded a boat for a night ride
around the river.
It was so peaceful, just the two of us. It gave us
a chance to look back at the yacht club and all our
guests and to see the city at night, Ashley said.

Windows on the Waterway,
Hilton Head Island

The 2654 Project

{ Hilton Head Island Bluffton Beaufort South Carolina }

By Cate Fitzpatrick

Like many brides-to-be, Ashley pinned idea

after idea to her wedding Pinterest board but
it was her mother, a retired art teacher, who
was a wealth of inspiration and creativity.

My mom had so many good ideas. I think she

was more into planning than I was, she said.
Ashleys mom made the brides crystal hairpiece and styled the rustic Moroccan-themed
tablescapes, which included white lanterns,
antique books, gold bottles with sprigs of
babys breath, and hand-sewn mint and lace
table runners.
The couple chose Windows on the Waterway in Hilton Head Plantation for their
ceremony and reception, and enlisted the
expertise of wedding planner Tracey Mancini
of Celebrations Catering & Events.
I absolutely hate making decisions and the
planning process is all about decision making, Ashley said. It was so nice having her
help along the way.
The ceremony was held on the lawn facing
Skull Creek. Bridesmaids wore mint Alfred Sung
dresses in varying styles and groomsmen wore
gray suits with mint ties. The bride carried a
bouquet of roses, calla lilies, and babys breath.

Before walking down the aisle, Ashley and

Mark had a first look at Dolphin Head Beach,
where Ashley grew up playing on the playground.
It was the best decision all day, she said.
Seeing Mark took away all my anxiety. Having
that special moment together made me feel so
much better about the day.
Kristen and Mark Scott of The 2654 Project
captured the days beautiful moments.
They trusted our taste and decisions and gave
us the space to be creative. We do our best work
when brides and grooms trust us, and Ashley and
Marks wedding was no exception, Kristen said.
Although there were no pies to mark the Pi Day
wedding, as they called it, guests enjoyed a buffet
of shrimp and grits and barbecue, a candy bar,
and wedding cupcakes wrapped in lace paper
cups from Ronnies Bakery & Cakes by Lou.
But we did kiss at 9:26 p.m. for good luck, to
continue the magical number sequence, Ashley
said.

33

here was something in the air the night

Ashley Beltz and Mark Rose shared their
first kiss. Something electric.
It was an unusually warm February night in
Nashville. It was breezy and there were tornado
warnings and storms in the area. You could just
feel the electricity in the air, Ashley said.
For Mark, he knew then on their second
date that they had something special.
On the day Mark proposed, the two spent the
afternoon strolling down memory lane. They
visited the place where they first kissed, and
went to the park where thy had their third date to
reminisce about how far theyve come together.
I knew he had bought a ring, I just didnt
know he had it with him that day. It was an
unexpected surprise, Ashley said.

day: To show up and look pretty.
Those were the directions from our officiant and Stuart, she said, referring to former
Marriott catering manager Stuart Davis. So
immediately I was like, youre both hired.

Anna Prokop and Ryan Miller were living in

Maryland when they met online in 2011. Foodies
at heart, they had their first date at a seafood
gastropub and the conversation came easy.
Our first date probably lasted six hours.
We still joke that those website algorithms are
spot-on, Anna said with a laugh.
It wasnt long after, on a trip to Hilton Head
Island to meet Ryans parents for the first time,
that Anna knew he was the one.
He always pushes me to have fun. On that trip
we didnt plan anything and had such a great
time. I knew I needed him in my life, she said.
Three years later, while sitting on the beach on
Hilton Head and listening to a playlist specially
crafted by Ryan for the occasion, he proposed.
We were doing our favorite thing to do

walk back to their rooms. Not to mention the
Marriott promised the event would be a breeze.
While Im a planner, I also enjoy simplicity.
When I talked to Stuart, he said they would
take care of everything and all I would have
to do would be to show up, Anna said. And
honestly, thats really all I felt I needed to do.
The couple kept things sweet, simple, and focused on friends and family. Annas sister was her
matron of honor and Ryans uncle was best man.
In a quiet garden area near the resort pool,
photographer Laci Frazier captured the intimate
and sincere moments of the couples first look.
They had no problem being unapologetically themselves, and I think thats what I
loved most about capturing them, Laci said.
Ryans tears as he saw her for the first time
came easy, and Anna reaching to wipe them
off with earnest eyes followed almost on command. They are true partners.

