Physics 130 - A

Dr. Schmidt
Midterm II

Write you name on the cover of the blue book. Put all your answers in the blue book. Start a new page for each
problem. Partial credit will be given for incomplete answers. At the conclusion of the exam fold this exam in half and
place in your blue book and turn in your blue book.
1. (15 points) Answer True or False to the following statements. If false change the statement to make it true.
a) In an inelastic collision, momentum is conserved but not mechanical energy.
b) Impulse is a vector quantity.
c) Momentum is conserved only if no external forces are acting on the bodies.
d) The center of mass of a body cannot lie outside the physical body.
e) In an elastic collision mechanical energy is conserved but momentum is not.
2. (15 points) A ball of mass m attached to one end of a string is whirled around in a horizontal circle of radius r. The
other end of the string passes through a vertical tube which acts as a frictionless bearing at the center of the circular
path of the mass. At the bottom and of the string is attached a second mass M which hangs free. When the radius of
the circular path is reduced to half of the initial radius: (Choose as many as apply.)
a) The tension in the string increases by a factor of two.
b) The speed of mass m increases by a factor of two.
c) The acceleration of mass m remains a constant.
d) The speed of mass m remains the same.
e) The rate of rotation increases by a factor of four.
3. (10 points) Define the normal force acting on an object at rest or in motion on a surface. Include the source of the
meaning "normal". Use this to tell which of the following cars A), B), or C), all moving at the same speed, would
have the smallest normal force. Note at the hill and valley of the road, the surface of the road approximates a segment
of a vertical circle.

C
B

4. (15 points) The first drop in the Goliath roller coaster is 27 m at an 80o incline. The coaster reaches a speed of 32
m/s. How small a vertical radius can the track at the bottom have to turn the coaster back in an upward direction
while not exposing the riders to more than 4 gs (four times the acceleration of gravity) of acceleration?
5.(15 points) A mass m1 of 5.0 kg lies on a 30o incline. A massless string is attached
to the end of the block and passes over a pulley at the top of the incline. A second
mass m2 = 10 kg is tied to the other end of the string and hangs down over the top
edge of the incline. What maximum coefficient of static friction between m1 and the
surface of the incline will keep the tension in the rope less than 55 N as the system
accelerates to the left and down?

m1
m2

6. (15 points) How large must the coefficient of static friction be between the tires and the road to allow a car moving
at 95 km/hr to turn in a circle of radius 120 m on a flat surface?
7. In the opening scene of the movie Golden Eye a 82 kg James Bond jumps off the Verzasca dam tied to a
bungee chord 75 m long unstretched. A bungee chord is just a long spring with a spring constant k. James is in free
fall until he reaches the end of the bungee chord at which time the elasticity of the chord slows him down and
momentarily stops him just before he reaches the surface of the water 120 m down from the top.
a) (9 points) What must the spring constant in the bungee chord be to keep James from getting dunked?
b) (6 points) What is Bonds acceleration, both magnitude and direction, at the lowest point?
