Making a lava lamp

(Starts with an opening montage)

Have you ever caught yourself being hypnotized by a lava lamp? You hold it in your hand,
move it slightly, and watch as the liquid quivers and separates into different shapes and
colors. Then you look at the price tag - and put it back. To do your wallet a favor, let us learn
how make a lava lamp with household ingredients.
B.

Tie to audience

People did ask me, why do you even need a lava lamp? Let me tell you something. Many
people use the lava lamp to increase the style of the house. This item is a good decor for the
people who want to bring vintage and retro feeling at home. This lamp is very popular in the
era of 1960s. People consider the lamp suit the groovy style in the year. The psychedelic
properties of the lava lamps make it unique and stylish. Until this present day, a lava lamp is
still used by people all over the world. Installing the lava lamp inside the bedroom is a good
choice because you can enjoy soothing feeling.
As for myself, I do place a home-made lava lamp on my study table. Try to imagine a situation
where you are sitting, doing assignment maybe at your study table, hours after hours. Surely,
your brain will be tired and worn out. What you need is a nip break, mere distraction from
your work, a sip of calmness to help you keep going. And of course, a therapeutic decoration
like lava lamp without doubt will help you tune yourself.

Credibility Material

The usual lava lamp sold in the shop are made of wax and chemicals that are quite poisonous
and need proper supervision during handling them. Plus, it is not nature friendly. Meanwhile,
this homemade lava lamp is totally safe and the materials such as bottle, food coloring and
fizzing tablets are very safe and easy to obtain.
To be honest, lava lamp is one of my most memorable toys back when I was still a kid and I
have never moved on. The excitement and fascination never fades every time I see the
floating colorful water in a bottle. And today, I want to share that sensation with all of you.
D. Thesis & Preview:
To make a lava lamp, first you must know what should be prepared. Then, you prepare your
first medium which is the water. Next, pour the oil. After that, comes the fizzing tablet in to
turn on the lamp. Lastly, the scientific explanation behind this project is revealed.
Transition: Lets not waste any time and I would be honoured if you can lend me your eyes
and ears.

Body

A. Main Point #1 Preparing Materials

1. Subpoint #1:
You will need a clear and transparent bottle and container so that you can see what is
happening inside. Nevermind if it is a plastic or glass as long as it is transparent and have
cap. But, I strongly suggest you find a tall one.
2.

Subpoint #2:
You would also need vegetable oil. A lot of them. The reason why vegetable oil is used is
because it is clearer than normal cooking oil. But in my case, it is not as clear as the one in
the youtube because the clear one is hard to find plus it is quite expensive. In addition,
used oil works too but you need to filter it a few times to get clean and pure oil.

3.

Subpoint #3:
Next material is water and food coloring. Water is used as the base while the oil works as
medium. Meanwhile, food coloring is used because it mix well with the water only, not the
oil. You can use any colour you like.

4.

Subpoint #4:
Lastly, Effervescent tablets or fizzing tablets which are designed to break in contact with
water. These tablets such as Panadol soluble, table salt or vitamin can easily be found at
pharmacy or grocery store.

Transition: Now that I have covered the materials needed, let's move to the making process.

B. Main Point #2 : Water as Base

1. Subpoint #1:
You would want to rinse the bottle first so that there is no left over juice or drinks in your
bottle and let it dry. Then, fill in the bottle with plain water about one quarter full.
2. Subpoint #2:
Add a few drops of food colouring into the plain water and watch it mix well. Remember, just a
few drops only. You dont want the water become too saturated. Dilute solution would be just
nice as in the real lava lamps.
3. Subpoint #3:
Have you ever heard of this idioms? All that glitters are not gold. Sometimes, it is really
glitters. (show glitters to audience as a surprise). When I made a lava lamp last time, I did
think on how to make this lava lamp even better, and this is just the answer.
Transition: Now that I covered the base, let us move to the medium which is the vegetable
oil.

Main Point #3 The Oil Medium

1. Subpoint #1:

Carefully, pour vegetable oil into the bottle until it is nearly full. Pour it gently because
you dont want any spilled oil on the table. You can use filter funnel if you want to.

2. Subpoint #2:
Then, we wait until the two liquids are fully separated. At this point, you cannot have

air bubbles between the water and oil because it might disturbs the dynamic
movement of water. So maybe we have to wait for about a minute until there is a
clear line separating the two solution.
Transition: Now the solution is perfectly set up, let us move on to the final step.

Main Point #4 The Show Begin

2. Subpoint #1:

Let me introduce you the heart of this lava lamp (while showing them fizzing tablet). A
fizzing tablet which is in my case, is a vitamin C. but, you cannot simply put it in. you
have to break it into half or quarter pieces first because you want to increase the
surface area which means, more lava.
2. Subpoint #2:

Now, I need all eyes on me. No need to worry because nothing will explode here. Just
sit back and ready to be amused.
(Put in the fizzing tablet)
Transition: I know how fascinating lava lamp can be but how does it work?

Main Point #5 Scientific Explanation

3. Subpoint #1:
There are two scientific explanation behind this project which are density and carbon
compression.
2. Subpoint #2:
Both oil and water are liquid yet why dont they mix together? The reason is because of the
difference in density. Water is always heavier than oil so it will sink to the bottom even if it rise
due to the effect of fizzing tablet. And never, it will merge together.

3. Subpoint #3:
In our homemade lava lamp we used fizzing tablets to power the lamp. The fizzing tablets
reacts with the water to produce carbon dioxide gas bubbles. These stick to the water
droplets. The water/gas combo is less dense than the oil, so they rise to the top of the flask.
At the top, the gas bubbles pop and escape into the air, allowing the dense water to sink back
to the bottom again.
Transition Now you have known how to make a lava lamp and how does it actually works.

III.

Conclusion

A. Brakelight
The clock sure ticks quite fast. I dont even realize that we are approaching the time out.

B. Summary
To sum things up, let us recall the steps in making a lava lamp. First, you have to prepare all
your materials and substance. Then, you have to prepare your first medium which is the
water. Next, pour the oil. After that, comes the fizzing tablet in to turn on the lamp. Lastly, the
scientific explanation behind this project is revealed.

C. Tie Back to Audience

Always remember that lava lamp does not get old and it always serve the best as a
decoration. Besides that, the water movement actually have therapeutic effect that makes it
an excellent item to help you relieve your stress by watching it.

D. Concluding Memorable Remarks

In a nutshell, now that you guys know how to do it, why not make one and you can have fun
with it. Anytime you like and be creative.
(While pulling out other lava lamps that had been prepared earlier and bring it up to life)
Enjoy the show, thank you for watching Art Attack. See you again and have a nice day.