Anna and Ryan knew right away Hilton Head

a seashell in her hair. She carried a cheerful
yellow and white bouquet of sunflowers, roses,
goldenrod, and baby daisies, wrapped with

A sit-down dinner followed on the same lawn
and included braised short ribs with horseradish cream sauce and chicken with lump crab
meat. Dessert was a starfish-accented tiered
wedding cake from Publix topped with two blue
Adirondack chairs Anna found on Etsy.
I was not the kind of bride who had been
planning her wedding for forever. I kind of let
it take shape. If I saw something and I liked it,
then I found a way to include it, she said.
From the moment DJs from Crush Entertainment started playing music, guests were
on the dance floor.
We both love music and we wanted songs
that were really important to us. We wanted
to have a good mix of old and new songs so
everyone could have a connection to the
music, Anna said.
The reception wrapped up around 10
p.m. and guests went back to their rooms,
changed into their bathing suits and jumped
in the pool. Its those moments that Anna
said shell remember forever.
At the end of the day, thats the kind of
stuff that matters. Years from now, youre
not going to remember the little details.
So why not let someone else make the day
beautiful and easy for you so you can enjoy
the big stuff? she said.

Plan the perfect rehearsal dinner

By Meggie Thompson
Special to Carolina Bride

ou have spent months planning your

dream wedding and now the time has
come to focus on the rehearsal dinner.
The mere thought of now having to
plan a party for that other party might seem
daunting, but it doesnt need to be.
The rehearsal dinner is essentially the
wedding pre-game. Think about it : every
great event begins with a pre-party. And what
does every great pre-party have? A welcoming
environment, great food, great people and great
conversation.
Whether you choose to host an intimate dinner for your family and wedding party or opt
for the increasingly popular welcome reception
that extends the invite to out-of-town guests and
friends, the rehearsal dinner is a time for you to
finally take a step back and relax. Its a chance
to spend quality time with those who love you
the most. A chance to enjoy a delicious meal,
followed by heartfelt toasts (and roasts). As the
lesser known saying goes, Eat, Drink and Be
Married Tomorrow.
Here are a few things to consider when planning the perfect rehearsal dinner menu.

WHAT NOT TO SERVE

Chances are you have already written, modified, tasted (several times) and finalized the
wedding reception menu. Its perfect. This is the
starting point for the rehearsal dinner. Whatever you are serving at the wedding is off the table
(no pun intended). You want to avoid duplicating
items as not to overshadow the wedding.

36

CHOOSE A MENU THEME

Rehearsal dinners tend to be more casual.

This is a great time for out-of-town guests to
get a taste of the area and enjoy local flavors.
When deciding on a menu theme, whether it be
heavy hors doeuvres or Lowcountry cuisine, it is
important to match the menu to the venue.

STYLE THE SERVICE

Decide how you would like your guests to

be served. The most common culinary service
styles include butlered (passed) hors doeuvres,
buffet, stationed, family style, and plated. When
choosing, keep in mind that the more elaborate
the service style, the higher the cost will be.

BRIDE AND GROOM FAVORITES

Incorporate your personality into the rehearsal

menu. Have fun with it. If you both love Baked Ziti
but are unsure of how to tie it into your summertime seafood menu, talk to your caterer. Chefs are
magicians. Youd be surprised how your favorite
dish can be transformed into a flavor-packed, bite
sized hors doeuvre. Who cares if it doesnt tie
into the menu exactly. Its your menu.

CONSIDER DIETARY RESTRICTIONS

Its difficult to know the allergies and dietary
restrictions of every single guest. However, its

important to provide guests with options. If you

know of any allergies, let your caterer know in
advance so they can make proper arrangements
so you and your guests can enjoy the meal with
peace of mind.
Planning the rehearsal dinner doesnt need to
be stressful. So take a deep breath and remember that the key to ensuring your guests have a
great evening, is for you to have one too.

