COURSE DESCRIPTION
First semester of a two-semester human anatomy and
physiology course conducted via distance learning studying
basic chemistry, cytology, histology, integumentary system,
skeletal system, muscular system, and the nervous system
and how each of these systems function in an online
environment..
COURSE GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic
concepts of anatomy and physiology. The student will be able to
explain anatomy and physiology subdivisions; define basic human
anatomical terms; use basic human anatomical terms
appropriately.
2. The student will demonstrate an understanding of how the
human body is organized. The student will be able to explain the
anatomical hierarchy chart; use the anatomical hierarchy chart;
discuss the common functional characteristics of living things;
define and give examples homeostasis; explain the homeostatic
feedback mechanisms.
3. The student will relate the basic concepts of chemistry to the
study of human
anatomy and physiology. The student will be able to define basic
chemical terms; describe the organization within an atom; explain
chemical bonding; describe the characteristics of water; discuss
pH and buffers; discuss the inorganic and organic molecules in
the body; explain enzyme activity; discuss energy use and
requirement in the body.
4. The student will describe cell organelles and their functions and
transport across cell membranes, mitosis, and protein synthesis.
The student will be able to identify cell components and their
functions; describe the structure of the cell membrane; explain
the passive and active transport processes; discuss ATP

production and utilization; describe the events of mitosis;

describe the events of protein synthesis.
5. The student will explain body tissues, membranes, gland types,
and wound healing. The student will be able to distinguish among
the four basic tissue types; identify and describe epithelium,
connective, muscle, and nervous tissues and give examples;
differentiate between mucous and serous membranes; explain the
processes involved in wound healing.
6. The student will describe the components of the integumentary
system and their functions.
7. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the skeletal
system structure, function, and components. The student will be
able to describe bone structure and development; differentiate
among bone types; explain bone structure functions; discuss
selected skeletal system homeostatic imbalances; identify

BlackBoard Assignments
There will be weekly assignments pertaining to the lecture topic
that will be due and submitted online on the week we start lecture
discussion of that topic. The assignments are highly
recommended for the success of the student. The student will
have the sole responsibility of knowing when the participation
assignments are due (course organizer/calendar and syllabus has
the due dates.) Extra credit will be given at the instructors
discretion in the form of online quizzes, assignments, and case
studies.
Communication Plan
We will communicate through Blackboard announcements, office
visits, TCCD email, Laboratory and my office telephone. This will
include important course announcements and any changes to
calendar/course organizer, upcoming due dates, and questions
about course materials.

I will check my emails daily.

On the weekends, please
communicate/interact with other students in course through
discussion boards regarding any questions you may have.
I will grade and post assignments feedback and tests within 24
hours after deadline/due date. I will grade and respond to
discussion board posts within 48 hours
Course Policies:
1. If there is an issue that should arise regarding Anatomy &
Physiology lecture or lab, please consult the instructor first.
Within the authority of the instructor, your issue should be
resolved. Please also consult your syllabus regarding the issue
at hand. If in the event, the issue cannot be resolved by your
instructor, you will either be advised to speak with the
department chair, or the instructor will speak with the
department chair regarding the issue. If and only in the event,
the issue is out of the scope of your instructor and the chair, we
will then advise you to speak with the math and science dean.
2. Exams/DiscussionBoards/Assignments: There will be no
makeup opportunities. All things to be submitted will be
available for a limited period of time before the deadline,
therefore once due date has passed, there will be no
opportunity to receive credit for missed work. If there is a
prescheduled deadline (syllabus/course organizer) that
deadline must be met. If you submit an assignment after the
deadline, you will receive a zero for the assignment. If the due
date has a specific time to be submitted, please be advised
that even seconds after the deadline is considered late.
3. There will be no makeup exams. If you are absent from an
exam, without giving prior to exam day notice to the instructor
and without a legitimate excuse (@ the discretion of the
instructor), you will receive a zero for that exam. If you are
absent from an exam, with a legitimate excuse (@ discretion of
the instructor), please see instructor during office hours.
Legitimate excuses include doctors note for you or your
children, and parents. Funerals, and TCC preapproved events.
In the event, you are absent for something other than the
aforementioned, please see the instructor, prior to exam
scheduled date.

4. Withdrawal: If a student is unable to complete a course in

which he/she is registered, it is the students responsibility to
withdraw from one or more courses at or prior to the
withdrawal date (08/9/2015) of a semester or term, students
must complete a withdrawal form in the Registrars office. Until
a student is officially withdrawn by the registrar, the student
remains on the class roll and may receive a grade of F for the
course. At the discretion of the instructor, based on online
participation attendance, request for withdrawal can be made.
Students are strongly encouraged to contact the
instructor prior to withdrawing from the course. After
discussion of their grade situation with the instructor,
the student will then be in a better position to make an
informed decision with regard to withdrawal.
5. Uploaded Material: Class notes (powerpoints), assignments,
case studies, grading rubrics, syllabus, SLC hours, will be
uploaded to blackboard and assessable for a limited period of
time.
6. In the event that we have technical issues, please notify me, I
will check BB to confirm its not a technical issue I created, then
I will advise you to contact the help desk. Majority issues are
compatibility software and personal computer use. Please
utilize your campus resources (SLC, Computer lab, etc). Please
dont wait until the deadline has passed to suggest/inform you
had technical issues, you will still receive a zero. So please
prepare before the due dates, and allow yourself enough time
to inform me, fix the problem prior to deadline.
7. Inclement Weather, in the event that we have bad weather
and TCC closes for any other reason. Please be aware that any
due scheduled assignments/tests will be rescheduled once TCC
reopens and classes resume. Please take note that these
situations are beyond our control and we must all work
together to reschedule and makeup any missed work. Always
look for announcements and emails with updates from me. No
need to contact the department office.

8. You may view your grades (Blackboard) periodically

throughout the semester. There is no need to ask me when
grades will be posted, I will quickly assess your performance
and post the results. I will correspond with you via your TCC
student email address only.
Please also note that TCC is a very diverse community. The
students are different, as well as the Instructors/Professors. So
how one course was conducted may be very different from the
setup of another course.
