Section A: Introduction Section of a Research Report (5 marks)

Identify the appropriate elements of the Introduction section in a Technical Research Report.
1. Recently, some research has used radio frequency identification (RFID) technology for
indoor mobile robot localization as the information written in ID tags can be easily read
out by an RFID reader. ____________
2. The aim of this report is to investigate the possibility of using humanoid robots as
instructional tools for teaching a language in a primary school. ________________
3. In this report, we first present a survey on current instructional media for teaching a
second language. Then we propose five scenarios to realize the implementation of robots
in language courses. ___________________
4. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for indoor environmental obstacle recognition
and localization of a mobile robot by using an RFID system with a stereo camera as it is
inexpensive, flexible and easy to use in the practical environment. ___________
5. This paper introduces the architecture of the proposed method and some experimental
results. The reliability of the method is beyond the discussion of this paper.

FAST (Field-assisted sintering technology) has great potential in a wide range of
applications. Using FAST it is possible to engineer new materials and to design and
develop components with salient features that are not economically feasible using the
conventional manufacturing method.

and correct them (10 marks).
1 Traditional solar collectors will provide only one type of energy -- electricity
(photovoltaic type) or thermal energy (solar thermal type). These systems were
typically stand-alone systems or add-ons to a building. Eco-Terras buildingintegrated photovoltaic/thermal (BIPV/T) system will be designed to increase the
5 overall solar energy collected by both electrical and thermal energy. It had been
integrated into the building itself, forming the outer layer of the metal roof.
While the heat recovery system of the BIPV/T roof will be operating, air is
drawn through openings along the under-side of the roof surface by a variablespeed fan. This air is heated by the sun as it travelled under the metal roof layer
10 and is drawn from through an insulated duct into the basement mechanical room of
the house. The outer surface of the roof had been covered by amorphous silicon
photovoltaic (PV) panels that is converting the incident solar radiation into
electricity. Since the PV panels are about 60% efficient at converting the energy
into electricity, much of the remainder can be recovered by the air passing below
15 their surface.
The integrated nature of this system will mean that the surface on which the PV is
installed serves the dual purposes of being an energy collector for electricity and
heat. It also protected the house weather, as standard roofs do. This integrated
20

system saves on cost and allowed the modules to be virtually undetectable by the
houses neighbours.

Section C: Conclusions and Recommendations (10 marks)

Write one paragraph of a conclusion and recommendation section based on the following
information.

Research objective - to investigate the feasibility of using a battery-operated rice cooker

Research method a survey among back-packers and travellers
Findings - 80% of the respondents prefer to use the product; Reasons for their preference
convenient and easy to use; set-backs-the life time of the battery, takes longer time to
cook rice, the battery is heavy.
Should conduct laboratory experiment to test its reliability.

The microphone will receive sound waves and converts them into electrical
impulses that were sent to the videotape recorder through a cable. This cable
was being separated from the one that carries the picture image. With video
equipment, sound had been recorded on the videotape. At the same time, the
picture will be taping. This is known as synchronized sound.
Portable video cameras are including a build-in microphone and an external
microphone jack that functions as a separate microphone. The built-in
microphone is non-directional and can pick up extraneous sound from outside
the picture area. Therefore, it has been desirable to use a separate microphone
when possible.
Three microphone types will be commonly used in video production. A
lavalier microphone that is designed to be hung around a speakers neck or
clipped to clothing was unidirectional with a cardioids pattern. It is picking up
little sound other than the speakers voice. A fixed microphone, attached to a
stand that was placed on a table or suspended on a boom above the scene, is
non-directional. Its main function was to record remarks from a number of
persons grouped around it. A third type is being a unidirectional shotgun
microphone, which is positioned away from the scene and was aimed at the
speaker. It is highly directional and its main usage is in documentary-type
recordings that intend to capture sound in a natural, realistic way.