An officiant for all

hen looking for a

wedding officiant,
many couples turn
to religious leaders.
But couples from different faith
traditions or couples who arent
religious have fewer options.
Many of my clients, by the
time they get to me, have been
told no by the church or a member of the clergy, said Kevin
Roberts, founder and principal at
Carolina Wedding Vow. ... I have
found the safe space and freedom
to meet my clients where they are
without having to mandate they
believe exactly what I believe or
practice faith the same way I do.
During his 16 years as a Baptist
parish minister, Roberts frequently saw couples begin attending
church during their engagements.
They would attend sporadically, participate in whatever ritual
we prescribed for membership,
and then after the wedding, they
would fade away,
Roberts
said.
That
always
seemed less than
authentic to me,
on the part of the
church, to say,
Roberts
Yes, we will support your marriage as long as you
sign here that you believe exactly
what we believe, and if you do, you
can use our lovely sanctuary, too.
The Pew Research Center
reported in November that the
religiously unaffiliated account
for 23 percent of the adult population in the U.S. up from 16 percent in 2007. But the researchers
add that the majority of
Americans without a religious
affiliation say they believe in God.
Roberts, who has been married for 26 years himself, has
seen those trends firsthand.
A typical Vow client has a deep
spirituality and desires their wedding ceremony have a sacred
nature and feel to it, he said. That
was true for Lauren McCullough.
A lot of people just havent
found their place yet, but they

still want a ceremony thats emotional and intimate ... without
having to be affiliated with anything, said Lauren, who married
her husband, David, in February
2014. She says they are very spiritual, though they dont have a
church they attend regularly.
Kevin is very good at getting to
know people and whats important to them and weaving that into
their ceremonies, said Susan
Yelverton. She and her wife, Jenn

Bull, were legally married in

Connecticut in 2010, but Roberts
presided over a marriage celebration with friends and family in
2011. Theres a group of people
who need that kind of love and
care, and he definitely provides it.
Roberts attention to detail in
the ceremony and his comfort at
the altar pay off, says videographer Bill Grant. As videographers, we look for great storytellers at a wedding, he said.

The great thing about working

with Kevin is that he understands how to tell a story and
how to make the bride and
grooms wedding feel personal.
Part of why Roberts is able to
make his weddings feel so personal
is that he encourages couples to
spend some time with him before
the wedding. Vow offers a service
Roberts calls marriage planning
which he recommends but
doesnt require to help couples
examine the emotional, physical,
spiritual and financial aspects to a
lifelong relationship.
A wedding lasts for one day,
he said, and marriage lasts all
the days after that. I encourage
my clients to plan accordingly.
At the McCulloughs wedding,
guests thought Roberts had
known the couple for ages
because of their time in wedding
planning. He still keeps up with
them, Lauren said.
Most of my clients do not have
a pastor when they walk into my
office, Roberts said. But they do
when they leave.

Proximity: Your guests should be able to
attend without excessive costs or travel time.
Locale: You want to marry and honeymoon
in a romantic setting.
Resort: An all-inclusive resort with meals,
drinks, activities and entertainment included
will be easiest on your budget and your guests.
The most popular wedding destinations for
U.S. couples are the Caribbean, Mexico and
Hawaii, in that order. Hawaii does not have any
all-inclusive resorts, but the beautiful islands
have much else to offer.
Creating a wedding at a beautiful resort is
easy. You have the assistance of a wedding plan-

ner to help choose such things as your theme
and colors, ceremony location (which could be
beachside or in a garden, gazebo or chapel), table
settings, menu, cake, flowers, and music. When
the big day comes, resort staffers handle all the
arrangements. You do not have to act as host and
hostess; you are free to simply enjoy your day.

A traditional wedding can be very expensive.

Many resorts include complimentary weddings
when you book the honeymoon, so all you pay
for is the honeymoon.
At an all-inclusive resort, most of your
expenses are fully paid and you need not worry
about budget, though you may want to add
some things like a private oceanside candlelight dinner, a couples massage, or an off-property tour.
The planning process and execution of a
destination wedding is simpler, easier and less
stressful than a traditional wedding.
A travel agent is your best resource for helping you select a wedding location and guiding
you through your decisions.
An agent who specializes in destination weddings and honeymoons will have a wealth of
information, advice and support to help you
every step of the way. Their fees are paid by the
vendors, so their help and expertise is free to
you. Sometimes, they can even get exclusive
offers and amenities.
On the wedding day, the resort staff makes
sure everything goes smoothly, letting you relax
and enjoy your day together.
